A versatile 2 person shelter
It's a comfortable 2 person shelter. It can be setup with two hiking poles lashed together. I'm using it with the HMG ultamid 4 mesh inner without floor, and a very large piece of tyvek for the floor. The footprint was not available from REI until recently. I would prefer to use the Big Agnes footprint. I wrote this while sitting in the Eno Lounger DL inside the Gold Camp 3. It rained like crazy last night, but I stayed dry. I wish REI sold the UL version of this shelter, as well as the mesh inserts. I'll probably get the Gold Camp UL5 next.
Good tent for 2 people
Good tent with its pros and cons. Pros: Easy to set up. Can adjust the pole length to allow greater or lesser gap between tent and ground for more or less ventilation. Was able to cook in it with door clipped open. Cons: Was hoping for a 3-person but they would all have to be short. With center pole, compared to the typical, two arch poles on most backpacking tents, the walls sag in slightly. Condensation that collects on the walls wiped off on my sleeping bag. If 3 people were sleeping in it, it would be hard to avoid rubbing up against the walls. I am 5" 11" tall and didn't have but a few inches between the walls and my head and feet. Tent was 3 lb. 12 oz by my measurement. (Tent alone was 2 lb. 5 oz, Pole was 18 oz, and all 12 stakes weighed 5 oz, all three in their own sacks.) The tent has the loop on top so it can be suspended, thus eliminating the pole - would save weight and provide a little more usable space inside. With no floor, a ground cloth is necessary. I purchased a low price 2-person tent footprint, providing plenty of room for one person. Of course, a sheet of plastic would work, too. With 2 people there would be some room for gear, but not plenty. I should have put my rain cover on my pack and put the pack against the wall. Condensation would rub off on the rain cover but not as much on the sleeping bag then. However, the person would need to be pretty close to the pole. I haven't used it in rain or high wind. Good concept, but it's not quite what I was hoping for. Same design, but for 4 people might work better.
