Excellent daypack
I alternate bags for each assignment since I travel often. I use this as an EDC bag in areas where I do not want obvious “military” appearance and can alternate between hip and sling carry. The storage is great. The inside zipper pocket will hold my “essentials”. Main compartment will hold a 32 oz bottle easily along with a small first aid kit and small rain jacket (Patagonia Houdini), light gloves and hat. The outside pocket holds my sunglasses, pen, multi tool, notebook and pen, passport, compass, whistle and small flashlight. Extra loops with carabiners is a great touch and use. The padded back is great, not hot and the fabric all around is durable. Great cinching for great movement. Awesome zippers and bag repels water nicely. I plan to buy backups. My only request is that the belt straps were equipped with something to secure them to the overage when pulled tight. Awesome bag. 10/10.
Really nice and large
I love my Hip Monkey. I use it primarily for fly fishing. It easily holds several fly boxes, an extra reel, tippet holder, a leader wallet, a lifestraw (for drinking water), a 9" (overall) fixed blade knife, a folding pocket knife and anything else you might want to take along for the day. It still has room left over. Not to mention (in this case) an empty front pocket. I also take this backpacking and will use it for side trips from basecamp. leaving all my heavy/unwanted gear back at basecamp. I take a first aid kit, a pancho, snacks, camera or whatever, the Hip Monkey is a perfect companion for any side trip from camp or day hikes. It has also made itself useful as a pillow on those nice summer days lazy in the shade during a break. It can also work fairly well as a sling. Which I have used when fishing. I have used the heck out of this hip pack for two years now and it shows virtually no signs of wear. I will continue to enjoy beating the beans out of it for many more years to come. I'm really stoked on this thing!
Great bag but the coating inside Flaked off
I been using the Hip Monkey as my daily EDC and has been great. But the interior coating and started to come off and my bag is not rendered useless. If I place my contents inside - it becomes covered in white flakes /dusts from the coating. Shame as the bag itself on the exterior is still 100% solid.
Highly ergonomic daypack for EDC essentials
The solid construction of the Hip Monkey allows me to hang off a safety helmet and two water bottles off the external loops and compression straps, all while fitting in a lunch in the roomy main compartment (at times I had a third water bottle to mix my powder-based meals, which the waist pack was also able to fit). Then there is a zipper-pouch on the inner side of the pack, where I can keep a notebook, pen, earbuds, and other things I don't want getting moved around the main compartment. I have an 18L sling back that this waist pack rivals in effective storage space and ergonomics. It feels satisfying have this thing full and taking a walk with it, as it feels part of the body. Very highly recommended.
Would get 5 stars if not for the belt
I use this for short day hikes and in the field at work. It's roomy, comfortable(even heavily loaded) and is made to typical MR standards. The hip belt loosens easily, though, due to the lack of retainers on the ends. That's my only complaint that purchasing cheap seat belt retainers fixed. This pack should come with something similar. This is my 3rd MR pack to supplement my newish 2 day assault and my backpack(can't remember the name) that I bought around 2004 that has been with me on the AT, Benton MacKaye and several other trails for probably 3k miles. Mystery Ranch has never really been about ultra light but they make durable, long lasting packs with great harness systems.
Great hip pack, can cross-sling, too
Had a trip coming up so took a look when Mystery Ranch's email advertised the Hip Monkey, and the sample shown was in the old British DPM, a favorite. Turns out that color was already out of stock but put in an alert; a few weeks later I got the "in stock" so jumped. I have used it as a cross-sling pack during my daily PT, an essentials pack in the pax seat on a cross-country drive, and as a waist pack walking around my alma mater (USAFA) at 7280' for a reunion, a bottle of water they 'issued' everyone on top of everything I thought I needed for several hours away from the car. There is plenty of room in the main compartment for a rain jacket or thin fleece pullover depending on their bulk; it's size is approximately 2/3 that of an old-school M1956 butt pack. I carried my ever-present notebook (two, actually), ibuprofen, allergy meds, sunglasses, and a few small items. The outer zip pocket has room to carry those small items you need frequently. The inner zip pocket covers the back wall, however it doesn't expand so best suited for thin things like passports, folded documents, or a spiral notebook and pen, etc. The waist strap and connecting panels are wide enough to keep the pack from pitching up or down. I would like to see either elastic loops or hook-and-loop straps added to secure the loose ends after tightening the belt and will fashion some of my own after this "field test." Worth the (short) wait, and well worth the price. As the British would say it's "good kit."
8 litres optimal volume for minimalist fly fishing
Better than the average sling pack for fishing gear, owing to its numerous pockets& superior ergonomics. Unlike most sling packs, when I slide the bag from my back to front, I can gain access to pockets containing tippet spools, fly boxes & similarly small-sized paraphernalia without "losing"contents to a cavernous sack. Also, there is less risk of dropping items into a river. One needs to have plenty of shirt & wader pockets to complement this well-constructed large hip pack. Admittedly, the 8L volume is a compromise, but seems to be a good tradeoff. I could even hide bear spray in the main pouch if not forced to carry it like a six shooter. With minimum compromise,I could pack ammo &a pistol, too!
Got that woodland drab, excellent!
You can stick two nalgenes in this pouch, or one bottle and a pistol, friggin huge. Also, the support panel is absolutely what makes the hip monkey what it is… the best. A whole family of chipmunks could live in the pouch. Used it for every adventure on a week long boondock out in Bryce Canyon area. I left my day pack at home and was able to take my rain shell, a nalgene, radio, phone, headlamp… it’s just so much room. With a pack on, I wore it at 3 o clock, and med pouch on belt at 6, with a pistol chest rig. Never became cumbersome. I will buy another for gifting. Awesome product. Glad I made the commitment.
Spacious but not bulky
I bought this with the intent for multiple uses, but thus far I’ve only used it for fishing. For that purpose it works very well, it’ll hold 4+ fly boxes along with all the other necessities. Loaded down it’s still comfortable and easy to get to the smaller pockets. One critique I have is with the waist belt and buckle system. I hate having straps hanging around everywhere and the width of the waist strap makes this even more annoying. This product would be on the next level if mystery ranch included some simple elastic strap keepers with the product. I went out and procured my own to take care of it.
Almost Perfect
Arrived last month and took it on an Overland trip. Enough space for a pistol, 500ml Nalgene, compact survival kit, compact first aid kit, tactical wallet and iPhone. Still space left over! Only reason not 5 stars is no longer made in USA, although I don’t have any complaints with quality... Second is there are no strap keepers for the loose waist belt ends so made due with some extras keepers kicking around although they’re really to small for this wide belt. For the trip, it hung behind my headrest, so can’t attest to comfort yet. Have a trip to Canada coming up and will test ability to ditch pack (MR ASAP). I’m biased, owning several MR pieces, but there’s a reason for that...!
