Every beginner climber should have one!

An ATC belay device can of course be used at any level of climbing for a multitude of purposes like a double stranded rappel. I teach an introductory class to outdoor rock climbing and our participants are either typically beginner climbers or have had some experience climbing in the gym. We purposely use ATCs as the belay device for our class because with an ATC, instructors can see and correct immediately any issues a participant is having with their belaying technique before it becomes solidified as a bad habit. Whereas, if someone were to learn using a gri-gri, which auto locks when sudden stress is introduced into the system, flaws in their belaying technique can be masked by the hardware. The Verso has a great price point, is lightweight and delivers a mooth pay out of our ropes, which are 10.2mm in diameter, during belaying. We use both Petzl and Black Diamond ATCs. The Petzl Verso is similar to the BD ATC XP as they both have added groves (we call them gator grips) that aid in providing added friction for keeping the brake strand of rope in brake position. I find that the XP’s number grooves (3 vs. Verso’s 2) helps a bit better for gripping the rope, which reduces the strength you have to apply as a belayer in brake position; however, the Verso is more compact and lightweight. The Verso is 2oz and the XP is 2.2oz; the Verso also costs slightly less than the XP at REI. Between Petzl’s two options of ATCS, I highly recommend the Petzl Verso for beginners and the Petzl Reverso, an aperture-style self-braking device, for more experienced climbers, who require its added functions of an additional attachment point and ability for use for belaying up to two followers for multi-pitch climbing. You can of course spend more and get the Reverso, in anticipation that you’ll be using it’s added features in the future, but know that picking up a Verso will be a good investment as well it can also be used as a lightweight piece of gear for future belays and rappels.

Lightweight belay device, performs well

Great tube style belay that does what it’s designed to do. The teeth/grooves on the brake side are noticeable, particularly when rappelling. This feature should be beneficial to new climbers as it will likely provide added confidence and security.

Compact ATC that gets the job done

The Verso is a small and very lightweight weight ATC that gets the job done. I used 10.2 mm rope in it and it held up well despite it being near the higher end of what the device is capable of. I think this is a great ATC if you're using the smaller rope and want a lightweight device that will work with your single pitch projects.

A solid belay/rappel device

A great tube-style belay device with extra friction. Light, smooth, and works like it should. Great for both top-rope and lead belay. Used with a variety of rope diameters within the range, and it performed great with all.
