The perfect tool for ice climbing

The latest version of the Nomic is much more refined than my last set even though they look very similar. The most notable difference is how much nicer they are to swing. With the new Pur Ice pick, less weight in the handle and more in the head they drive even better than before. The grip is easier to wrap your hands around too, so hanging off them is easier and more comfortable. The weight is identical to the last but including the new micro hammer makes the tool feel incredible balanced. Some other refinements like bonded rubber instead of grip tape in the match area and clipper holes on the spike these are now the perfect tool for ice climbing.

Technically capable, lightweight

I’ve used the latest generation of Nomics for two years. They are an excellent all-around tool for waterfalls and dry tooling, sufficiently curved for enhanced grip but not so much that swinging is difficult. With the included weights, the center of mass is near the head, which some people find helps climbing brittle ice. The stock Pur’Ice picks are nicely tapered for easier penetration of the ice. I had trouble cleaning them initially, but with more experience I’ve overdriven them less, for easier retrieval. The Nomics are similar or slightly lighter than comparable ice tools - enough mass for strong swings, but not too much. For me, the drawback of these tools is the pommel construction. It’s fiber-reinforced plastic with two embedded aluminum/stainless steel components: the teeth connecting to the shaft and the spike. I had a pommel shatter while walking up moderate ice using the spike. Try gripping the shaft with no pommel! It’s not easy. Consequently, it’s hard to see the spikes as more than glorified umbilical attachments, and I’ll consider replacing them proactively every year or two. While it may be a function of getting a stuck tool in brittle ice, I also snapped a Pur’Ice pick in half recently. Keep in mind that these are thin, performance ice picks - and you can’t always “see” when a fatigue-cycled pick (jerked up and down forever in the ice) is near failure.

A good set of axes but not perfect.

Great axe but not the best for me. My other set of axes are the Quarks. This axe is best for steep ice. Pros: Well balanced and great swing weight. Picks are easy to change out. Cons: Tie in point to the handle is not that great. Really poorly designed compared to other axes that are similar. The hand rest on the lower handle seems a bit flimsy if you ask me. I climb Ice about 1-2 times a week. WI grade 3-5 mostly

Nomics make ice climbing more fun

I wish I could give this tool 10 stars. Favorite piece of outdoor equipment that I own, full stop. Ice can be a little scary sometimes, but having the Nomic inspires such confidence that I never question, or even think about, the tool's performance. It is fascinating to watch new climbers try multiple tools at ice festivals, they all seem to gravitate to the Nomic. The Nomic makes ice climbing more fun for beginners and experts alike.

Best tool for steep ice

This is the most comfortable ice tool i've used for steep ice, not so much lower angle grades. The pick weights need to be retightened once in a while as they will slowly come loose over time.
