Reviewed this sleeping pad against quite a few. Even though I don't do a lot of winter camping, I didn't want to get a pad I wouldn't be able to use in the cold. for this reason a decent R-value was important. I just used this weekend for the first time. Temps only got down into the mid 50s so I have no idea how this handles below freezing temps. That being said, it was extremely comfortable. My body never touched the ground. Maintained its form. Easy to inflate - 20 breaths or so. Deflated and packed easy. I honestly don't k bbn ow how this compares to the regular REI flash with a lower R-value. The slightly larger roll was no issue.
I purchased this pad over a year ago and have taken it on many trips. It’s a great pad when it works, but when it spontaneously leaks during the night and you wake up 4 times to reinflate it, it’s not so awesome. Each time I patched it with gear aids tenacious tape, and at home permanently patched it with aquaseal. Instead of throwing it away, and after seeing this as a possible permanent fix, I prophylactically sealed everything single leak prone weld with seam seal. So far, so good. Two tubes are needed for the entire mattress to cover both sides. I figured it’s better than throwing away a $120+ pad.
Full disclosure - I have only been able to use this once since picking it up a couple of weeks ago so I can't comment on the long term durability just yet. With that said, I'm impressed by the weight to comfort ratio of this pad! I took it out for a couple nights of winter camping in Colorado. Paired with a 15degree quilt, I slept like a baby. I'm a side sleeper and this had enough cushion for my hips without adding a lot of bulk. The quick inflate and deflate valves work well and the pad inflates very easily. REI has really stepped up their game on in-house products and this is no exception.
I like most of REI's gear, and I bought this pad on sale so it seemed like a great choice compared to the much more expensive therm-a-rest. Unfortunately, the seal system from the blow-up valves doesn't hold up and after 1-2 weeks of use on the PCT, I found myself sleeping on the ground after about 2 hours. I had them send me a new one but the exact same thing happened. I looked for holes in both pads but ultimately concluded the leak had to be coming from the blow-up valves. I ended up switching to a therm-a-rest which lasted the next 2200 miles of the trail :) Unless they've fixed this, I really wouldn't recommend.
I ordered this pad before a cross country trip. I slept on it for a week on top of my bed with no problems. Then, once on my trip it failed (and deflated in the middle of the night) the two times I used it. When I went to return it at REI, the sales associate explained that sometimes the inflation seal is not tight, thus causing the pad to leak and deflate through the night. I took the pad back home and did a test for 2 days where I inflated, checked for proper seal, and then let sit. Both times the pad deflated. I could not find any leaks. I ultimately returned the flash pad and bought a therm-a-rest.
I have used about 3 nights, 1x in a hammock and 2x on the ground. I find it very comfortable, more than a Big Agness that I used previously until it sprang dozens of leaks at the welds... so I take similar criticisms of this product with a grain of salt as it seams to be an issue with multiple brands. Buying at a major seasonal sale like labor day and getting 40% off made this extremely cost competitive. I just had an issue with the inflation valve membrane popping off and falling down into the bag. It WAS possible to inflate almost all the way, enough to be comfortable, but I can not find any information on replacing the valve piece.
I'm sorry folks: I'm a recent REI convert who has really "drank the Kool-Aid" when it comes to the Co-op and what it offers, I really dig the place. Unfortunately, this pad absolutely let me down. On the third use it developed a leak at a point where the upper and lower layers are pressed together; it was obvious this is a manufacturing defect and not wear and tear. It left me in a real lurch, I need an insulated pad as my bag is the kind that doesn't have any down between you and the ground. I'm going to be pretty nervous about trusting another inflatable pad after this experience.
I was gifted the FLASH Insulated 3 season air mattress and liked it. Based on that Bought the All Season air mattress for winter camping. One use at 30 F. on snow and in my tent does not tell me much but I expect it will keep me warm down to at least 0 F. Below that I'll use a supplemental closed cell foam mat beneath it as well as day clothing like pants. ** Knowing that REI has had more than ten usual amount of delimitation problems with the FLASH air mattresses I called REI's Customer Service. The CS lady told me that IF either mattress delaminated (ever) or the valves failed REI would replace it. But any other leaks were my problem. I thought that was fair.
I had high hopes for this mat, so much so that I bought two (one for the wife). Unfortunately, on the very first night of our backpacking trip BOTH pads somehow sprung a leak and were completely deflated within hours. Upon visual inspection there was no noticeable hole and the air seemed to be escaping from poorly welded seams (an issues reported by other reviewers). This is the first product REI has disappointed me with I really hope it’s not a pattern.
I have owned the red REI Flash Insulated Air Sleeping Pad and loved that one. I went for this one because of the higher R value and it has yet to disappoint me. A higher R value will not make you too hot, so why not? I'm 5'-11" 180 lbs and the Regular Wide is my choice. The 20' Pads leave me with cold elbows. I can't find an uncomfortable position. My favorite sleep pad!
