• Waterproof: Keeps out hard rain while also being breathable; great for extended outdoor adventures
• Water-resistant: Can handle light to moderate rain but not fully waterproof

Features to consider

• Insulated: Some jackets include lightweight fleece lining for added warmth. If you buy an unlined jacket, make sure it's roomy enough to fit warm layers underneath 
• Reflective accents: Reflective logos, piping or trim offer provide added visibility
• Length: Most rain jackets are waist-length but some cover the hips
• Closures on cuffs, waists, hems and hoods: Elastic closures help seal in warmth; adjustable closures provide an even better seal
