All in One
Great compact multi-stage sharpening tool for knives and axes. I don’t use use the grittiest side on my knives as it’s a little overkill but great for an axe. My only complaint is they printed the benchmade logo into the heaviest grit file making it skip as you pull. Would prefer it like the other side (finer grit) which is smooth. All in all I would buy it again. Everything else works great and is good quality. I can get a razor sharp edge in less than a minute. The leather strop is a nice touch.
Razor sharp edge on the go
This thing is no joke. While I can agree with the other reviewer that the benchmade logo on the gritty side is a slight nuisance, I rarely use that side and wouldn't really use it for daily sharpening, let alone for a knife. Although it works well for sharpening at home, my primary use for this will be when I go hunting. Being able to keep a blade razor sharp is important when dressing an elk. The leather strop is a cool touch you often see overlooked in sharpening knives. This device could easily serve as a primary sharpener for anyone Does it make the knife as sharp as my Worksharp grinder does? No, but it still does one heck of a great job and gets close for such a portable unit.
Skeptic now believer
I have one Benchmade knife I could just never get sharp. All my other knifes and even a hatchet I can easily shave hair off back of my hand after sharpening. Asked the REI staff member for suggestions and he highly recommended this sharpener. I have rough wet stone, Arkansas stone, rods, leather strop all the things this sharpener does so I was skeptical. I said “If it doesn’t work I can bring it back and he said sure”. I tried it out on my difficult knife and in short order was surprised I could shave the hair off my hand like other knifes I sharpen. Tried it on one of my “sharp” knifes and it was scary sharp. I am taking sharpener with me this week when visit son in Alaska. Hoping he likes it and will give him mine getting another when I return.
Benchmade Keeps Your Knife Sharp
It is a Portable Knife Sharpener that WORKS ! IT DOES WHAT IT SAYS !! It has a coarse diamond plate, a fine diamond plate, a ceramic honing rod, and a leather strop to finish the edge. It can be a bit wobbly to use, especially with the ceramic rod. Thats why it gets a 4/5. Otherwise, its Solid and Very Well Built, its Compact, Light Weight, and Will Put a Hair Popping Edge On your Blade - once you get the hang of using it. I recommend using some flat, non slippery surface to keep the sharpener in place and level. It will work much better that way. 🗡 STAY SHARP ! 🗡
Great sharpening tool.
This is closer to a 4.5. This is a great field sharpening tool for your knives, hatchets, and hand axes. Ive used plenty of rolling/guided sharpeners and this is by far a better alternative. I only have 2 issues with this product: 1. This is branded/licensed out by/from Benchmade/Worksharp as a result, this product is $10 more than the non-Benchmade branded version. But I needed to pick it up sooner than Worksharp could deliver it to me, so beggars can't be choosers. 2. The coarser/more abrasive side is stamped with Benchamde's logo.As a result, using this side feels more bumpy when sharpening a tool. So far, I haven't noticed a negative impact in sharpening, but I would have very much preferred for this surface to be uniform all the way across and maybe stamp the logo somewhere else. Aside from that, great tool. The built in ceramic rod is also a great at sharpening serrated edges. It would be nice if REI carried the replacement parts if/when the sharpening surfaces wear out. Little pro tip: The sharpening surfaces are held by a magnet, so for long term storage/pocketability, flip them inside out to save your pockets/sotrage surfaces from premature wear.
Sharpen like a Pro!
Great piece of kit to have! If your wanting to sharpen your own knives, this is an easy way to do it. All the components are in one unit, all it takes is a little patience and you will be pleased with the outcome. Make sure to watch the video on Youtube: Benchmade Sharpening.
I own one. It works
I taught myself to sharpen a knife with one of these. Obviously I purchased it somewhere else. Follow the directions and you will be able to shave with even a cheap knife. I bought a few knives out of a bin (3 for $10) and used them to perfect my technique. There is no need to damage a good knife. I now have one in my truck and need to get another for my hunting pack.
Best ever with modifications!
Fantastic sharpener and would give it 5 stars if the name BENCHMADE is removed from the course side. Blade skips due to engraved recesses. Very difficult to sharpen a wood chisel. Otherwise a perfect tool!
One sharpener for all
After years of using German pumice and Japanese mud-stone sharpeners - I decided to give this product a try and I'm not at all disappointed. In fact, for a fraction of the cost for those other two sharpeners - this one does just as well - if not better. It's compact, well-designed, and can sharpen pretty much whatever you want. The built-in 20 degree angle and adjustable ceramic rods are very nice features. I was able to "resurrect" an antique serrated bread knife to original glory - something the other sharpener types can't do. A solid sharpener for all your needs.
Learning curve but effective
Once you get the hang of holding blade at correct angel (from guides) and not letting it change or slip the sharpness is outstanding. Similar to old stone sharpening kit when I was a kid but this is far more effective and easier to learn
