Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good hammer where weight reduction isn't critical I can't say I agree with the previous reviewer's comment about this being needed with an MSR Carbon Reflex tent, as I see no point in reducing the tent strength to reduce weight and then adding a hammer. I won't carry this with my MSR Hubba Hubba NX for the same reason, but I didn't get it for that. My wife and I go car camping with an REI Kingdom 8. We love it, but with that tall profile and those steep sides winds do pull at it strongly in a storm (as I found out). I added the extra guy lines so I can put out all lines at all 8 points that line up with poles. Then I added 8 MSR Cyclone tent stakes that sort of screw into the ground to get more holding power. I had a plastic tent stake hammer in the Kingdom 8 bag but in hard ground it didn't do well at sinking the MSR Cyclone stakes. This hammer works well for that and will live in the Kingdom 8 bag from now on. Sure, it's just a hammer, but it's in the sweet spot being lighter than a claw hammer but heavier than a plastic hammer. The fact that in a pinch it can open a beer bottle is just a bonus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very useful & well engineered product This MSR stake hammer worked as advertised last weekend at Pine Knott Campground in Big Bear Lake, Ca. I setup my 7-man family tent wit h a variety of heavy duty and light duty stakes. The hammer claw worked well as a tool to remove the stakes while breaking down camp. I purchased this MSR stake hammer because it is a cool looking, fine crafted tool for the job. Although 11oz is considerable weight to carry in a backpack, I would bring this hammer on easy weekend backpacking outings as well. On more difficult hikes, where every ounce matters, this tool will stay home. A bit expensive, but a cool tool nonetheless.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MSR TENT STAKE ARREST... Bought this for camp. It seems like a decent wall tent camping tool. Too heavy for practical lightweight camping. I had plans to modify it to accept a 7 inch ice pick to turn it into an accent arresting tool, where a full size ax was not needed but an arresting tool like Logans claws from x-men desired. While Watching Youtubers fall hundreds of feet down ice snow flows without an arrest tool. I was thinking to save weight you could use this as an alternate when a long stab handle is not needed but a short light arresting tool might be desired. Its a nice little hammer and it hits real well. It could also make a nice presentation award at a fraction of the climbing ax price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Stake Hammer The ground in the Colorado mountains is very hard year round. The light weight plastic stake mallets do not hold up well when using any type of metal stake. The MSR stake hammer is a little heaver than the plastic mallet, but the ability to drive stakes into the hard ground and then remove them when it's time to strike camp makes the weight difference negligible. I am a Boy Scout leader, and have had other leaders & scouts borrow this stake hammer, then ask where I bought it. "GREAT PRODUCT"

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great hammer I recently purchased this MSR stake hammer and yes it is indulgent. I could use a rock to pound in my tent stacks, but that damages them prematurely. The MSR Stake Hammer worked perfectly, both driving the stacks into the ground and removing them from the ground. I was recently at a high peak in the Cascades where the ground was very rocky, this stack hammer had zero issues getting my tent stacks into the soil. The extra weight in my pack was equalized by the knowledge that my tent would be up without bending my tent stakes. Perfect item...and let's be honest, it looks cool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great little hammer Awesome hammer and must have for MSR's carbon reflex 2 because stakes are required for set up. Sometimes a rock just won't do when setting up on hard dry soil. Lightweight and inexpensive, there's really no reason not to get it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quick and Easy Staking Makes pounding stakes into rocky terrain a piece of cake. It's a no-brainer for car camping. I used this thing to pound right through some softer rock in the Rockies. If you're backpacking and counting ounces it may seem like a big sacrifice but depending on where you'll be pitching it's definitely worth considering. It's not a whole lot heavier than the plastic ones, it's much more compact, and it sure beats using a rock.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a backpacker's hammer. This hammer is light, sturdy, compact, and just what you want if you have to pound tent stakes into harder ground. Plus, it's a fine sleeping comfort close to hand. Note claw.
