I bought this for hiking in Hawaii. I was fitted for and purchased the Women's pack in an REI store. I have a very small frame, 5ft tall, this was just slightly too big, but still manageable. The rain fly was super easy to access, a must for Hawaii hiking. The pockets on top were great for accessing smaller gear quickly. I would have liked the hip support strap to have just a slightly larger pocket to fit my phone for quicker access for pictures. Finally, because of my small frame, I found my hydration tubing to be far too long for the backpack strap and was dangling freely as I hiked.
I wanted a medium sized day hiking backpack that was also good for airplane travel too and from hiking destinations. This might be the perfect all around bag and by far the best one I've ever used. The bag fit is amazing thanks to the adjustable shoulder strap / torso size adjustments. The mesh back separation is a must for all my hiking bags and prevents my sweat from soaking into the bag. It fits my 3L Camelbak perfectly. The hose does squeak on the H2O port, but I put a wrap of gaffer tape (I never travel without a roll) on the hose and it stops all the noise. The metal framework also squeaks a little on the backpack material, but it's not something that bothers me too much considering you can't really hear it over the noise your boots make...eventually plan to pad this area with tape. The side hip belt pockets fit my iPhone 6S with case and are easy to open and close. The bag shape is very narrow and doesn't stick out too far from your back. This makes for much better maneuverability and a better center of gravity when on more challenging trails. When travelling, it fits all my electronic gear including: chargers / cables, camera gear and lenses, photography filters, noise cancelling headphones, kindle, and there's still room for a light jacket. My large tripod secures well to the side. Once on the trails I can carry all my photography gear, hat, gloves, jackets, 3L of water, and lunch with room to spare. The panel loading design makes this a great bag to work from when doing photography from a tripod. One negative is the key clip. (See my photos) It has an internal lip that allows the keys to slide out of the key clip when bouncing around on the trails. Almost always the keys were out of the clip when I opened the bag. To fix this, I cut off the Osprey key clip and installed a lockable mini carabiner. Another thing the bag is missing are gear attachment straps on the back side over the vertical pocket. When needed, I attach gatekeeper style straps to the upper and lower side straps. Some people complain that there is not a "shove it" pocket on the back. Instead, this bag has the vertical zipper pocket which I much prefer. It's much more secure as nothing will ever fall out of it. For the airplane travel part of the trip, it holds papers, kindle, etc. much better than entering the main compartment. I bought this bag right before our recent trip to New Zealand where we hiked daily for 3 weeks. I was a little nervous about using a new untested bag, but it worked perfectly. Best bag I've ever owned.
Most comfortable pack I've used yet. Loaded from 20 to 24# then hiked 34 miles in 3 days. Never felt anything on my shoulders. Finished a 1.5 mile 1100' climb with a dry back too. Recommend very highly. Will compare any future packs to this one. The rear pocket configuration seemed strange at first with the vertical zipper. But it turns out to work pretty well. When the pack is fully loaded and pushing on the smaller pockets you can access all items in the rear pocket without having to first unload upper items as in a standard pocket.
My 3 year review of the Osprey Men’s Stratos 24 Backpack (1000+ days) Pros: • Durability/Ruggedness • Airspeed Suspension • Lightweight in relation to strength • Fit – Forms to body and highly adjustable • Supports heavy loads and disperses weight evenly • H2O ready with bladder compartment and water tub straps • Raincover Cons: • Pricier than Walmart packs • Heavier than a cloth sack that holds 24 liters • 24 liter Stratos cannot hold more than 24 liters (crazy!) I purchased the 2015 version of this bag and have put this pack through the ringer. I have used this bag most weekdays and a number of weekends since 2015. That’s well over 800 days of wear, opening zippers throwing on the ground, etc. I use this for many things: • Daily commute (Road Bicycle and Motorcycle) • Travel pack (and as carry on for airplanes) • Hiking • Camping • Cycling • Festivals/events (ACL, SXSW,etc) • General I have used this pack in just about every way possible, and in almost every instance it has served me well. I use this bag every day on my ride to work and carry a 15 inch laptop, lunch, shoes and change of clothes, and fill the pockets with chargers, phone, and half my bathroom supplies because they fit. The laptop is protected and on days when it rains the cover keeps it safe and has never felt a drop of rain even in torrid downpours. I have camped with this back and gone on numerous day hikes and quick morning walkabouts. The fit is A+ and the pack makes the weight of the gear light on my body and allows me to retain mobility with heavy loads. This is more of a middle sized/function bag, that is not in the same class as the lighter water focused packs, nor is it in the range of the trunk like full camping bags. I recommend you check bags out in person to get an accurate feel for sizing, feel and frame. The rigid wire that lines the back is very strong and will not bend, the Stratos is NOT packable and not made to compress vertically, but will slim down horizontally in relation to the amount of gear packed. The AirSpeed suspension is the greatest backpack feature ever created, I have piled on more weight than is imagined and the bag has always allowed air to pass through and cool me down. Keep in mind, AirSpeed pushes the pack about 1-2 inches away from your body to create the cushion. If you are looking for a small slim pack, this is not the bag for you. Durability: I have thrown this bag around for nearly every day of the last 3 years and while is shows signs of love, nothing has ever broken on it. Straps are all intact, plastic fasteners are all 100%, zippers work as new, outter shell has zero holes or rips. I have dragged this bag in dirt and on much more abrasive concrete numerous times, I rode with it on my Motorcycle from Dallas to Austin with a full pack for over 200 miles and 4-5 hours and it never gave me issues. The amount of wind whip my poor pack has suffered is immense and yet despite daily rides not a single strap, pocket, or piece of cloth is frayed. Would I recommend this bag? Yes without question, I do this routinely when people see me with it. Would I buy this bag again? Yes, but I won’t have to because it’s a tank that will last forever.
I like it! I've been using it for a few weeks on my long walk to work, and it's very comfortable, with the belt or without. It fits slightly less stuff than my old cheaper one, but that's because it's shaped instead of being a large sack, and there's still plenty of space. (It will fit a laptop easily, although that's obviously not its intended purpose). The ventilation seems good, although it hasn't been warm enough to really test it yet. One issue: the small attachment loops on the front of the left strap rub against my arm (unless I have the between-straps connector tightened, but I hate that). I had to cut off the loops and put ducktape over the hole.
I bought this a few weeks ago and have used twice so far. Even though it's a men's pack it still works awesome for me. The waist band on it is amazing. It's so comfy and makes it feel like I'm not carrying anything at all! It's a perfect size for me for the day hikes that my boyfriend and I do. I tend to drink a lot of water, so it Hils my 3L bladder and enough room for another bottle or two, lunch, and a jacket. My only complaint is that the loop on the left side (for trekking pole) scratches my arm when I walk. We kind of fixed it by clipping it to the top clip around the chest.
Used this pack for recent hiking trip in Norway. Perfect for day hikes. Plenty of room for rain gear, extra layers, food and hydration sleeve. The side holders worked great for an extra nalgene bottle. The quick stow loop worked awesome for trekking poles along with quick stow/access of go pro stick. Front vertical zipper is a really nice feature. Top zipper compartments were great for smaller items. The belt kept all the weight on my hope and not my shoulders. I barely noticed the weight. I got a lot of use out of the rain cover which worked like a charm. I also wore the pack while doing some downhill mountain biking and it worked well for that too. Overall very pleased.
This pack is phenomenal, plain and simple. It is slightly heavier than some day packs, however, the weight distribution with the contoured frame feels like you aren't carrying any weight at all. A LOT of thought was placed into this pack - from the compression straps for trekking poles/camera tripods/ etc, to the small hand pockets to easily access granola bars and snacks during hikes, it makes life easy for you. 24 L is enough to carry snacks, my camera, extra layers, my 2L water bladder, and much more on a long day hike. I've never felt like my back was getting hot with the pack on, even on very hot/exposed day hikes, from the engineering in the back pouch. I am extremely happy with this purchase, and I would encourage you to splurge on yourself to start enjoying long day hikes!
I bought this pack after first trying and returning the Osprey Tempest because the hip belt was uncomfortable. Osprey's women's packs seem to be made for curvier women, as the hip belt is sewn on at an angle. I am slender and pretty straight through my waist and hips and this men's pack was much more comfortable for me. The pack is durable and has been perfect for my 5-7-hour day hikes. The only thing I would change is the size of the hip belt pockets-- if they were a little bigger I could fit my cell phone inside (but that's what I get for having a larger than average phone).
Originally got the Talon 22 but returned it after going on a two hour hike. My body was eager to take it off... The bag was really nice but also was a tad too small in capacity, uncomfortable for me, and my water bottle kept falling out anytime I bent over which lead to it being returned I tried this bag and several others, after returning the talon, with the help of REI's friendly staff and right away this bag felt great on my back! I also appreciated the increase in capacity. I want to keep this review easy to read so: What I like: Wider waist strap than talon - I got a gut since the pandemic and appreciate the belt/strap not digging into it Thicker/wider shoulder straps - Very comfy yet breathable! I was nervous that this would be too wide for the peak design capture clip but its right at its limit and didnt struggle to get it on. Perfect! Cinch/tiedown straps - Great for compressing the bag so nothing is shifting around. I reckon this bag will be good for climbing even. It packs down small when all cinched down. Nice! Suspension system - I've had ultralight packs before but it is always at the expense of comfort. I am not trying to save weight at the cost of comfort anymore. Those days are over. I want to be comfortable! I am more than happy to take the extra pound in weight penalty to keep the bag comfortable. And boy is this pack comfy! I expect to it also perform nicely in the summer against a sweaty back. Nothing is digging in my back and it evenly distributes the remaining weight (since most of it is going on the hips because of the waist belt). It feels extremely uniform and there are no hot spots anywhere. I enjoy the front zippered pocket. The talon had a open mesh pocket which I know some people prefer it but my last pack had it and I lost a couple of things because of the open design. So for this to close, I appreciate! Thick handle for aggressively man-handling the pack around. The talon had a thin handle and that did not inspire confidence. Easy to use zippers, even with thick gloves on. The built in rain cover I know will prove useful in the elements. I am a landscape/nature photographer and find myself looking for turbulent weather because I love the photos you find when the weather is menacing. This will be great when trying to protect my gear from rain. (I havent had a chance to get out with it while the weather is crazy) Water bottle holders are deep - Keeps my 40oz+ bottles secure. I dont like using water bladders because of the electronics that I haul around and dont want to tempt fate with a punctured bladder or the top opening so its important that the exterior bottle holder can handle two big bottles. The talon kept dropping my steel takeya 40z anytime I bent over even with really cinching down on it. This guy does not have that problem. The things I dont like: zippers could be a little easier to open/close but they are acceptable. They are easy to manipulate with gloves on but they dont glide easily. The front zipper pocket could open a tad more. I struggle getting my binoculars in there but its no big deal. This is my first quality hiking pack after my 15 year old tiny swiss pack I got from walmart finally gave out. The huge increase in comfort, quality, and features is absolutely great for the premium price. This is orders of magnitudes better. Very please with it. Here is the stuff I have been able to carry with it and there is still some room to spare (perhaps one more liter of gear can get squeezed in): Full frame camera body and 28-75 zoom lens on it packed in a sleeve case or on shoulder strap with capture clip (awesome product for photographers!). I carry the camera in the bag to travel with and once I am hiking, its out which opens some interior space) Two spare batteries 50mm prime lens polarizing filter 48 oz nalgene 40 oz takeya Rain pants Waterproof shell jacket windshell jacket fleece jacket thick pair of gloves beanie spare socks headlamp and spare batteries multitool wet wipes (great for cleaning yourself off after a sweaty day!) first-aid kit lighter 4 meal bars wallet 10x42 binos keys I attached a photo of the pack loaded with everything I listed. As you can see, it handles a full day of hiking in inclement weather perfectly. Best thing is that it is extremely comfortable. Your mileage may vary so its always a great idea to try it on for yourself to confirm. If Osprey would tackle climbing packs, I would seriously consider replacing my current climbing packs because dang this pack is good.
