Go-to Airbag Backpack
The Float 32 is the airbag that sets the standard. Everything about it is dialed in to be the perfect airbag backpack for a day of skiing avalanche terrain. It is a good compromise of size - not too small but also not a hulking backpack that does not ski well. The pack is big enough to have a full ski touring/mountaineering kit for the day, including glacier gear. It is light, especially with the new Float 2.0 system, but not so light as to sacrifice durability (allow backpack material prematurely tear) or safety. It has a separate avalanche tool pocket, allowing for easy access to essential tools - probe, shovel, saw. There is a good diagonal ski carrying system and also an accessory to carry snowboards. There is a helmet carry system. Goggle pocket. Easy to use leg loop. But most importantly the airbag system: compressed air is tried and true, easily refillable, simple, light, reliable. Compressed air is still a lighter system than the battery powered airbags. And while the new electric fan bags have had battery issues, the Float backpacks can be trusted to perform when they are needed - which is really the thing that matters most from an airbag.
Perfect size
This pack is the perfect size for a full day backcountry mission. Fit everything on the inside so that you don't have skins or jackets flopping around while you descend. The adjustable waist band makes it so that this pack can comfortably fit my small frame (I am a 5'5 female).
