It'll keep the bears away, but lacks convenience
It's a nice loud air-horn. Should do the job when I'm hiking solo in isolated places, and let the black bears know I'm coming a mile away so I don't startle them. (WARNING: Don't test the product indoors. You could damage your hearing. It's really that loud.) You probably don't need it if you're hiking with someone, talking and making noise. And if you're in grizzly country, this is useful but it's smart to invest in some bear spray as well. I have 2 gripes with the product: 1.) The button is way too easy to press. I'm worried about inadvertent noise, hearing loss, and/or wasted air. Some kind of double-action safety mechanism on the button would be nice. 2.) It would be helpful if the manufacturer included some kind of hanging loop or clip or carry case.
Very loud, easy to mistakenly compress
Took this on a solo hike into grizzly country. Went off a couple times inadvertently when I accidentally bumped the button on top. A safety would be helpful. I didn't see any bears, but evidence all around, hard to know for certain how they will react. It is certainly loud and I liked the small size.
Bear liked it
We encountered a bear in the cascade mountains and used this horn. The bear seemed interested in it and kept walking towards it and us. Thankfully throwing rocks finally spooked it enough to leave us alone, but the horn did nothing good for us. Bring bear spray.
