Mountain House and Backpacker’s Pantry dehydrated

I love the Mountain House and Backpacker’s Pantry brands that REI sells (I do not like Alpine Aire). It’s my opinion that Mountain House is the best tasting dehydrated food product. Backpacker’s Pantry is only a hair below Mountain House in taste, but provides [often] substantially more calories. I do wish that the Mountain House Sweet & Sour Pork was more readily available. I hiked the entire AT in 2020 and it was only available in a couple of places.

Solid, tasty, and filling option for backpacking

Dehydrated food has come a long way, and the pad thai was surprisingly tasty. The brew-in-pouch rehydration method made for easy clean-up because I could eat it out of the bag. The package isn't very insulated, so in colder weather, the packet might need its own down blanket. A noodle had pierced through the packaging, but I was able to use duct tape to cover the hole and had no issues with boiling water leakage. The chicken texture was more like that of tofu, but it still tasted good. It's not quite 2 servings, more like 1.5, or even only 1 after a long hike. This is a solid and tasty meal option for the backcountry.

Great for camping/backpacking!

Backpackers Pad Thai was really easy to prepare and great for a warm dinner wile enjoying the outdoors! I’m not going to say it’s as good as fresh Pad Thai from a restaurant, but nor would I expect it to be. For what the food is intended to be, it’s delicious! It’s easy to prepare, and it’s a good portion size! Big enough to share with a friend if you don’t need a ton of food, but also not too big if you enjoyed a long day outside and need a big dinner! It’s packed with protein for good recovery! Just make sure you stir in all the spices at the bottom (or you might be missing out on some flavor!) I’d absolutely recommend this product!

Pad Thai with Chicken while backpacking?!!

OK....remembering the meals we use to have while backpacking 40-50 years ago and to think that I'd be able to have such a flavorful and spicy meal with minimal effort....crazy!! Easy to prepare (boil water), easy to clean up (put package in our trash bag & rinse out bowls but could have easily eaten out of package) and tasty with a little kick (there is definitely some spice) which I love! The sriracha is integrated within the dried meal, can't take out. You could easily add whatever you'd like, more peanuts, veggies, etc. I'm strongly considering using this on my next bike touring trip as a back up to keep on hand. Great option for on the road or trail!!

Surprisingly Flavorful and filling!

I tried this Backpacker's meal for the first time and I was surprised at how flavorful this meal was and how filling it was. It definitely contained more than 2 servings I would say. I shared this with my partner and had enough to share with friends. The taste was definitely Pad Thai flavored and it had more of a spicy kick than I would have thought. It was like a level 3 out of 5 spice level (which is why I had to bring down one star because it got too spicy for me after a few bites and I feel like I was not warned). I really appreciated the separate peanuts which added great texture and made it more authentic feeling. Overall, it was a really quick and light backpacker's meal that is perfect for camping and backpacking - really light and really easy to make - just add hot water!

Great for eating at home

Prepping for a backpacking trip and coming up with a menu for the week long trek. I was not particularly hungry when I sampled this product; when starving anything is good. I was really impressed with how good this was. Coming from a family that owns two Thai restaurants I think this says something. I will definitely be taking this on the trip

Tasted good, but need to simplify packaging

Overall this tasted good, real good actually. Everyone in my camp smelled pad Thai from the distance and was jealous. One recommendation to the manufacturer is to simplify the packaging. It had like 5 different plastic bags inside which I had to discard, or rather carry with me for the rest of the backpacking trip. And frankly, by now we all know what how long it takes for plastic to degrade, so why add more plastic. We also know where this plastic will end up. I'm willing to pay extra if it'd come with biodegradable plastic bags or even plain paper bags inside

Pad Thai on the Trail!

Surprisingly authentic taste for a freeze dried Pad Thai. Great flavor with a good amount of spice, the lime taste is a little strong though. Followed the directions and it's the perfect amount of water, making the sauce thick and creamy, not watery at all. The included peanuts are a nice touch, adding some texture and crunch. My only complaint, and it's really just a minor inconvenience, is the 2 extra pouches for the peanuts and the peanut butter. But, that's also part of what makes this one work. I have actually had some Pad Thai from restaurants that wasn't this good.

If you like burning mouth and lips…..

Backpackers Pantry made changes to their Pad Thai with chicken. The lime and sriracha packets are no longer separate. This means you CANNOT add the spice to your liking. Lime and sriracha are already mixed in. As I do not like to eat a meal where my mouth and lips burn, this Pad Thai is longer of any use to me. I notice, the information provided by REI does not reflect these changes. My husband who enjoys a 3 star Pad Thai was unable to eat this either. This used to be one of my favorite outdoor meals. No longer. It's now just like any of the other Pad Thai options available.
