Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice as a light travel pack I bought this to use on a 10 day trip to Europe as a tourist travel pack. I used it for day trips in November so my wife and I could carry rain gear and extra jackets, water bottles, guide books, etc... The pack is very light, but held up well. It is easy and quick to access the main compartment and the slot compartment inside next to the back was nice for papers. There is a side zipper for access to a compartment on the back that worked well for guidebooks. The only issue I had was with the water bottle pockets on the sides. These were fine as long as the pack is upright, but our water bottles fell out often if the pack was laid down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect size and weight I've had the Flash 18 pack for a number of years, and I love it, but had this nagging desire for a just a bit more room and kept eyeing my climbing partner's Flash 22 Pack. I missed the side bottle pockets, and the accessibility of an outside zipper. I recently bought a mid-range camera and putting the camera bag with two separate lens cases into the mouth of the Flash 18 was a little tight, so decided to give in and check out the Flash 22. The mouth of the pack is just that much wider to make putting my camera bag in that much easier, with plenty of room for layers, snacks, and other necessities. I love the Strata Print Vin Rouge - nice teal contrast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Climbing Pack I purchased this pack as a lightweight way to carry my basic climbing gear and it excels in that purpose. I am able to fit my harness, chalk bag, water bottle, and size 13 climbing shoes in it with plenty of room left over to put in a puffy jacket or a lunch. I don't carry a helmet or rope often because about 95% of my climbing is gym climbing but I have no doubts that you could fit a helmet under the lid of this pack or that you could also carry rope on top of your gear if you coil it properly. I love how light it is and I think it's honestly worth the $10 more to get this pack over the Flash 18 if only for the addition of the water bottle pockets.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from One and Done. The *first* Flash 22 I got was returned due to a defective drawstring closure (painless experience, thank you REI!!) The *second* one I decided to take on a day trip to Camel's Hump in Vermont. Unfortunately, the Flash 22 did not fair well.. 1) Both side pockets had 2" diameter holes in them. 2) The shoulder straps had started tearing away from anchor stitching at multiple points 3) The fabric on the back panel tore I had a base weight of maybe 3lbs and a filled 2L Platypus reservoir, certainly shouldn't have been worried about overloading a pack of this size. All in all, the design is really great but the construction and materials used leave much to be desired.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Jam packed with great features This is actually the second one I've purchased. My daughter saw it and wanted one too. It is very nicely made, is light-weight, and has tons of features to like. There is a zippered top pocket in the lid that is handy. There are elastic side pockets for water bottles or whatever, when not using a bladder, and a good inside bladder pocket as well. It has a mesh back to provide some sweat separation from the bag, mesh shoulder straps, a sternum strap with built-in whistle, and a waist strap to keep it close to your body when needed. Inside there are a couple pockets, great for a wallet, and a red strap to hang your car keys on, so they don't disappear to the bottom of the bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little pack I bought this pack to use for short hikes or outings. I am very pleased by its simple but efficient use of space. This is my second flash 22 I have bought and this newer one has great little features that continues to put it in a league of its own. The external storage pouch on the front of the pack is a very welcome addition along with the storage in the lid. Internally it features two non-zippered pouches that were convenient for storing a few personal items I didn't want in the general storage area. The outside pockets are large and easily hold water bottles of varying sizes. This bag can not be beat at its price point. Lightweight, simple, ample storage and organization.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from wanted to love it I really want to love this pack. My search was to find something that would serve as a back pack that was large enough to carry overnight clothing and toiletries in case my wheelie bag got lost, but was small enough to be my day pack in towns. This pack was perfect for all of that, and it sat very well on my back, but I find the shoulder straps to be very uncomfortable - the edging cuts into my neck and shoulders. I've loaded it with 3-10 pounds, and of course, the heavier it gets, the more uncomfortable it gets. As much as I love everything else about the bag (light, nice looking, packs well, simple), the shoulder strap discomfort is a deal breaker for me. Too bad, all else was so good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice day pack I have had this pack for a couple of years, use it daily for my commute to work and weekend hikes. It holds what I need it too, lightweight, and simple. Not a ton of bells and whistles but more spots to clip gear to than you may expect from a smaller pack. One of the shoulder straps is starting to tear where it meets the pack and the actual pack is very flexible, which can be frustrating if you set it on something then try to dig through it, it doesn't hold itself upright at all. I got this for 50% off during a holiday deal, I don't think I'd tell folks to pay $50 for it.

Questions & Answers

Hello.  Does this have a sit pad similar to the Flash18 and if so, how is it removed from the bag?  thank you.

Asked by: Megs25
While not an official "sit pad", there is a similar (though thicker) foam pad which is designed for padding the pack against your back. It comes out the same way that it did in the Flash 18.. and should you choose to do so, can sit on it. :)

What happened to the daisy chains (1 on each side of the front) that were on previous versions of the Flash 22? Do you have plans to add the daisy chains back? They're more useful than 3 zip pockets (keep the top lid and inside zip pockets). Thanks

Asked by: bbkchr
The daisy chain was removed from the most recent edition of this pack. As of July 2017, we are aware of any upcoming changes to the current design.

since most airlines have cheaper fares that charge extra for carry on bags...does this qualify to fit under seats on airlines?

Asked by: lagunatuna
Just took mine as on a Frontier flight as a "personal item" - was perfect size and did not cost any extra fees.

Does this pack fold up easily? Does it fold into itself?

Asked by: aubreygiese
This pack can easily be folded for storage. The pack does not fold in on itself or stow in it's own pocket.

Some of the reviews complain that water bottles fall out of the side pockets when the pack is not upright. Is that still true, or have later models added loops to clip water bottles into?

Asked by: Scott
The size pockets are designed for water bottles; performance and security may vary depending on the size of the bottle. Clips/loops have not been added for security.
