Great for layering
This has been a great layering piece for variable weather. I’ve worn it in temps ranging from chilly mornings to warmer afternoons, and it performs well in both. It’s comfortable as a base layer in the cold and works as a lightweight outer layer on milder days. I’ve used it for hiking, dog walks, light jogs, running errands, and outdoor sporting events. It layers easily under jackets without feeling bulky and still breathes well when worn on its own. The grey color is versatile and pairs well with most of my wardrobe. On my curvier petite frame, the fit is fairly form-fitting. The thumb holes are a thoughtful feature and help keep sleeves in place when layering. If you prefer a more relaxed fit, I’d recommend sizing up. The fitted cut works well for active use, but it’s something to keep in mind depending on how you plan to wear it.
Good run/hike hoodie
I really liked it on my first run with it. It washed and dried (air dry) well with no pilling. It is not the softest fabric so if you are particular about the feel of fabric, I don't know that this would be for you. I wore it in about 75 degree weather and felt comfortable. TBD how it is in the heat of the summer. I do love that there is a slot in the hood for a ponytail (which was unexpected) and thumb holes, that somehow blend in if you don't want to use them. I'm excited for this shirt in sunnier days to not have to slather my arms with sunscreen.
Wrinkle resistant, dries quickly, light weight
* I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review * I needed a lightweight long sleeve shirt for outdoor activities. I need to protect my freckled arms from further sun damage. I also have long monkey arms for my height (5'4"). I like the sleeves to be at least reaching the top of my hands when I need some extra warmth for my hands. This shirt has the perfect sleeve length for me. It is also only slightly wrinkled out of the bag. I enjoy the material and fit of this shirt. I don't like fitted shirt as I find them trapping too much heat. I wish the shirt is slightly more breathable. I started to feel warm fairly soon with partial sun. I will continue to wear the shirt as it covers well for sun protection. The hood is also big enough for my large head. It stayed on well even during my slow running.
New and Improved Sun Hoodie
I have multiple sun hoodies from REI because they are so great. I wear these on all outdoor adventures from hot sunny days at the lake to cold winter hikes in the mountains. It does really well at keeping me protected from the getting sun burnt but also keeping me cool. The quick dry material also keeps me warm and dry under my outer layers on long hikes. I really like the hood sinch detail. This really comes in handy when its super windy out. And the hood is large enough to go over my hat as well. I also like the straight hem line and color. The only grip I have is that the thumb holes are in line with the sleeve hem and since my arms are short they usually fall out. But other than that this is a great sun hoodie.
This is a great shirt!
I am really enjoying this shirt! The fabric is comfortable to the point of not feeling it! I’ve worn it for a long walk outdoors and on an indoor track. The wicking properties were effective, even with a puffy vest over it outdoors. Since it’s still winter, I can’t rate the sun protection feature, but I plan to wear this shirt sun or no sun!
My new go-to tech hoodie
I broke it in on a big hike in Zion National Park and it performed beautifully. The moisture-wicking kept me dry and comfortable, without that clammy feeling you sometimes get with lesser tech fabrics. The fit is spot-on: not boxy, not clingy, just right, and the fabric feels genuinely soft against the skin, which isn't always a given with performance materials. Since Zion, I've been reaching for it constantly — layered under a shell on chillier days, and thrown on for everyday errands. As a mid-layer it's slim enough to sit under a jacket without bunching, and it adds just enough warmth without overheating. Honestly, no real complaints. If you're looking for a versatile long sleeve that transitions seamlessly from the trail to daily life, this one delivers. The little holes for my thumbs are a happy bonus!
Nice light(er) weight update from the original
I’ve been testing the REI Co-op Women’s Sahara Shade Straight-Hem Hoodie through the Trailblazers program, and overall it’s a solid update to a longtime favorite. The new straight-hem design gives it a cleaner, more modern look compared to the original Sahara Shade Hoodie. That said, having owned easily half a dozen of the kids’ Sahara Shade Hoodies over the years, I did notice the new straight-hem version is essentially the same cut but with the original (arguably) softer material. That said, the material does feel a bit thinner than the previous version and not quite as soft against the skin. It’s not uncomfortable by any means, but if you loved the slightly cozier feel of the original, that’s something to keep in mind. This newer version is very lightweight. It packs down small, making it great for hiking, travel, or tossing in a daypack as a go-to sun layer. The fabric also dries very quickly, which is a huge plus for sweaty hikes or water-adjacent activities. I also appreciated a couple of thoughtful updates. The added panel under each arm allows for better mobility and creates a less clingy, more comfortable fit. Another great upgrade is the vent at the back of the hood, which I have been using to accommodating my ponytail. Overall, this hoodie still delivers where it matters most, for sun protection. It’s a great option if you prioritize lightweight performance, though longtime fans of the original may notice the change in fabric feel.
Great Multi-Functional Mom Shirt!
I thought this was a great lightweight shirt, I wore it on one of those hard to dress for days where its not cold but not warm. It was the perfect shirt for it. It was also a day I went to the museum with my daughter and I appreciated that it was soft and comfortable all day. Very easy to move around it and no concerns about length which I typically get annoyed with. Overall a great shirt especially for moms!
average sun shirt
the feel of this shirt is very similar to other rei brand base layers. soft but not buttery. the sleeves and hood are nice for coverage but the overall length is too short for more athletic movement. i used this shirt when playing pickleball and i found it rising up for overheads and more dynamic movements. otherwise, i think it’d be suited to walking and hiking.
