Perfect Alpine Worksack
Been a huge fan of the Alpha pack series, having used the Alpha FL 45 exclusively for the past 3 years. The new Alpha AR 35 fits perfectly in line with both the 30 and 45. Fit: I've packed this up to about 40 lbs so far and it still carries great. The lightweight material holds up well under heavy loads. Great adjustability including load lifter straps as well as extra waist cinchers really helps to dial in a superb fit. Holding Gear: The pack is a great shape that offers optimal diameter to height ratio. I can easily fit a double rack, 60m rope and alpine day kit. This would be a great pack for a 2-day alpine climb. Summary: This is my new go-to alpine climbing pack. The minimally sized brain holds just what I need it to. The removable back panel allows me to shed a few ounces if need be. I am really excited to have this in my arsenal for the upcoming spring and summer climbing season! Testing notes: I used this pack on a bike to ski mission recently and it performed brilliantly. My partner and I biked and skied over 80 miles with 12k vert all with the Alpha AR 35 on my back!
Good for Ski touring
I used this backpack for Haute Route this year. I recommend it for Skitours. It worked good for carrying skis securely and balanced.
Versatile pack for climbing
I've had this pack since the beginning of 2019 when it first came out and till this day the pack still feels brand new. It's also been through all four seasons of Minnesota and on several climbing trips. This pack is very versatile and I've have used it for ice climbing, alpine rock climbing, multi-pitch rock climbing, backpacking and mountaineering summit pack. One of my favorite features are the accessible gear loops on the waist strap. When you run out of space on your harness that having extra gear loops on the pack are a savior.
Initial thoughts - great!
Great bag that seems to have sorted out the short comings (for my uses) of the Alpha FL. Lash points for anything you could possibly want, still lightweight and very water resistant. Will have to see if it's as durable, but that's for a later review. Not 100% sure about the new androgynous loop system yet but to it's credit it is a fairly painless transition - no fumbling once you get used to it - time will tell if they're more durable than a regular buckle, but like the bag itself and my other Arcteryx kit I suspect it will last a fair while. Currently my go to bag for anything that involves movement outdoors and I need to carry more than just hydration.
Fantastic pack, few corners cut
I really love the design and functionality of this bag! Great size for trad cragging or hauling your stuff on a long approach. The draw cord material is not very durable. After only a few month it’s fraying in the middle, I’m sure it’ll be easy to replace when it finally breaks but I would like to see better quality materials used for such a heavy use area on the pack. Other than that fantastic and super comfortable pack! I definitely recommend it!
Tough and Versatile
As expected, this pack is durable and super-capable, with a few minor drawbacks or things to be aware of. I loaded this thing up for desert towers and a cragging day at Indian Creek. For towers, it is nearly perfect, allowing you to comfortably carry rack/rope, snacks, helmet, and layers. I had no issues fitting my harness and even a book in. That being said, it is definitely a bit small for a full day out at the creek if you are carrying double and triple sets of cams. One thing that I found strange is that the pack tapers towards the bottom, requiring some deliberate packing. Durability-wise, I am impressed. I scraped this pack up scrambles and chimneys on some rough approaches, dropped it off a cliff (oops), and got sand, water, and blood on it. All this, and it shows nary a sign of wear. I look forward to testing it out in the alpine.
Full featured climbing pack
Stand out features of this pack are the ability to adjust it to whatever adventure you have in mind. With expanding collar, adjustable brain, shock cord and side release compression straps you can load up the kitchen sink! But remove the brain, the framesheet and cinch it down for light and fast trips. The internal pocket is out of the way for stuffing the pack with gear and the flat bottom helps it from falling over while taking brake, setting up camp or unloading gear at the crag. The straps and ice axe keepers use some new Arc'teryx system that takes a bit of practice but is nice once ya get it. All features are easy to adjust wearing a bulky gloves. So far I can't say anything about the durability other than the fabric shows dirt quickly, its bright orange though... I think this pack is a great all round pack with a focus on climbing\mountaineering but could easily be an awesome backpacking or ski mountaineering pack.
Your Climbing Partner in Crime
I’ve had this bag for quite awhile now and it’s been magnificent for what it was designed to do, getting your stuff to the wall. It’s lightweight but sturdy enough to carry everything from your rope, shoes, gear, food, and water without any discomfort. Heck, you can even throw your friend’s gear in there and it’ll carry it too. I have not had any issues with the materials ripping or coming apart, specially after being hauled and dragged up the wall. In terms of features, I do appreciate all the compression straps that it comes with, the brain cover, the gear loops on the hip belt, and the rope strap at the top of the pack. The one thing that I had trouble adjusting to was the new system of “buckles” that close off the brain cover. It definitely took a couple uses to get used to, but once you get used it, it’s second nature strapping in and out. Overall, it’s my go to bag for climbing, and I don’t see myself replacing it until it starts to come undone.
Perforated after 2 days
I had very high expectations of this bag. Cutting edge fabric technology as well as a very good bag layout should have made this my go-to do it all bag. Disappointingly, after only 2 days of use, I already have a perforation in my bag. First day was cragging in Squam. Not a hard use case at all. Second day was a scramble near Whistler; the perfect use case for this bag. I'm disappointed about the durability from this hyped LCP fabric technology to say the least. Looks like the rip was stopped at the rip-stop lattice, but it hurts me to put Tenacious Tape on a 2-week old bag.
great deal for the price
I am admittedly a pack nerd and did a lot of researching before buying this one. Over all I can't recommend this as a climbing pack. The number one reason is the rope catch is too short to hold a rope when the pack is even close to full. The buckles require two hands to connect or undo. It's a shame as the price point is reasonable, the pack carries well and has features I was looking for. I will say the size feels like an actual 35L pack. I had the Nozone pack and wish I had kept it. The Alpha FL series has a few good features but the ice tool carrying system leaves much to be desired. I know Arc'teryx prides itself on design originating in the field but this buckle system just doesn't seem like it was used by folks
