I spent the pandemic hiking with a friend and wore a pair of the Keen's out...this is my third pair and I absolutely love them! For the trails within 45 minutes of Carson City - they've been perfect!
Overall, these are great boots/shoes. How great? I’m on my second pair since the mid-2000s. That said, I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 because the lining wore out in the heel of both shoes—just as it did on my first pair. Not a deal-breaker, but it is a borderline comfort issue. Usage - Day hikes and fitness walks up to ±15 miles on hiking trails, gravel roads and around the farm. Some rock scrambling (Billy Goat Trail/s, Old Rag, etc.). I pretty much only use them during winter/colder months (Oct. thru Mar.), as I’m typically in my Keen Newport sandals the rest of the year. Will likely buy my third pair, when the time comes. - Wear with SuperFeet insoles (green) + thick wool hiking socks - Fit: I wear 11-E dress shoes. I sized-up to 12-regular Targhees—I've got ample room but am not swimming in them. - Pair in pic/s (current) pair was purchased March ’18 and has ± 1,800 miles on them Good - Super comfortable - Wide toe box: they accommodate my bunions. - Good traction & stability - Good durability (except for heel lining) - Excellent value Bad - Lining wore out in both heels. The same thing happened with my previous pair. - Would prefer a stiffer sole; sometimes I can feel gravel. - Minor cracking outside toes; so far, it’s a non-issue
Reasonably light, comfortable after a short break in period, vent well; feet did not overheat, great grip, toe bumper saved my foot. FYI, 6’ 2” and 250lbs. Just finished 3 hiking outings as part of our vacation. We did the 1mile down to OOH AAH point on the South Kaibab and 5 additional miles on the South Rim trail. We did both trials at Bandelier Nat Mon in off and on rain and today, in persistent rain which turned to snow we hiked both trails at Tent Rocks Nat Mon. The slot canyon had many puddles and in a number of cases, no way to avoid stepping in them. After 3 hours of assorted moisture and stepping in standing water my socks and of course my feet were dry. The shoes get more comfortable each outing and they gripped everything I placed them on. Very happy with these shoes!
Keens fit my feet well so I am a fan. These were a lightweight shoe that I thought would be an improvement over my older keens that are much heavier but sturdier. I am one year and 5 months into my new pair and they are coming apart at the seams. A bit past the exchange period. I have only worn these in the summer. Hiking-wise, they are good, but the soles are too thin for rocky trails. I can feel the rocks too much.
I have had three pairs of Keen Targhee Vents shoes and both pairs have worn very quickly. REI did replace one pair because the separated at the sole in one months time. The replacement pair has not been much better and the inside heel is falling apart. I have had several pairs of Keens over the years including at least 3 pairs of Durants and expected better. I am a 200lb active hiker so I am probably hard on footwear but still they should hold up better than they have. I guess for someone who stays indoors they would be fine.
comfortable but separating in some places
After trying almost every brand of hiking shoes, I settled on these because they were the most comfortable with my foot shape. You'll probably need to to select a half-size larger than you normally wear, as I did. The comfort and vented design enable me to walk/hike miles and miles without hot spots. The sole materials are grippy and stiff but not as stiff as some other brands so you'll notice a small amount of pressure on super sharp/rocky and rugged surfaces. They're kinda ugly, but the comfort/ergonomics and durability make me happy to get them scuffed and dusty instead of worrying about the design.
I purchased this pair in 2018. After a year of light use, cracks are developing along and just above the welt. I've also experienced durability problems with my Newport sandals. The quality of Keen appears to have slipped. I gave this pair two stars instead of one only because they are comfortable.
Excels in sharp, pointy rocks. They eliminate fatigue from uneven surfaces. The soles stick to anything, and don't slide. They have a roomy toe box. There is little venting in the toes, so they feel warmer - like some of the waterproof boots out there. This was the only reason for not being a 5 star boot for me, but below 60 or 70 degrees it is perfect. I only carried light loads with these so far, but I would use them for light backpacking. I normally wear an insole and found these to be comfortable and supportive without. Break in was easy - no discomfort, and the heel fit better once the laces found their grooves. I have a narrow, thin foot in a size 15, and some initial heel slip was gone after a couple hours of use.
Love everything about this shoe and have been buying this brand for years. This 'model' was new to me because the one I had been buying was no longer made. So I bought 2 pair not quite a year ago from REI. Put one pair in service, and the other in the closet. Just started wearing the 2nd pair last month. Went to tie my shoe yesterday and one of the leather loops popped off at the stitching line. It's fine for flat surface walking, but can't wear it hiking as it does impact the fit. So, buying 2 more (because I do love them) and hoping that was a fluke. The coating on the laces fades quickly, so may want to buy some lace locks or plan ahead and buy a pair of back up laces. Other things I like about the shoes is that the soles have tremendous clutch to any surface!
