Universal Footprint 2 Quick Fix
I also was disappointed after purchasing the Universal footprint 2 for my new Hubba Bubba NX 2 to learn that it needed a modification to be used for the fast and light setup with the rainfly without the tent. All I did was tie a single overhand knot in each of the four loops at the corners of the footprint. Tie the knot tight as close to the gray strap as you can get it, making the new little loop smaller than than the pole end. Now wiggle the pole end into the new little loop which will open the loop enough for the pole end and further tighten the knot. The pole end should slip into the loop, but not the larger diameter section of the pole. Repeat at each corner.
Problem Solved. Be resilient.
As many of you outdoors folks know, sometimes being resilient is all it takes to make a piece of gear work as you intended. As with the new Hubba Hubba footprint, just add a figure eight knot on a bite. Leave a small loop to fit over the end of the poles on the cord that steaks out the footprint. Works really good. I'm sure someone can modify it even better!
No grommet, no problem
It's unfortunate that MSR removed the grommets from this version but there is an easy fix to this. As mentioned by others, all you have to do is tie a little knot forming a small loop near the strap. This allows you to do the fast & light pitch.
Problem Solved
On my way fishing i got an idea. 4 pieces from the tackle box. Problem Solved. Works perfect.
No real footprint - Generic Suck
MSR really missed the boat here, 1st - adding a pocket onto footprint to store the footprint, that is added weight, I cut mine off. I have always stored my footprint folded dirty end inside and then rolled with tent. 2nd, this leaving out the grommets and using string, garbage. I loved the old footprints and going fly with footprint was so easy, everything clicked right into the grommets and bingo bango all done. Get rid of the generic footprints and bring back the old design, using grommets and no sewn in storage pocket. I have searched to the ends of the internet looking for the holy grail, the Nubba Hubba 2 person original footprint. No such luck.
Not sure what made them remove the rivers... Here's a fix
Works perfectly with my Hubba Hubba NX 2, but only after I took another reviewers idea to add split rings to the four corners. I ended up using stainless steel 8mm lock washers from the local hardware store - perfect fit. Simply use two pairs of pliers to slightly open it up, thread it onto the footprint's grey tie down, then use the pliers to twist them back to flush. The other reviewer mentioned using split rings from the fishing store but didn't list the size.... The ones I had on hand were too big and too small.
Solution for missing grommet problem
I have a fix for the problem of the missing grommet. It's super easy. Just tie a knot at the beginning of the string from where it comes out of the nylon loop which is attached to the groundsheet. This will create a tiny hole in the string exact at the same spot where the grommet should be. Your tent frame should fit tight in that hole, and now you can set up a rain shelter without pegging the footprint to the ground. Good luck!
No grommets on new universal model
Lightweight and strong, but be aware this universal footprint (unlike the older MSR footprints made for specific models) does not have grommets for tent poles. This makes it harder to set up rain-fly only configuration, or to set up rain-fly first when raining (which is why I bought it).
Bring back the proper hubba hubba footprint
I bought a Mutha Hubba with footprint a few years ago and it's an awesome tent. I then bought my Hubba Hubba and sadly, MSR made the terrible decision to move away from a properly fitted footprint to this universal one. I guess universal means it doesn't fit any tent well. The absence of the pole rings means the foot print slides around which is especially terrible on snow. Plus, it's now impossible to use this tent as a lightweight shelter without the inner tent. I've been trying to source a used proper footprint but people hold onto them for dear life (which I fully understand)
MSR trying to save money
Msr is a high quality brand that puts out the best with their gear. Then they make a footprint that they can mass produce for all of their two person tents so they do not need as much inventory. As everyone has said, this takes out the grommets and limits your ability to set up the rainfly without the tent or the opposite. It's sad to see MSR do this to their customers. The customer shouldn't have to modify their footprint because MSR decided to cut corners. After buying the new hubba hubba, I may have to return it for this reason. It's sad because the tent is so well engineered.
