Recover Smarter, Not Harder: Tailwind’s New Formula
I’ve been using Tailwind Nutrition Recovery Mix after my long runs and workouts, and the new formula is a noticeable upgrade, and I’m impressed. The big change is more protein, 20 grams to be exact, of organic rice + fava + essential amino acids, which really helps muscles bounce back. It also has the right carbs to refill glycogen and electrolytes to replace what I sweat out. And then there’s the taste, honestly, that might be my favorite part. It’s smooth, light, and not chalky at all. It actually feels like a reward after training. For me, this Recovery Mix hits all three and has become an essential part of my post-run routine.
Two steps forward in nutrition; A step backward in taste
I applaud the nutritional changes in the reformulation. Unfortunately, the taste, at least of the salted caramel version, took a step back. Before, it had a distinct salted caramel flavor without being overly sweet. Now it has a sweeter, vaguely caramel flavor. I don't really mind the change in mouthfeel from the new frothiness, but it does make it less convenient if you're shaking in one container and transferring it to another: there's a _lot_ of foam. Overall, I still think it's a top notch recovery product. I just hope that the taste can be tweaked with time to be more like the old recipe.
Disappointed
I am huge Tailwind fan, but this one really missed the mark. I should have listened to the bad reviews, but decided to give it a try. The Strawberry Recovery mix tasted nothing like strawberry. It has a very powdery protein taste. If you are looking for a strong strawberry flavor or something that tastes like a treat, this isn’t it. I will be sticking to the Vanilla, Chocolate and Salted Caramel. Oh well, had to give it a try. Would be great if Tailwind gave a sample of the new flavors in the orders so not to waste money on ordering a few to make the cost of shipping balance out.
A Game-Changer for Recovery!
I’ve been using the Chocolate Recovery Mix after tough runs and workouts, and it’s quickly become a staple for me. I love how versatile it is. I’ll throw it into a smoothie when I want something more filling, or just mix it with almond milk for a quick pick-me-up. The flavor is rich and satisfying without being overly sweet, and the new formulation with added protein really helps me feel like I’m refueling properly. I’ve noticed I wake up the next day feeling less sore and ready to train again, which makes a huge difference in keeping consistent with my workouts. If you’re on the fence, give it a try. Having something that tastes great AND helps with recovery makes it so much easier to stick with a routine.
New Formulation
I had tried the sample pack about a month ago and loved the salted caramel flavor, so when I reordered my electrolytes I also got a pack of salted caramel recovery sticks. I didn't know until I received my order that the recipe had changed to increase protein content, specifically by adding fava bean protein isolate (and removing the coconut milk powder). Unfortunately, this gave the mixed recovery drink a terrible bean-y aftertaste. I wish I had known it was a different mix before I ordered a whole pack, because it's not very pleasant anymore :/
Love the new Recovery Mix flavor and added protein
I have been using Recovery Mix for years. I've had chocolate, vanilla, mint chocolate limited edition, salted caramel,. . . and was curious about the new strawberry flavor. I really like it and added it to my rotation. I usually have one serving at the end of a long run with some good vertical climb. I also like that the protein is now 20 grams. I think that helps feeling better later in the day and the next day since I quite beat myself up in the mountains. I trust what they do and recommend you give is a try.
Delicious and it WORKS
I have to disagree with other reviewers who say the new version doesn’t taste as good as the old. The old version was fine. But the new version is so delicious I look forward to it and am sad once it’s finished 😂. It’s somehow creamy yet light at the same time, has a good mouth feel (not chalky or strange) and doesn’t have a weird after taste. In the old version I could taste a distinct salty element and in the new I don’t get that at all. It tastes like a dessert. Big fan of the vanilla and the new strawberry. Taste aside, this stuff is a game changer for my post long or hard effort recovery. Especially now that I’m a bit older and I don’t feel like I can recover as quickly as I used to… this stuff makes a huge difference for me. In the way I feel hours after, and especially next day (I don’t feel the soreness or depletion, I don’t feel run down). Highly recommend!
Mild but also around midnight Shake
During last weekend’s run, I was trying to get a nap in, talked it over with my coach of taking in protein prior, for added recovery even though 24hrs event. Plan was run 1st 50k then do walk/hike party loops with friends, wearing a pair of Hoka Tecton x3 super shoes to help recover on the run, helped by a friend; and using my pack and poles the hole time to simulate and also help reduce pressure on my legs, knees, ankles for aiding the recovery process. Before trying to lay down I chugged the strawberry recovery shake mixed with water, I don’t know if my pallet was good for sampling at that time, but I tasted more a hint of strawberry 🍓 with more of a milky cover or after taste. I want to try it after a long run for better idea of flavor and also experiment with mixing half strawberry and half chocolate. So far chocolate and vanilla still winning flavors, but I had been wanting a strawberry flavor badly.
New formula misses the mark
The old recovery mix was great. The new one is terrible. The chocolate flavor does not taste good. The mix is foamy. More importantly, it seems like the switch to more protein less carb is driven by a craze for protein. I’m not a scientist or nutritionist, but I worry that the sudden switch is less driven by science, than by fad. Also, the bean protein it’s very gassy.
Favorite recovery mix post long run
I absolutely love the chocolate and strawberry recovery mix flavors the best. Sometimes I can't decide which one I want so I mix them together! My go to post long run shake is a half scoop of each plus soy milk, spinach, flax seed and a banana. Tastes amazing and has all of the important nutrients needed when the body is depleted after putting in the work.
