works great if installed correctly!
THANK YOUuuuu colt for posting up the pics to install this dumb thing! as colt mentioned, it has to be installed correctly for the cap to snap in place. even the box art is wrong! you basically remove the silicon bite piece, and the slide the ring over it. the base of the bite piece has a ridge that the ring must go over. it'll go over it and snap into place - thatll also enlarge the ring so the cap can snap onto it. its such a simple install but the box art makes it all wrong. i knock 1 star for the lack of instructions, but also cuz it's $7 for this little piece of plastic. maybe $3.50? or for the price of some of these hydration packs (MANTA!), it should be a free accessory.
Works Perfectly When Attached Correctly
This bite valve cover works exactly as intended when installed correctly. While it would have been helpful for Osprey to include installation instructions, it was not hard to locate posts and comments online on how to do it correctly. After removing the soft plastic valve tip, you slide the ring of the cover onto the base of the valve, and it should snap into place. Once you put the soft part back on, it should be flush, and the cap will snap into place.
Does not stay on your bite valve
Bite valve cover does not stay put with minimal movement. The cap just does not fit snugly enough and the hard plastic tether pushes the cap off of your bite valve from just walking on flat ground. Would not buy this. Made sure I had the new hydration pack line that they said this was designed for. Wish they would maybe put some effort into it because they charge for it separately from the hydration packs, but oh well. Still looking for a bite valve cover. Apparently the old Osprey covers were better, so I might be getting one of those.
What a Waste
I’ve been using a plastic bag to cover my bite valve for years but wanted to try this product out. Even though it says it’s compatible with all Osprey hydraulics packs, I don’t think that’s the case. Mine is a few years old and while I technically get it on, the base of the bite valve cover overlaps with the ridges that hold the magnet in place (basically, my magnet slides down the tube much more now with the bite valve cover). Additionally, the strap connecting the base with the cover is too short for my bite valve. This makes it difficult to remove and, on first try, actually caused a tear in my bite valve! Now I have to buy a new bite valve. Definitely returning this. Osprey—design these better and include them with the packs to begin with!!
Just terrible
Was too snug for my bite valve (I have a 2.5L Osprey hydraulics pack that I purchased 3-4 years ago. Thought it would fit since this product says it's compatible with ALL Osprey hydro packs). Because of the too-snug fit, removing the cap caused my bite valve to tear. So then I had to buy a replacement bite valve. Figured this cover might at least fit the newer bite valves better, but no...now it's too big! I tried it out on a hike and the cover wouldn't stay on, defeating the whole purpose. And now the new bite valve is too big for my pack's hose so it's nearly impossible to get on/off (my partner and I have wrestled with it). So now I can't properly clean the bag. In conclusion, this stupid little $5 (on sale) item has cost me way more money and hassle than it's worth AND IT DOESN'T EVEN WORK. Just use a plastic bag or something to cover your bite valve and save your money. I expect better from Osprey :(
Too much work / risk to install
Almost impossible to get on the current 2L hydraulics reservoir. Had to soak the tube/valve in very hot water for 5 min before the valve would even budge; to fully remove it I used a pair of plyers and my entire body weight (to hold the tube down). Even if it works well now, it's not worth the fear of risking breaking your tube to get this on. Osprey, design your own products to work well together. UX and all that.
Too big for the valve
I know this Osprey Hydraulics Bite Valve Cover is only $7.00 but it is a complete waste of $7.00. The cover is way too big for the valve so it doesn't stay on the valve. Please don't market it as a Osprey cover in that is obviously the wrong size. It's not worth the trip to return it, just angers me that it's sold as an Osprey bladder valve cover. Do not buy!!
How did Osprey approve this?
Normally I trust Osprey with sharp functional products, this was such a weird disappointment and a profound bummer for such a little piece of gear. Tried all methods posted online to attach this to my bite valve/hose with no real success. Going to buy a generic alternative.
A Couple of Strikes
Tether is too short--just 1/2" longer would make it easier to use. Cover is too tight on the bite valve, making it a bit of a chore to cover and uncover the valve.
This thing is infuriating.
for the past hour, instead of packing for my trip, i have been trying to install this cover onto my bite valve. it will not budge, and although some other reviews make it out to be really easy to install, I cannot for the life of me get it on, and i can't even see how it's possible to sit flush like it was obviously intended to. There just isn't enough room within the ring to fit the soft part, but since I can't fit it, it won't sit flush with the red plastic bit. There are no instructions, none of this is obvious. Save your time and money.
