This has only been out on one camp trip but it was useful, worked as well as expected and seems sturdy and well manufactured. It’s not super compact but fits well into our camp kitchen tote and doesn’t feel cramped or overly designed. The knives have cut well and the board didn’t seem as soft as other have mentioned.
I have gnashed my teeth and shaken my fist over the past several decades making roadside and national park parking lot lunches for the family because my knife sliced the top of the cooler that is my cutting board, or my small pocket knife got lost in the tub of peanut butter. Finally I pried open my wallet and purchased this kit from GSI outdoors. Wow why didn’t I splurge a little years ago and saved myself all the hassle. The kit has everything you need to whip up a great lunch on the back end of your car or picnic table and in GSI fashion, very thing has a function. The three knives are razor sharp. The cutting board is lightweight and folds but holds up to slicing. Since we only using for road trips, I’m hoping that the fold doesn’t break apart. The wash cloth even has a great rough side for scrubbing. Great set up, and the kit is narrow enough to fit easily in our frunk.
DIdn't survive the mailing to my house--two of the blades were snapped at the handles and are effectively unusable (without caution). Doesn't bode well for use as a travel cooking knife set. Velcro supports hold the knife at the top of the blade and the bottom of the handle--the blades on the biggest and medium knives snapped at where the metal inserts into the plastic handle.
We've had this knife set for about a year now and have taken them on several car camping trips. We absolutely love this set! We were trying to get away from just sticking knives from home down into our kitchen box, then worrying about accidentally cutting our hands reaching in. This set is perfect for us! 3 different sized knives for anything from cutting up fruit, veggies, or meat, to large items like melons, even a serrated knife for delicate items like bread and tomatoes. Each knife has its own sheath, is individually secured inside the case, then the case zip up all around. We haven't used the cutting board yet, as we already had one for camping. This set has made a huge impact on our basecamp experience!
I really enjoy this set! The three knives offer a great variety for your camp cooking needs. I've used the cutting board when my other cutting boards were occupied, so it was nice to have it. The case can also fit a few more things, I'm storing a wine opener in mine. Overall, this kit is an excellent addition to a car camping set up. I like how everything fits in the case and keeps it all organized. No more worrying about random knives floating around in the camping bin.
This is a car-camping staple but also comes along when I am bringing gourmet food to cook out on the trail. The zippered pouch has plenty of extra room that I am able to stow everything in this kit in there ALONG with my nCamp collapsible wood-stove. Nice and flat and it can lay right across my back in the pack or slip in the back of the SUV without taking up much space at all.
Knives seem sharp and durable, time will tell. The case is great though and just what I was looking for. I could see the folding cutting board eventually failing and ending up as two separate pieces but should work for a while. I had room in the case to add silverware for two, and a full size spoon/spatula/tong set from my kitchen.
This knife set is better than all the knives in my kitchen! So much so...I just us them instead! Great set of knives and the carrying tote is perfect for packing the knife set for a to-go road-trip, camping adventure, or an afternoon picnic. The cutting board is decent...but does start to show cut marks after awhile, but for a travel cutting board, it is great! I highly recommend adding this knife set to your gear box or your kitchen. Excellent product.
Just got back from a camping trip with this knife set and I was super impressed! Blades are sharp, easy to handle and stay put in the case. I ended up throwing out my other cutting board after using this one to save on space. This case is easy to pack and keeps the knifes safely tucked away inside my camp supplies.
Initial review - I’ve used this on one trip. We cut potatoes and onions, and used the serrated blade to cut bread. They’re not the best knives, not properly weighted, but they are a great value, comfortable, and get the job done. They feel nice and solid. The blade is sharp. The case is a nice quality and the cutting board is large. I’d buy this again if my long term review holds up. No issues so far
