Arc’teryx Quality at Its Best
Amazing jacket! It offers the perfect balance of warmth, lightweight comfort, durability, and style. Arc’teryx quality really stands out. Highly recommend—I’d absolutely buy it again.
Lots of changes from the 2020 product.
Out of the box, the Gamma MX Hoody is like most Arcteryx gear I've purchased. Well designed with high end materials and construction. What's from 2020 Gamma MX jacket that I liked so much that I bought two of and wear daily year round? The material. I love the old Gamma MX. I'll circle back once I use the redesigned 2024 product with an updated review. What else changed? Cuff design. These look ok and incorporate an elastic product, but the old ones held up in daily wear and still work well after 3 plus years. The fit is said to be different as well. But after a 50 pound weight loss and ordering a size smaller, I'm not a good judge at this point.
Great all around hoody! It's GAMMA time!
This new GAMMA MX HOODY is great! The Black Sapphire colour is nice and modern especially for our fall season. I just got this jacket a few days ago and I really like the way it fits so far. The new soft shell material feels better than previous models and wearing it on both sunny and rainy days really holds up nicely. As for the fit, it's roomy enough for a thicker sweater and warm enough for a t-shirt. The only thing I wish it adopted from other models of this price point is an inner and arm pocket as well. Lastly, this jacket is perfect for our local Vancouver fall weather and I am hoping they stock up soon so I can get another colour for the winter/spring!
Almost Perfect - Needs Better Fit in Armpits
Overall, this is a fantastic hoody - great for cold-weather activities and daily commuting. The materials, construction, and overall fit are excellent. However, there’s one significant issue: the fit around the armpits is uncomfortably tight. It pushes up and creates noticeable pressure and irritation, which becomes distracting over time. Feedback for the design team: This seems to be a recurring concern with the Gamma MX, as others have pointed it out as well. Slightly loosening the cut around the shoulders / armpits would make a big difference in comfort without compromising the performance or fit of the hoody. It shouldn’t feel like it’s constantly rubbing or pressing against that area.
Agree with the other reviews
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I unfortunately did not read the reviews before buying a new Gamma MX hoody. I had one I purchased 10 years ago in grey and decided I wanted it in Black instead. I should have realized something was up when I was able to sell my old jacket for nearly the same price as a new one. The new one does still look good and I get compliments on it, but it doesn't feel as easy to wear now that the cuffs are longer and the fit is bigger. It's especially noticeable with the front chin cuff. I used to wear my old one zipped all the way up all the time. But, with this jacket it's too high and baggy.
Go-to softshell but those cuffs...
[Employee of arcteryx] I have owned several Gamma MX models over the years. I run cold and I appreciated the added warmth of the fleece backer. This latest generation has a smaller hood which is a pro and a con. I appreciate the reduced bulk, but I am doubtful a helmet will fit comfortably anymore. Overall, the clean looks and quiet mobility make the MX my first choice for cold, dry days. My biggest knock has to be the cuff construction. The elastic is quite tight and the material bunches up right at the inside of my wrist which is irritating. I much prefer the older style cuff design.
Why did you ruin a perfect color with those pocket
I’ve been waiting for a decent blue-grey Gamma MX for seasons. Finally, the "Dk Stratus" color looks amazing on the Jacket version. But why, for the love of design, did you add those bright blue contrast pockets to the Hoody? The Jacket is sleek and monochromatic, while the Hoody looks like a DIY patchwork project. The contrast is jarring and cheapens the aesthetic of an otherwise high-end piece. We buy Arc'teryx for the minimalism and technical look, not for random pops of color that don't match. Please, give us a monochromatic Hoody option. This was a massive swing and a miss.
The sleeves are a bit long.
The workmanship is impeccable, with a fleece lining. The only drawback is that the sleeves are too long. I'm 175cm tall and weigh 74kg. Size L has the perfect width, but the sleeves are a bit long. Hope this helps!
Pocket Ziper can be better
There’s a major fla about the main pockets. Some zippers are designed so that you must pull the zipper slider to move them. But the main pocket zippers on the Gamma MX don’t have this feature, so they gradually open more during use. This is a problem because these two main pockets have vertical zippers that go all the way down, making it very easy for things to fall out. Every time you put something in, you have to zip it all the way to the top, or else you’ll worry about the zipper loosening and things falling out. Also, if you keep your hands in the pocket, the zipper will slide open in time too. On another note, the base color of the Forage / Verve is quite nice, but the logo is too bright and eye-catching
