My new Saris is a pleasing rack.
My new Saris Superclamp EX served me well during a trip to Wisconsin. The ease of loading, secure clamping and intergral locking system gave me confidence that my 29er would be safe. Off and on was a snap, as we rode a variety of locations. Even the swing down feature made it handy to access gear stored in the hatch.
Wobbly and unstable
The rack has a nice two arm clamping system that keeps your bikes in place without touching the frame, which is very convenient. However, the glaring issue with this product is that the joint between the arm that attaches to the hitch, and the part of the rack that holds the bikes, wobbles side to side significantly. Enough that I'm concerned my bikes are going to fall off on the interstate. You can fix this by tightening the nut that holds this joint together, but it inevitably loosens within a couple hours of driving. Makes the whole thing feel very cheap and chintzy.
Came without the locking cable
Purchased this during a promo time when it was $100.00 off the regular price. While it was easy to assemble, unfortunately it came without the locking cable which was one of the selling points of the rack.
Very unstable!!
Just bought this bike rack to carry my new expensive (40#) ebike. Used it today fir the first time and it was extremely stressful! I Could see in my rearview mirror my bike bouncing, jiggling, and rocking back-and-forth with every minuscule bump! Very stressful! I may have to return this unless there’s a shim or something to add stability. I love that it was made in the USA, and the price was middle of the road… But I had hoped for better quality.
Saris SuperClamp EX 2
I bought this rack so I could haul my wife's new Ebike that has fenders, plus my own hybrid. While I can only use one hook for her bike, it is still secure on this rack without touching the frame. This is my third Saris rack ( different bikes, different cars ) and I like the quality of this brand.
I really tried to make it work...
Bought this based on the good reviews and like others have said this thing wobbles like crazy over time. It fits snug in the hitch but the issue is at the pivot point. Basically the interface for that pivot pin has a ton of slop and it loosens the interface over time. At first I thought this would be no big deal and I could just tighten that interface when I need to drive long distances, but then I lose the capability to tilt the bikes back or fold the rack up. However it is now so bad that even when I tighten the interface it still wobbles slightly. At this point it just even worth trying to make it work. For 500 dollars I wouldn't recommend this. There are better options at that price point on the market. The bikes are probably secure but the wobbling really makes me uneasy and I only expect it to keep getting worse. I wanted to make it work as I love the concept of this rack and how compact it is compared to the competition but Saris needs to improve the design! Planning to return after only a couple months of use.
Had to return, rack won’t stay upright
After a few hundred miles of highway use, we had to return it. The rack would not stay locked in the upright position, and kept falling back to the loading position when on the highway. It was very wobbly, even after tightening everything. While stationary, the rack seemed to have a slight lean back when bikes were on it. We have road/hybrid bikes, so they are not heavy. Until we were safely at our destination, we I had to use a lot of bungees to keep the rack upright. Returned to REI as soon as we were near a location.
Super ridiculously unstable movement
There is so much movement when using with a 2" hitch that it is ridiculous to think I paid over $500.00 for this piece! It is also a serious challenge to get an ebike on the inner track because the arms get it the way, no matter how you try to adjust them for initial placement. What a waste of money!
Does the Job Well!
Saris SuperClamp EX 2 is a nice, solid platform bike rack. The Good: *Fits the big ole 29" wheels without issue. *The arms, tire hooks, and wheel cradles are easily adjusted to accommodate bikes of different sizes. *The bikes are held onto the rack sturdily and the integrated cable lock is a great feature. *The fold-down feature is fantastic and offers plenty of clearance for the back gate of an SUV to be opened while bikes are loaded. The Mediocre: *There is some wobble in the rack-to-hitch fit, even despite the threaded hitch pin. *The lock that fits on the end of the hitch pin is a piece of junk at best (the retaining pin inside the lock often pops too high preventing the lock from even going onto the hitch pin). *The rack extends quite far from the hitch and the fold-up feature does nothing to shorten the distance the rack extends.
Defective product; Company does not respond
After about twelve uses in less than a year, one of the arms of the rack stopped functioning properly. It would not lock into place. Repeated phone calls by me plus calls and emails from my local bike shop have gone unanswered.
