Good Trail Food
I took this meal with us to our trip in New Mexico at Philmont Scout Ranch. They have notoriously bad meals at times - especially the dinners, especially in bad weather (think cheap pasta meals in a giant pot during a 12 day backpacking trip - see pic). We had plenty of both. I used this oatmeal to sub in for one of these meals and it was great. Easy and tasted good. It is less sweet than the store instant oatmeal you may be used to so bring something to sweeten it if that is your thing.
Not tasty oatmeal
I generally love oatmeal. When I received this package of oatmeal from REI to try I thought it would be great. It was not. It does have a lot of "goodies" in it: quinoa, currants, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, dried banana flakes, shredded coconut, chia seeds, hemp seed hearts. When I made it, it looked like it would be delicious. It makes a very generous portion for one person. Unfortunately it just doesn't taste good. It has an odd flavor that was unpleasant. I gave my husband a taste and he said it tasted like "survival food", the kind of thing you take and eat only in a dire situation. I tried to power my way through the bowl but could only eat about 1/3 of it. It's incredibly filling. If you can tolerate the taste, it's very hearty at 490 calories and would stay with you a long time.
Good
This was an interesting purchase, not quite sure what I was going to do if I didn't like it in the backwoods. I brought along another breakfast just in case. This is strange, nothing like you would expect of oatmeal. The flavor is good but not sweet, its more of a savory porridge with lots of nuts and great little dried currants that burst with sweet and sour flavor. Once you get over the fact that this is not a super sweet Quaker type oatmeal pouch, its actually quite filling and, dare I say, delicious. The sight leaves something to be desired, the turmeric leaves it kinda dingy yellow and unappetizing, didn't bother me though. I'd buy it again!
Needs work
I am perplexed by the texture of this oatmeal, because it just isn't quite right. It's very very mushy, like you took regular cooked oatmeal and blended it. It seems like they were so focused on making an oatmeal with as many things in it as possible, but forgot to start with a good base oatmeal. However there are some positives, there are tons of yummy mix-ins (pumpkin seeds, dried currants, coconut and banana flakes) which are much needed to break up the mush and the overall seasoning is nice (cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric). Overall, it isn't disgusting, but there are dozens of other tastier, vegan oatmeal options out there (and most are significantly less expensive) so I can't see myself ever purchasing this product.
Strange smell and taste - try before you hike!
This was always going to be hit or miss. The reviews on REI are like Marmite – love it or hate it. Let’s see. We followed the instructions to the letter. What resulted was a really strange gloop. The smell was kind-of-spicy, kind-of-porridge. The consistency was nutty. The taste was, in our opinion, quite vile. The vegetarian of the house however demolished a bowl after returning from a trail run. Verdict: 3/10 for taste 2/10 for cost We won’t be taking this on the trail. A real disappointment.
Great breakfast!
We enjoyed the flavor of this even as someone who isn't typically a huge fan of oatmeal for breakfast :) One thing to note - there is a line about 3 quarters of the way up on the bag that is NOT the water fill line. We didn't notice the actual fill line that is more towards the bottom on the way side of the bag. Maybe we were just tired and hadn't had our coffee yet but wanted to warn others so they don't also end up with oatmeal soup! Even with the soupy-ness we did enjoy the flavors!
Awesome trail breakfast!
This oatmeal made a great breakfast while backpacking! It packs down small and was as easy to prepare as my typical trail breakfast of oats, dried fruit, and peanut butter, except it kept me full for much longer. I don’t usually prefer pre-packaged foods on the trail, as they tend to lack in flavor and have a lot of random ingredients, but this oatmeal packed in all the flavor and contained things typically found in my pantry. There were hints of cardamom, cinnamon, coconut, and currant, which made this an all around delicious breakfast. Since it contains quinoa, I think it would be perfect for a cold morning breakfast or rainy evening dinner before climbing into the sleeping bag.
The Best
I don't understand what is with all the negative reviews. This is the only 'backpacking' food that I have ever enjoyed. It seems to have nutritious ingredients. And it is pretty calorie-dense. I know it's expensive. But might as well just expect that I guess. If you buy a $0.25 pack of oatmeal, that's exactly what you are going to get. A $0.25 pack of 'oatmeal' I don't know how to describe the flavor. But it's probably even better with some honey on top.
Much Better than Instant Oatmeal
Compared to a couple packets of instant oatmeal, this oatmeal rocked. It was marked as a single serving, but it was a big serving, full of different flavors and textures. The other Good To Go packets I tried needed some extra standing time to fully cook, so I left this one longer too, but then the oatmeal part tasted a bit mushy. It wasn't as sweet as I expected, which I think will appeal to more backpackers. When I added the water, the package expanded nicely to sit upright, and collapsed flat again to be easily packed out.
Excellent porridge but not oatmeal
Personally i liked it - partially because it is very different. I certainly would not reach for this if i want real oatmeal... Completely different flavor and texture... but if you are doing multi day hike this could be welcome change from regular oatmeal - just make sure you try it first.
