The shape has changed to narrower. They are shaped more tapered and pointy. They are no longer good for my wide foot.
In a sea of ankle high boots the Keen Revel IV Polar boot stands out. The boot reaches my calf and I bought it specifically for shoveling snow in my driveway. Things that stood out: (1) The toe box is not as wide as a typically Keen boot. I wouldn't describe it as narrow, it just is not generous. (2) The material(s) seemed quality, not a cheaply made boot. (3) The sole is fairly aggressive. (4) This is the worse one - the heel seemed flat-footed. My foot felt like it was in a moccasin instead of a boot. It didn't feel right to me and the only reason that I ultimately returned it. It might appeal to some.
The fit is true to size so I went with one size up to accommodate thicker winter socks. The fit is a touch big with thin socks but perfect with a typical wool med to heavy weight sock by going up one size. The toe box is slightly smaller than most Keen shoes but still plenty wide to allow toe movement. I wear a size 12 Keen and bought a 13. A 12 would have been too small with heavy wool socks. The boot is stiff and will take some break in time but not painful to wear. The laces are not as bright red as they appear and are more of a maroon color. They look better in person unless you want bright red laces. The one con is the felt insoles. They are glued in and not removable. They are comfortable and provide a decent arch support but it would have been nice to have the option to swap them out if a better arch support was needed or replace them once the felt wears down. The temps haven’t fallen below 50 yet and they are too warm to wear now. I’ll update the review once I’ve put some miles on them this winter.
Now that we have had a couple of snow storms, I was able to try these boots out. I think they are a fantastic pair of boots. The are warm and comfortable. I'm very impressed with the traction on ice. I actually had to touch the sole with my fingers to believe it. That is when I noticed that parts of the sole had a gritty substance to help with the traction. Very smart engineering. I will say that sonce they are not completely broken in yet, they are a little stiff. I'm sure that with time, the stiffness will go away. Awesome boots, go get you some!
Did a lot of research and glad I picked these boots. I live in Maine and work outside all winter so good footwear is a must. The boots are very warm and lightweight for their size. Much much lighter than leather winter boots like Irish setter or Chippewas. They have an athletic feel with excellent traction and the soles are made of a softer rubber to grip better in the cold. They do run on the narrow side for keens. I’ve had a handful of keens and usually wear a 10.5 - 11. Currently wearing a pair of Pittsburghs size 11. So decided to go 11.5 with the Revel’s. I’d say they’re a bit narrower than the Pittsburg’s even a half a size bigger. But they’re still a pretty good fit as I lace/tie them on the loose side. So if your trying to figure sizing I would definitely go half to a full size bigger than normal. The traction is far superior than the Pittsburgh’s, which are terrible on packed snow. I will also say that the color is a bit different than the pictures online. The magnet/red boots are actually kind a dark olive color and the laces are a dark red, almost like a maroon. Overall great winter boot. Hopefully they last!
will update if I get a day where i'm in there longer. defiantly get 1 size up, of course. I got a half size larger because one of the people that work at REI said to get your normal size and so I went .5 up. should've went with a full size though. the part of the freezer i was in for most of the time was 0F, and normally my old boots, the kamik Griffon Winter Boots would've started to get cold pretty fast in that section and I would've felt some type of chill by the time i fully left it. I was toasty the whole time with the Keen boots. Hopefully i'll get to test them for all day in there someday. soul insulation is pretty important in a frozen warehouse as concrete seems to suck any energy out of your feet pretty quickly. makes sense. and that, along with the 8" ankle for good upper seal were my big selling points for these. they're not very heavy.
As others have stated, the lace guide on the tongue of the boot ripped out almost immediately. That was not a huge deal for me, but the boots are also very uncomfortable and they are not warm. Two stars because the outsole is actually very good. I wore them on mixed surfaces with ice and snow and the outsoles were very tacky. If I could have the same outsole on the Targhee high WP keen would have a perfect winter boot.
I wanted to love these boots but as soon as i pulled the laces to tie them up the small piece of fabric that the laces cross thru ripped off on ONE boot. Took them back to REI and have ordered another pair. The staff at REI were excellent and agreed with me that this looks like a design flaw. I plan to also share this feedback with KEEN.
If you love keens than you love keens. veteran keen owners know that not all keen footwear kicks butt. my forst keens were the best. leather in and out. unbelievably comfortable. since my first pair, i have owned some keens with design flaws that have been fixed. I now hike in Vasque boots. i live in my sandals in the summer and work in keens year round. with that said, i just got and wore my Revel IV boots and already love them. they are rugged. stiff warm and exactly what i needed. We snowshoe a lot and my wife got some keen boots three years and absolutely loves her Hoodoo III's. they both fit true to size ( she has narrow feet and i dont have wide feet.). Ill get these out on the ice and that will be the big test for boots in Maine winters. Im not worried.
These would be great boots, but unfortunately they’re very poorly made. I wore them only twice and one of the tongue lace guides broke and a metal eyelet came out completely.
