Uneven grind, still razor sharp
I decided to spend the extra money on this hatchet vs a Fiskars or Husqvarna because something about it being hand forged made me believe that it would have the quality to last a lifetime. Unfortunately I can not wait that long to write a review. What I can say is out of the box it was razor sharp. I shaved hair off of my arm with it. But it was obvious not grinded equally on both sides. I will post a picture and it is apparent. This made me question how it would function. In all honesty I realized how much of a learning curve using a tool like this is. A much more skilled user might give a better review but it continues to hold its edge after multiple uses. I give it 4 stars because of the weird grinding. If anyone can explain to me the purpose of that I would give this 5 stars, regardless of the price
Great compact hatchet
Small enough to backpack with, good for processing smaller branches and average sized pine trees. Can't get two hands on it for big swings, not big enough to split big logs, it's definitely not that kind of axe, but it has good heft for one handed swinging. Good balance, you can choke up for fine work. Very very sharp, very high quality construction all around. The handle is great, I've never gotten blisters from extended use. The blade can be easily reworked with a sharpening puck if you ding it up, but the steel can rust if you don't take care to keep it dry. With good care it's definitely a tool to be passed down to future generations.
Best hatchet ever
I have been looking at hatchets for a while and this one came out on top, not only because of its superior head and awesome handle. It was also the best hatchet for the best price, if your not a frequent camper a $130 hatchet may not be for you. However if your like me and you just love to get dirty and chop stuff down than this is for you. The blade if amazing and holds its edge very nicely. Other full tang hatchets I have give you such a shock when you make contact with something but because of the hickory handle its painless. This is my favorite cutting tool so far and I am looking forward to using it more in the future.
Almike Hatchet for light duty
Been using tomahawks mostly in the past, so thought I’d switch it up and get a light weight hatchet for my 3 to 5 day excursions off trail. Lots of quality hatchets out there but I wanted a Swedish hatchet that had some history and character. A little pricey but worth it in my opinion. Handle grain is tight and oriented properly. Cutting edge is sharp and axe head geometry is perfect. The leather sheath is fitted perfectly and is secured by a leather thong instead of a snap that can be problematic. I love the balance and it adds little weight to your pack. This hatchet will easily process all the kindling you’ll need. I added some paracord wrap to protect the handle from overstrikes.
Amazing Axe and Amazing customer support
The craftsman ship of this axe is outstanding. The handle is flawless. I did have a bit of an issue with the axe head however. Like another reviewer the grind was a tad bit off. More steep on one side than the other, but very minimally so. I emailed Hults Bruk about it with some photos and they responded same day to my email. A gentlemen by the name of John let me know that due to the fact that the axes are handmade sometimes the grind can be a bit off. Regardless he offered to send me a new one asap and a prepaid shipping label to send mine back to them. Other than that I have taken it on a backpacking trip recently and it make processing firewood a breeze. I use to use a knife for that purpose but will never go back. You can't go wrong with this hatchet especially with their level of customer support.
Outstanding quality
I was a bit nervous ordering online but the hatchet looks great! Nice tight grained handle and mirror finish on the cutting edge. The leather holster is really not that great from a functional perspective but it sure looks cool.
Great axe!
Fantastic little piece! For being a smaller axe the weight is great and feel in your hand is top notch. Every cut was deep and direct, the head never wandered like other axes I've owned tended to. It stayed nice and straight making quick work of any small wood cutting project... I've used it for making tent stakes, quick kindling and fuel for fire, and even using it as a crude blade to strip bark from a few pieces I carved into utensils... All in all a great strong blade at a reasonable price for the product.
Beautiful, functional, and great customer support
I spent a lot of time researching to find a hatchet that I could use for our family camping trips. I needed something big enough to do some clearing and splitting, but light enough to take in a backpack. There are a lot of options, and they seem to be roughly into two main groups, broken down by price ($40-75 / $100+). While the Estwing, Rheinland, and Fiskars are nice, I wanted something that I could keep for a long time. While the Almike is a bit of a splurge, I'm so glad I went for it. This is a beautifully made hatchet, with a great piece of steel, and a very simple, but well-balanced design. This is definitely a piece of gear that is going to get a lot of mileage. Our next camping trip is in a couple of weeks, and I'll update the review after I get a chance to use this in the field.
Wow be careful
This is the real deal. Harvesting wood will be a lot more fun. And if I want to cross the sea in a small boat and plunder and loot on the other side, all I need is a shield. It’s light enough. It’s heavy enough. It’s sharp enough. No regrets.
Great Camp Hatchet
I’ve always purchased cheap hatchets from random camping stores, and they’ve never lasted longer than six months. Decided to finally invest in a more expensive hatchet and I’m stoked. The Hatchet itself is a five-star hatchet. Cuts great, doesn’t have a ton of weight to it, but it does the job. The only concern I have is with the sheath. Does not stay on as is. That and it’s not great for using the backside to hammer a tent stake in. But quality hatchet and still sharp!
