Great Active Jacket
I bought this jacket for running and it is by far the best jacket I have owned for this activity. My other water proof jackets were always ovens in cool to cold weather. This jacket breathes very well, while still doing a great job of blocking wind and rain. The fit is perfect for an active jacket with not much extra fabric to get in the way. It probably looks a little small to wear around the town (so buy a size up if you want it for this), but when used for running the fit is very good.
Great Jacket - Small Size - Small Media Pocket
I really like this jacket, without a doubt the best running Jacket I have ever owned. It weighs nothing and blocks the wind like a sheet of armour, all while letting your body breath when it heats up. I normally wear a large in Arc'teryx gear and so when I was in the market for a new running Jacket I ordered a large. I was not so lucky, I had to send it back and get an XL. The XL fit pretty good other than it was a little long. My other complaint is the size of the media pocket on the inside of the jacket. It was just too small for my phone with the headphones plugged in (iPhone 6). If it was just a small bit larger it would have been perfect.
Ultra Light Bomber Jacket
Having the right stuff when I you go deep into the mountains is crucial. It can't be so lightweight that it is fragile nor to heavy duty and bulky. I have the Norvan SL which is great for trail running and keeps the wet out but feels delicate. The Norvan is the perfect medium. Still perfect to move fast and light while being super packable and breathes like a champ. On the flip side it also stands up to scrapes and feels sturdy. Throw a lightweight merino sweater in my pack and I have confidence that I can withstand anything the alpine zone throws at me.
Excellent, would be better with two improvements.
I love this jacket, it is lightweight, packs away in its hood and has stood up well to torrential downpours. Despite its price and, after initial reservations, I am pleased with my purchase. Nothing, however, is perfect - the cuffs in heavy rain become wet and retain the moisture, the inside cuffs (first inch) become wet and are a tad uncomfortable. It is a minor complaint and in future designs it would be easy to rectify. Second minor point - If using this jacket for walking rather than running, I use it for both, a slightly bigger inside pocket would be great to accomodate an Iphone plus. Two minor points aside, this is an excellent jacket.
Excellent running jacket
I've used this jacket recently for several runs (5 - 10 miles) in heavy rain and I've found it be excellent. Rain runs straight off and it is comfortable and breathable. The hood works well for me with no problems with visibility or wind causing it to move around. I can't speak for long term durability but it does have a solid feel and, as I often run with a backpack, I can say that it is standing up to daily abrasion with no problem. If I was being picky I would have liked a couple more internal pockets for keys and suchlike, but this is the best premium running jacket I've come across for adverse weather.
Best high output jacket period
I usually don’t write review but my most recent experience with this product was so amazing I had to write a review. I participated in the 2018 Boston Marathon and the weather was historically awful with heavy rain, strong head winds and only 35-40 F. At times it literally felt like running in the shower. Initially I planned to take off the jacket after a while thinking I would get too hot during the Marathon but this never happened. I am so impressed at the performance of this jacket and would recommend it to everyone. This jacket is completely waterproof but let’s you breathe extremely well. It kept me warm without overheating. Thank you Arcteryx !! You are the BEST.
My new favorite rain shell for backpacking!
I love my Norvan. It is intended for trail running, but I have found that it works exceptionally well for backpacking. Since it was designed for trail running, it is cut slim (great for us skinny folk) and it breathes really well. I have also found it to be very waterproof. The pit openings don’t have zips (you can’t close them), which I thought would be an issue. Turns out, they work great. Never had a problem with water getting in and they allow my pits to breath. I have a medium in the blue color (I think they only have black and red now) and it weighs in right at 7.1 ounces. I pair mine up with a Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer, but a Cerium SL would also work great.
Great Jacket
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This jacket works well keeps rain and wind out. Has a good fit. I run hot so there can be a build up condensation inside. The main problem with the design is the hood. It is missing bungee cord to cinch the hood to your head in windy conditions, to stop the hood flapping about or blowing off. I think Arc'teryx have left this off to reduce overall weight. To get around this problem you have to wear a baseball cap underneath the hood.
Performance Waterproof Jacket perfect for running
Got to brag about my new Arc'teryx Norvan Jacket. Ran 15 miles in 36 degrees, steady rain, and wind this morning and the jacket performed amazing! Fully waterproof thanks to a 3 layer Gore Tex fabric and Gore C-Knit backer. Kept me dry and comfortable. It also breathes very well thanks to vents under the arm. So light at 7 ounces. It’s expensive but well worth it! Great inside chest pocket for storage. Great slim fit that isn’t restricting at all. I’m 5’9” and 130 and a small fits me well. This jacket can handle it all weather wise. Wish I had it at the Boston Marathon last year.
Not ideal for running.
I bought this for running in the winter months in New England. The inside pocket is both small and useless as you would never want anything of significant weight or size pressed tight so high on your chest. The rubber band at the bottom is too tight and it causes the jacket to slowly climb your torso as you run. My humble recommendation? You need a single central pocket in the rear, almost like a cycling jersey, with waterproof zipper. An alternative would be two zippered pockets on each side, but facing the rear as most running gear does. You need to relax that rubber band and make it more like a ski "skirt", whereby the jacket falls flat but you have something inside to prevent wind from slipping up.
