Best Jacket Ever
this is my favorite down hoody ever of all time. it is longer in the back and form fitting for bike or hike outings. perfect for long dog walks of 2-4 miles per day. highly water resistant and nearly waterproof but also warm when completely saturated from rain. 100% windproof with fleece lined pockets for extra comfort and sizable pockets to include 2 inside and 3 zippered outside. am looking to replace this coat now that it is 6 yrs old and a bit flat despite drying with a tennis ball to fluff. no better winter coat. comfortable from 5 to 45 degrees.
Love the jacket
I did lots of research to find the perfect lightweight, warm jacket. REI has great staff assisting with purchases. I am 5'6 135 lbs. I ordered a medium. I went on a hike and wasn't very warm (NH, 15 degree day). I brought the jacket back because I didn't think it was warm enough. I was told that these types of jackets should be snug to your torso. I exchanged it for a small. The warmth is now perfect. I wasn't aware of how goose/down lightweight jackets should fit. Snug is best. Hope that information helps future buyers
Do NOT wash!!
I got this jacket earlier this year. Loved it. It got muddy from the dog park and I decided to wash it. Big mistake. Now my $300 jacket is useless. The directions say machine wash. I washed it on delicate cycle. All the insulation is bunched up in the corners and the jacket is just ready for the trash
good layer for cold weather activities
My first down jacket purchase. I bought this as an extra layer for winter hiking but it’ll be great year round for this purpose at the summit. I layer it under my ski jacket as well on really cold days and it’s kept me out much longer and prevented cold hands and feet. It definitely helps but I need to be somewhat active to stay warm. I’ve worn it standing around at long track meets in the upper 40s low 50s and actually been cold, but once I start moving a little it’s perfect. I really like the athletic fit of the jacket and went with my true size.
OR down ladies jacket
Love the warmth, feel, and look. Also the nifty pocket this coat can be stuffed into, a feature I look for. Washed up puffy and beautiful (only one washing so far and I used a down wash). I am 5’3”, 105 pounds and chose a small. My clothing layers include a thin tank top, a long underwear top, and a thin fleece shirt, which fits perfectly underneath. I will use this coat for backpacking, back country skiing and everyday.
Very disappointed
I am very disappointed in this jacket. The material is very delicate and quickly developed multiple tiny holes that expanded quickly. I tried repairing it with GearAid, but the down kept seeping through making the coat look second-hand after only a few wears. I tried to add photos but the interface did not allow me to do so.
Great for camping and back packing
5'3", 108, athletic build with short legs and arms. I bought a small. I wanted a down jacket to be warm without a lot of layers and good for backpacking. I have worn this jacket three times. When wearing tights, t-shirt and flannel, I was a little cold when in the mid upper 30's, early morning, in an area that doesn't get sun during the day. I was only a little cold over my chest. In subsequent days, I was fine or very warm at 32-37 degrees in shady and sunny areas with warm pants and either a t-shirt with a light long sleeved running top or a cotton long sleeve. My friend walking with me at 32 degrees was chilled in her down coat of similar quality. I love the blue color. I hope the hood and shoulders are truly water proof. The sleeves are a little long, but the xsmall would have likely been tight under the arms and through the back. I wish all down jackets had a bit more down over the chest for when one is stationary.
Warm durable jacket
Ordered this jacket when it hit markdown and scored a great deal. Great color (dark plum with black) nice deep pockets outside, easy to slip hands inside to warm up, inside pockets are roomy enough for a cell phone but they are not zippered, elastic cuff on sleeves runs a little large but not a big deal, overall I would say this jacket runs slightly smaller especially in the hip area, it may be because this jacket does comes down further over the hips than other similar styles. I ordered a large and I can still put a light layer underneath. I'm 5'7 approx 148# I'm more slender on top but busty 36D, waist 28, hips 39 if that helps. It was plenty warm when out in 30 degree temps, high winds with light physical activity, it offered good wind break, fabric feels durable, packs into left pocket but does take some finagaling, if kept in pocket it will have some wrinkles when you take it out but they relax as you wear the jacket. I didn't experience any snow or rain so can't comment on water proofing. Although the jacket feels and looks thin don't be fooled, the 800 down fill is toasty warm without adding bulk would! I would definitely buy this again. I actually liked it so much I tried to order another one in the moonstone color but unfortunately it sold out and my order was canceled. Some other lucky person will get to experience this awesome jacket.
The Best of the Best
After lots of reviewing jackets, I decided to go with the Outdoor Research Helium Down Hoodie. I am very happy with my choice. I own a lot of Patagonia and North Face jackets but decided this jacket had featured that I liked. It is a very light weight jacket. Love the fit (I wear a petite XS in most tops). I like that the jacket is a little longer than the Patagonia jackets/vests. Love the zipper pocket on the chest and the hands, and the open larger pockets inside. The inside pockets are not secure but allow you to stuff a hat or a map in your jacket. The lower back part of the jacket has a little extra room for your bottom and a great fit. Haven't tested the rain blocking materials on the hood and shoulder but plan to add a raincoat anyway. The sleeves end in an stretchy band that does keep cold air out. Great for layering. Love the zippered hand pocket position. Comfortable for keep your hands warm while walking/hiking. Love the metallic gray color and the hood! And it has the life time warranty and quality of Outdoor Research. I got in on sale! It was worth the investment in the research & the purchase.
packable warmth
This weighs nothing and packs so small. I got it specifically for backpacking and bikepacking trips where the days are warm but nighttime temps drop to the 40s -- it's perfect to wear around camp when the sun sets (should work for lower temps with the right layers). Of course it's also great for everyday cold weather activities. I am usually a S or M in tops and glad I went with medium -- enough room to layer, but still fitted enough to provide good warmth. I'm 5'9 and the arms and torso are long enough. An added bonus, the moonstone color is sooo pretty -- I normally default to black, but since I bought it used (through REI's used gear program) I took a chance. It surprisingly matches everything while being more interesting than black.
