Therm-a-Rest  Vesper Quilt 20

Title: Design defect: one wash per the sewn-in care instructions left entire baffles empty — irreversibly I bought this quilt new in October 2024 and used it roughly 3 nights a week — it was my primary quilt for backcountry trips in the Cascades. Warm, light, well-made on the surface. Then I washed it once, and it's done. I followed the sewn-in care instructions exactly: Nikwax Down Wash Direct in a front-loading machine, cold delicate cycle with extra rinse and spin, tumble dry low with tennis balls, manipulating the down throughout. This is not my first down wash — I've washed down jackets, pants, and sleeping bags for years with this exact process, zero issues. The result: the down migrated through the internal mesh that separates the baffles and consolidated into a few chambers, leaving entire baffles completely empty. Hold it up to a light and you can see straight through sections of the quilt (see photos). The mesh lets down pass one way with no practical way to work it back. Hours of manual redistribution accomplished nothing. Empty baffles means no loft, which means no warmth — the quilt no longer performs anywhere near its temperature rating. This is not an isolated unit. Search "Vesper redistribute down after washing" and you'll find a thread on r/Ultralight with multiple owners reporting the identical failure after washing. The construction that creates the quilt's loft is the same construction that fails when you wash it — which makes this quilt effectively unwashable, and a down product you can't wash is disposable by design. For a product marketed on RDS-certified responsible down, prematurely landfilling that down defeats the entire point of the certification. To be clear about what this review is and isn't: I'm not claiming misuse, a shipping issue, or bad luck. The failure was triggered by following the manufacturer's own care label. I've filed a warranty claim with Cascade Designs and will update this review with how they handle it. If you buy this quilt, understand that machine washing it — even exactly as instructed — may permanently ruin it. At this price, that should be a dealbreaker until the baffle design is fixed.

I was really happy with this bag until I had to wash it. The down shifted around into different baffles and can’t be shifted back to empty baffles. Seems to be a common problem with this bag.

The quilt after using it on the PCT is exactly what is advertised. I have it over top of Therm-o-rest mattress and you will never get cold at night up in the desert. Have not made it yet to the mountains to test it there. Temperatures at night in the desert are getting below 32 F.

Full-on quilt convert after using the Vesper 20F! For three-season, and summer mountaineering, this is my go-to. Lightweight, and easily packable size, plus warmth enough for almost any spring/summer/fall night in the PNW. If it’s a little colder, or I’m at altitude, I use the included attachment straps to fortify my position from any drafts. I love using the quilt vs. mummy bag for the ability to move around and get comfortable. This is my favorite setup for its backpackability and sleepability!

I've used it twice now. It performed very well in mid- to low-30 F temperatures. I'm very happy!
