So, i bought these sticks right before backpacking and like a knucklehead, did not tighten down the tensioning screws on the clamps. I had a great scare when I went to step down off a boulder onto a narrow trail with a cliff on the far side. The sticks failed to bear weight big time and I almost took a tumble. However, after I tightened down the tensioning screws the trekking poles more than did their job and i also used them to hold up my lean to tarp shelter for almost a week. Totally my fault they failed to perform, i definitely should have checked over new gear before depending on it.
I've had these for many years now. They aren't the lightest. They aren't the coolest. But they sure do last. I've taking these mountaineering, snowshoeing, trekking across 23 countries in Europe, and used them hold up tents, gear, etc... And they won't break. And no matter what kind of pole you get, make sure you get the external lever lock, not the internal twist kind. You'll be ready to go in cold weather, while your friend spends 30 minutes trying to get his pole extended with freezing hands. ;)
Bought these in Roanoke in March. Loved them at first. Total convert to trekking poles at 62. But the next time I used them on a trail in New York, the upper section of one telescoped with just moderate weight on it during a descent. I'm on a road trip with my daughter for 10 days, no way to send them any place. Will try to "fatten" the offending section with electrical or duct tape, but if the "Flicklock" is failing at its designed diameter, it seems unlikely that it will hold for long at a wider one. Makes me question the whole design. Maybe notches every inch or so would make for a more secure retention system. Usually a big fan of Black Diamond.
I was looking for a nice pair of trekking poles that were lightweight and these seem to get the job done, quite frankly they saved my life when walking at a complete angle on tricky terrain. These are the first pair I have ever purchased so I don't have anything to compare them to, but I would definitely recommend these to a friend! I like that they retract inside themselves and get pretty small, they fit perfectly on the outside of my pack and aren't too bulky nor get in the way when backpacking.
I have never used trekking poles before while hiking, thus I have no experience to compare them with. All I have is what I know. I took these poles on my Uncompahgre Peak (14,309') climb, and they were great. I tell you, I don't want to hike hard hikes without poles again. I really like the color and thickness of the poles and handles, you can tell they are good quality. They stabilized me from countless slips and falls, and were a great comfort of stability in the fast high altitude wind. I wouldn't have noticed this, but my father pointed out how large the clasps are, It doesn't bother me, but in comparison to his screw tight clasps on his poles, they were rather bulky. Also, he pointed out to me that there was no spring/shock absorption within the pole. Again, this didn't bother me, but his poles (lesser quality) had that too. Overall I really liked them, and will never go back.
I just bought this as a replacement for an older REI pole. It feels very secure and comfortable in hand. I do wish it came with tip protectors, but they can be bought extra. I had back surgery in 2011 and now have nerve damage in my left left and right thigh. I was told to use a walker the rest of my life, but I use a Trekking pole instead. This one is perfect. It is also very nice looking.
Bought these in advance of a 2 month 10,000 mile roadtrip on which I hiked over 400 miles. I hike very aggressively, and these poles would always be on my pack when I was doing a hike with over 3,000 feet of elevation gain. If you plan on hiking back to back days, use poles! It's amazing how fast you can power through uphills and still feel like your legs have some juice left. Reviewers complaining about the mechanism locking the poles out clearly do not know how to use them correctly - carry a multi-tool so that you can tighten the mechanisms. On purchase mine slowly got shorter as I hiked but after tightening down the mechanisms I've had no issues. Used these on a 12 mile one way hike up Pikes Peak (~7,500' of gain) and did not need to adjust them once. I've now put hundreds of miles on these as my first poles and they are still working great. I've used them on everything from well defined trails to steep scree to huge snowpack (use your snow baskets!).
This are great. They didn't collapse on me at all. We did a 5 hour hike up a volcano in St. Kitts and I was able to put my full weight on them. They worked great and were easy to hold onto. They are light and fit in my suitcase and I was able to hook them on my backpack.
I had always assumed trekking poles were an unnecessary and clumsy affectation. However, I was recently diagnosed with arthritis in my left knee and was finding it almost impossible to hike any distance. Walking downhill was particularly difficult. This was very frustrating for an avid hiker, so I decided to make the investment in some starter poles. The Black Diamond poles provided immediate relief and increased my stability. They are very solid construction and are easy to adjust. The handles are very comfortable. The rubberized area below the handle allows me to shorten up the poles for short uphill stretches. The price point (on sale) was very reasonable.
it is really decent as a first trekking pole if you plan you go hardcore in hiking i recommend as carbon hiking pole
