Rated 2 out of 5 by from Ok but not fit for long tours I used these panniers for some commuting as well as a tour from minneapolis to montreal. Unfortunately, I don't think I will use these again. They were wonderful at first. They have a good design with the material and roll top. Where they fail is the mounting system. The first day of my tour one clip busted and I had to go the rest of my tour with one pannier zip tied. Also the bottom clips do not work well. I bought these as products that I could count on, not as a product I can't trust. I found them to fail quite a bit, especially near the end of my journey. These panniers do have some very good parts but these parts are ruined by some poor design decisions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bomb-proof bags I've used these bags for commuting 3-4 days a week year 'round and had them on a couple of week long bike tours. I haul between 15-20 lbs of computer, lunch and clothes 15 miles each way. The bags are basic, not a lot of exterior pockets or straps, but they are bomb-proof. I've actually topped the bag one time while riding through a flooded area, and had them partially submerged more than once. everything has always come out dry. They are a bit on the heavy side. They're not cheap, but the only thing that broke was a bracket for the rail and I went to my LBS and got it replaced in 3 days for free.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not durable I had the same model for almost 5 years (purchased in 2012) before replacing them, and since the manufacturer's warranty is solid, I decided to buy the same thing. Functionality is great, but a week after purchasing these, I hit a big pothole and the arm that connects the bike clamp to the bag exploded. They have replacement parts, but I decided to return the bag and order something else. There is no way the clamp arm should break that easily. The materials are definitely different than they were 5 years ago (that bag was nearly bullet proof). Too bad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome bags I have used these bags for two backcountry bike-packing trips and they have performed very well. Both trips required water crossings and significant rough trail stretches and all of my gear remained dry and protected. I think the key to prevent some of the issues other reviewers have encountered is to make sure all of the adjustments are made so that the bags fit onto your bike rack snugly. My setup also had a bear resistant food container strapped to the top of the rack, which may have helped keep the bags from rattling on the rail of the rack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome, but one issue... I got these almost a year ago and have been using them daily: commuting 20 miles a day with lunch and an extra pair of clothes, grocery shopping and general errands around town, bike touring along the California coast and Bay Area. All in all, I've ridden about 6,000+ miles with these on 3 different bikes and 3 different bike racks. The Good: Waterproof panniers are awesome, and even being drenched by this year's El Nino and consistent fog along the coast they have not once allowed anything to get wet. They really do mount on just about any rack. They stay mounted during my entire commute and errand runs, even with the occasional pot hole and curb/sidewalk. Storage capacity is great. The roll top closure allows for big loads and small loads to be packed tightly thus minimizing the bulk of the bags when in either loading case. They pack into themselves, making it easier to leave home empty without the bags flopping around. The Bad: The stiffener plate/board on the back side of the bag has not fared too well for me. The one I use most frequently is starting to deform and lose its shape. This results in the bag no longer being flush with the rack and corresponding shifting of the contents. (NOTE: this can likely be avoided by limiting the weight in each bag to about 10 lbs and centering heavier items, based on my experience) Not very good for off-road/gravel touring as the blade on the bottom will often pop out or come loose when hitting some particularly big bumps; this forces you to stop and reattach. This is very reasonable given the bags are designed to be quick release! Overall I love these things, they are perfect for medium loads on smooth roads. I will be switching them out soon due to the back stiffener issue mentioned above.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from interior pocket seam failed The stitching on the bottom seam of the interior pocket came loose after a few months of use and eventually the pocket separated completely. Otherwise works well. REI replaced the panniers, but it was kind of a hassle because the store didn't stock my color and I had to buy a new pair online and then return the defective ones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Roomy, Robust Ortlieb bags have a great reputation so when I needed a set for a bike camping trip they were a natural choice. Certainly on the high end of the cost spectrum but worth it if you're going to use repeatedly over a long span of time. They mate into my rack very nicely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Panniers! I recently purchased a set of Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic Panniers for my new bike rack. My old panniers were too small for this rack, and I needed something longer to hook up well. The rolling design on the back of the pannier (see photo) allows you to hook up onto a rack in multiple spots, so even if your rack is smaller, you can still use these. The rack are roomy and water proof; the price is fair as well (when did panniers get sooooo expensive?). I highly recommend this product!

I have had two pair of Ortlieb rear panniers. In each case, the part that breaks down is the plastic closure "buckle" attached to the top and sides of the bag straps. The teeth break off and then it won't close. Any replacement parts?

Asked by: Nia W
Unfortunately, we do not carry any replacement parts for these panniers. You might try contacting Ortlieb directly.

What is the width of these bags along the bottom? I ask because my rear rack is all the way back and my heels almost hit my current bags because I have large shoes. The other dimensions would be helpful also to compare with my current old panniers.

Asked by: bikevet
The Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic Panniers have the following single bag measurements: 16.5" height x 12.6" width x 6.7" depth.

Will this bag secure to an Old Man Mountain Sherpa Rear for 700c With Mechanical Disc Brakes (Eyelet-Mounted)?

Asked by: LostCoast27
This bag will secure to the top of your rack, however, the C-clips may not secure to the rack because of the disc brakes. We recommend you contact your rack manufacturer for further clarification.

Do you have to buy a rack with these so that you can mount them on a bike? If a rack isn't included, which rack's are compatible? Thanks!

Asked by: GH27
You will need a rack for these. Which ones really depends on what you will be carrying, and what bike you have, but generally any rear rack with a horizontal bar on top will work. I have mine on a Surly "nice" rear rack and have used them for long tours with no problems. Personally I would recommend a Surly or Tubus rack, but there are others which will work. REI actually has a good article on choosing racks and bags which might help. https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bike-bags-racks.html
