Clothing tips
- Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature
- Choose sun-protective fabrics and quick-drying materials
- Avoid cotton because it absorbs water and stays wet
Dress in layers
• Rashguards are quick-drying, formfitting tops that protect against sun, sand and board rashes
• Water shirts offer sun protection in a looser fit than rashguards; they're versatile for hiking or casual activities
• Water shorts: Look for quick-drying bottoms that don’t bind or chafe
• Paddling jackets have gaskets at the wrists and neck to keep water out
• Paddling gloves protect against blisters and blustery days
Consider a wet suit or dry suit when paddling in cool or cold water
• Wetsuits, typically made of neoprene, insulate by trapping water against your skin
• Dry suits are made of waterproof material with watertight gaskets to keep you dry
