Good Initial Impression

These seem to be a new model from KEEN this year so there aren't many reviews online yet. Initial impressions are good though. Not super cold or much snow yet, but after wearing them for a couple miles they're exactly what I was hoping for to handle MN winter commuting via the bus. I have a fair amount of walking to do to get to and from the bus and so far I'm impressed with these. They're light weight, relatively flat (not a huge heel drop), decently wide toe box, and pretty flexible. All things I struggled to find with the competition. As others have noted, they do run a little small, so I went up a half size. Two thumbs up so far … hopefully they hold up well and are warm enough when winter really hits.

Cold toes

The good: The boots are light and comfortable (though I would size up at least a full size, rather than the half size I add with other Keen shoes and boots.) The sole is deeply lugged and has pretty good traction in snow (not so much on ice, but that's true of everything except Vibram's Arctic Grip sole with the blue flecks, and maybe other specialized sole compounds.) And so far the waterproof membrane is holding up. The bad: There is very little insulation in the very tip of the toe, where the top seam in the insulated lining comes down to meet the rubber toe. In around 20 degree weather, tromping around in snow, my toes became cold and stayed cold until I got indoors and could take them off. I could feel the cold spot when I put my hand in the boots. Given that the toe should have the MOST insulation, I wouldn't get these for serious cold weather. Note that you should size up more than you usually would for Keens. I normally size Keens up 1/2 size. I did that with these boots, and they fit fine with medium weight boots, but they are tight with heavier socks. If I were going to buy them again (I'm not), I'd get a full size up.

Wicked Comfortable, Warm and Waterproof (for now)

Keen was on sale and I needed a pair of winter hiking/cold day boots. These shoes have some insulation and a fuzzy insole. Shoes are great in cold weather, if the weather drops below 35F I will wear warm socks and heavyweight if below 15F. My feet have never been cold except in the toe box when around 10F. Shoes are insanely comfortable and the leather has molded around my foot shape. Sole is cushioning and has grip on wet ground, safety! I have wider feet for women's shoes and generally wear a 9 mens. The 9 felt snug at first, so I decided to order a 9 AND 9.5 and here are my '2 cents' - the 9.5 felt comfy in the shoe box but was too long. The 9 felt snug in width good in length, HOWEVER, after more use, they stretched to fit perfectly!! Go with a 9 if your feet are like mine. Minus one star because the leather has worn out immediately and after a few days they look like worn, old boots that don't clean after washing (got the black). Also, I find the sole has some gaps in some areas but still seem to be glued on. They are waterproof, I can attest to that....for now. Happy with the price paid on sale.

Keen, my "go-to" boot brand

I've owned many pairs of Keens, from sandals to winter boots, and they are the only brand I'm willing to buy without trying on, as they always run true to size. These are no exception. I took these up for a five mile snowshoe the day after I bought them, and they were exactly what I look for in a light(ish) hiking boot. My feet were comfortable, warm and dry for the whole trip. Traction on compact snow was good, and not too bad on ice, either. I don't know if I would want to use these for longer backpacks though. They have a supportive footbed, but without adding in some kind of aftermarket insole, I really need a stiffer boot if I'm going to carry more than a day pack.

Light, Comftorable, and warm

I bought these boots for my winter backpacking trips. The first time i took them out i went in -20 degree weather with a pair of smartwool socks, My feet were pretty warm at first but after my 2 hour hike my feet were starting to ice over. I just finished a 4 hour hike in 18 degree weather with a pair of possum down socks and my feet were like furnaces the whole entire hike. I am super impressed with these boots. Straight out of the box they are incredibly comfortable and need 0 breaking in. I was also super surprised at how light these boots are.

Very Warm Boots

These are very warm boots. I hiked to the top of Kilimanjaro and winters in Minnesota with these and just regular socks. I left them behind for the porters in Kilimanjaro. I love the boots but a tad too warm for me.

Great boot

Very comfortable with good support yet feels like a high trail runner compared to my other winter boot. As others have said; roomy toe box yet not a wide boot. Breathed pretty well much less condensation than my other boots. Don't believe the minus 25 degrees, that's crazy. Zero at best if you are moving. Great in between boot, between non-insulated and heavy insulation for really cold. I found the fit to be normal, I'm usually either an 11 1/2 in some boots like Vasques, 12's in Salomons and keens and 12 fit fine.

Excellent choice for winter activities.

I got this boot for my winter hikes. It has been great. It has kept my foot warm and dry. They have decent traction on some snow and ice. However, I had found it best to pair them with some microspikes for easy to moderate hikes. For hard and a bit technical hikes I had paired them with stalker universal crampons. They are made by C.A.M.P. and they fit and work out well. But don’t use it for real technical climbs; the boot sole is soft as well as the crampon linking bar. For very technical climbs use proper montanireen boots. These boots have also worked well while snowshoeing. Overall it has been a great boot for winter hikes. I live in southern California so it is a boot that i can only use a month or 2 out of the year. But I'm completely satisfied.

Not durable/ comfy though

Both my outsoles on both boots started coming off after a year of occasional use. I’ve shoe goo’d them along for occasional use just because I had invested my money in them.first pair of keens and I’m Disappointed in the longevity. You can see the tread is still great, it’s the outsole stitching that tore. 5 stars for comfort, 1 star for durability. Don’t get these for hard use.

Mixed Bag (reviewed after 470 miles)

I generally only review boots after they have 1,000 miles on them but these boots are not what I thought they would be and I am not sure they will make it to that far. In November I decided that I needed a nice pair of boots for snowshoeing and winter hiking. My initial shopping pointed me to a pair of Oboz but I researched further and found an article stating that these boots had been tested and deemed best all-around boot for winter hiking. The specs state that they are comfortable down to -25 degrees. Being that I am a fan of the brand I decided to give these a shot. Here is what I liked about these boots: Tough laces and lacing system Toe box is appropriately roomy Large toe bumper Lugs shed mud nicely Aesthetically pleasing (subjective) Great ankle support Brass gator loop saves your laces Here is what I did not like: Temperature rating is gratuitous at best. On several occasion, I wore these shoes in temperatures no lower than -14 F. Even with Darn Tough Mountaineering socks on my feet would quickly get cold the moment I stopped moving and my feet were never actually warm. I would best describe the comfort level of these boots at -14 F as tolerable even when active. I actually called REI about this and the representative that I spoke to there seemed to be in disbelief that these were so highly recommended for winter hiking stating that, "there is no insulation in the toebox" The heel brake could have been more pronounced to provide more stability and traction in snowy and wet conditions. Flatter heel cup than I am used to. Less arch support than I am used to. Traction is just ok. Hiking at Devils Lake I found I was much more confident going up ice-covered rocky surfaces than I was down. Going up you know that you have good traction/purchase before trasfering your weight. I would not wear these boots on ice covered surfaces without micro spikes or crampons. Lastly after 470 miles these boots are no longer waterproof as the leather and started to separate from the mid/outsole of the boot (see pictures). I actually purchased these boots on December 7th or 8th and by March 24th these boots were no longer waterproof. In the end these aren't horrible boots. I am admittedly very hard on footwear. They weren't outrageously expensive and I would venture to estimate that most people would get their money's worth. The frustrating part for me is that I feel the specs were very padded and I tend to doubt that the experts recommending these boots have ever hiked with them in sub-zero temps. I will not be returning these boots as I may need them in the future if I am hiking near the equator and I do like some things about them.

Runs small, but it’s a nice comfy boot

Some say true to size, which I don’t get.. I always wear 10.5, preferably wides, for both Keen and New Balance shoes. When wides aren’t available I may wear an 11 instead. For this boot I had to buy a size 12. My recommendation would be to add a half size if you typically wear wide shoes and another full size just because it’s a boot. I just recently purchased, so I don’t have a long term feel for how they’ll age.. but the fit feels very nice and they look pretty sharp as well. Seemed to have a good grip on snowy surfaces.
