The least effective product I have ever purchased
The Osprey Airporter fails at everything it is made to do. It is made to minimize straps, but there is no way to pack its one strap into the bag securely. The strap is far too long, even when adjusted to its shortest length, so there is no comfortable way to shoulder the bag. The clip on the strap is too weak and mine would make a creaking sound with every step I took. The handle on the side is far too narrow for the size of the bag and is not padded, so it dug into my hand when I carried it. The zippers are low quality and kept jamming for me when it was brand new. Thanks to REI's lenient return policy, I no longer own this product.
Clutch!
This is one of those items where you are glad to have it and will be upset if you don't.... just know that they do run large. I preferred that however because when I travel, I somehow always bring back more than what I came with. Not only does this protect my Osprey 65L, but I can also store any extra items, lock it, and check it in! Maybe not the best method for everyone, but it works for me. 4 stars because the strap does suck, however I either throw it on the airplort carts or take it out, fold it up, put it in my pack and off I go! Overall my wife and I are happy with these.
Airport proof protection
I travel very often overseas and have found myself with damage to my backpack thanks to careless airlines. I bought this bag size large to put my backpack inside when I check my bag. First the large is indeed very large and easily fits my Gregory Denali Pro xtra large pack. The bag folds down into its own built in pocket and can easily be stored in you luggage when not needed. Bag has one shoulder strap but is NOT removable so I would think this is the only negative. Color is not so flashy and not screaming “ Hey look expensive luggage to steal” and I like that. Zipper is strong and so far has held up great. Looks to have some water proof treatment although I have yet to test it in the rain. Overall I’m very happy and feel better having lowered the chance to have my needed backpack damaged.
Great concept, but tore on first flight
Perfect size to haul a ton of baby gear (baby hiking carrier, pack n play, etc. however this item tears easily, on a direct flight from AZ to CO United Airlines tore three holes in the bag, None of our other bags were damaged. Frequent flyer with no baggage issues except this pack. Osprey, make this stronger and stop cheaping out — your quality has declined over the years.
Mixed opinions
I have mixed opinions on this product. I took it on one trip, using it to protect my large gregory backpack. It did the trick, in the fact that it got my bag to my destination and back protected. But, after just two flights (there and back), the Osprey Airporter bag had sustained two giant rips. Thus, I returned it.
Returned it
I have a 70L Osprey pack, and the size L of this duffel was way too big. It was like carrying my pack in an over-sized trash bag. The padded strap seemed like a good thing, but didn't matter since I only had my pack in here when it was checked at the airline. Others in my family got the REI Co-op Pack Duffel which performed much better, was easier to carry, had tougher-looking zippers, and fit an 80L pack very nicely. I returned this Osprey duffel for another REI (which was lower cost anyway).
1st trip, both Duffel and Backpack torn by UA.
Bought Women's Gregory Deva 80 backpack and this Duffel for 14 day trip in the Washington Cascades. Trip from Newark to Seattle resulted in torn duffel and top of the pack. Submitted claim to United Airlines and so far they offered to replace the Osprey duffel. I reminded them that the backpack was also torn in my response. I expect they'll replace both, but frankly I bought this $50 duffel to prevent damage to the pack in the first place. Waste of money, imo. (Tried to add photos and could not for some reason.)
WISH I HAD THIS 20 YEARS AGO!
i dont own a single piece of luggage. have been backpacking for 31 years and fly with my rucksacks monthly. this is an essential piece of equipment. your straps and buckles are protected from machinery and it deters theft. thanks osprey!
It’s a cover, not a backpack
I read multiple reviews where people were upset that this duffle did not function well as a backpack. Duh - it’s not a backpack. As another reviewer noted, the purpose of this bag is to transport your backpack when checking it, not replace your backpack. It *is* a lighter material which, of course, it has to be in order to fold up into the pouch. The strap now stows away in the current (2018) design. We purchased this bag for the same reason another reviewer did - to cover our car seat when checking. We had previously purchased the covers with “wheels” (that don’t actually work anyway) made for car seats and after them being trashed on one trip, decided to choose something more likely to survive TSA that could “live on” to cover our backpacks in the future. We had hoped the REI XXL duffle would work (we already own it) but because it opens as a traditional zippered duffle, the dimension could not accommodate the wider bottom of our tall Recaro car seat (it fits perfectly BTW). The other thing to keep in mind is this bag is $50 (not $150) which is reasonable for what you are getting in return compared to other options.
excellent protection
Nice job on the airline pack cover. Would like to see a TSA lock option.
