Great Light Buy It
This is a fantastic lantern. It is small and packable but powerful. The perfect combination for backpacking and your everyday weekend warrior. Helps a ton with food prep and nice to leave on as a beacon for night hiking. Couple this with a headlamp and you have all the light you can ever need in wild.
They forgot Brightness Memory on this 2016 version
I bought this thinking it was the older 2015 version as pictured (silver top). But it’s actually the 2016 model, which Black Diamond accidentally forgot to give one of the key features from the 2015 models: Brightness Memory— it retains the last brightness setting when you turn it off and on. This prevents blinding glare when using dimmer, low-power brightness levels (which is most of the time for many people). Without this it comes back on at full-blast 200 lumen brightness every time, forcing you to hold down the power button to dim it again every time. Extremely annoying when you’re trying to maintain eye-friendly, battery-saving ambient light settings around camp. Besides this major design flaw (which I contacted Black Diamond to confirm), this is a great lantern. But I’d recommend avoiding this 2016 model and finding a leftover 2015 version, or getting the new 2017 model, both of which definitely do have Brightness Memory— a feature you can’t live without once you’ve used it.
Avoid the NRG Recharagables
Nice light. Light, compact, plenty of light for a 4-person tent (or more). The clips on top flip up so it can hand from any loop, or use the 3-leg stand. But...don't waste your money on the NRG battery pack. 1) it doesn't hold the charge for more than a couple of weeks. So you have to make sure to charge it up before you head out, which limits its usefulness for an emergency. 2) Once you plug in the pack, it's a PITA to unplug it. Tiny access, weak plastic "grip," vulnerable wires. 3) To use the NRG pack, you have to remove the 4-AA holder. So keep track of where you put it. 4) The NRG pack has only three batteries to it. I didn't do a test, but it likely lasts of 75% of the time as using the four AAs (assuming it's fully charged to begin with - see 1 above)
Good lantern until it quit
I bought this lantern thinking it would be rechargable. It is, but only with a battery kit no longer available anywhere. I bought rechargeable batteries in an attemp to circumvent the issue, but the car charger plug was too much voltage for the circuit board in the light ( the plug fit) and it blew. There is likely no cost effective way for this product to be repaired. So I wasted money on this purchase. I don’t recommend buying this light due to this issue unless you only use non rechargeble “AA” batteries
bright camp light
this is a great camp lite to hang or sit on a camp table. I bought it because a friend brought theirs along and it was really great for working at the camp at night. Along with solar lamps this is great. It is not super light for backpackers, but worth it if you carry it.
Bright and compact
Love how small it folds up to(about the size of a 12 oz can). It puts out a ton of light for the small size. Staple of my backpacking trips now.
just what I needed
Used this a few times already. Needed a lantern for games at the picnic table at night. Got this at a discount. Very satisfied.
Great backpacking lantern
I bought this primarily for backpacking, but it works great for car camping as well. The little guy puts off a surprising amount of light and seems to sip battery juice. Well, it doesn't run on edgy reviews, but it does seem to very efficient to me. It even survived being submerged (fresh water) in my Kayak. Got it home, took out the batteries, and took the dome apart to let it dry. Fired right up the next day. No corrosion inside at all.
Battery sucker, short lifespan
This is the second Apollo lantern I've purchased and they both drained batteries in under a few hours of use, only to completely stop working after a few months of sporadic use. I definitely wouldn't recommend this lantern, as it quits right when you need it.
Seems like a good light
We just bought it. Have not yet taken it camping. We'll be out all summer with it and will report in the fall. In the meanwhile, the instructions were unclear but we figured it out nonetheless. At present, the lamp casts a strong and adjustable light but wail til we field test it.
