Good *Kite* but prepare and expect to spend more.
TL;DR 4 stars as I don't want people to think it's a bad kite (it flies very well), but do be aware of the limitations of the stock line. The main body of this kite works well, holds up to abuse as promised, and delivers a rewarding and immersive flying experience in the right winds. The included and attached lines, however, are of atrocious quality. A stretchy core surrounded by an inflexible sheath makes up each line, and while I'm sure the line delivers on the promise of being "easier to learn on," due to the friction between the layers my line snapped on the second flight out. Expect to spend an additional $20+ on a new, higher quality line.
Flying a kite makes everything else melt away.
New to kite flying, I was nervous to use a two hand kite at the beach. This past weekend at Huntington State Park in South Carolina I had my first chance to use my Synapse. My son held the kite while I unrolled the line and put on the wrist straps. He threw the kite into the air and it immediately climbed to its maximum height. Subtle movement of each hand make the kite go right and left. It stayed aloft for over twenty minutes and only came down because I got cocky and tried to do a loop. I fly it 3 or 4 more times and each time learned more about controlling and steering it. Very fun....everything else went out of my mind as I concentrated on making the kite dance in the wind. Very relaxing.
Great fun!
This was one of my best impulse purchases ever. A lot of fun and super easy setup. With no stays or fiberglass rods the setup for this kite is just unfolding it and unwinding the lines from the included line winder. It's also pretty durable because even if you dive it into the ground there's nothing to break. The only concern is the lines getting tangled or damaged or the foil getting torn which is you fly away from trees and rocks is a non-issue. The kite is a lot of fun to fly but really works optimally in 10-15 MPH winds. It does pull pretty hard in 15-25 MPH winds so be aware and get into a good stance. When you're done just use the line winder to wrap up the lines fold the kite, and put it in the sack.
So Happy - Great Design
I am so happy with my Synapse Prism kite! I took it to the beach at Hilton Head Island and it took off right away, after a few moments to figure things out. By the end of the first day out I was comfortable doing tricks. By the last day of the trip I was comfortable dancing with the kite! The design of the kite is very thorough: color coding the two lines, easy to clean the sand out and hang dry with the provided clip, flies when wet, the carrying bag is sturdy enough to hold sand or a heavy water bottle (to hold down the kite and keep the kite from flying away) and has the capability to add a tail. During one of my outings I saw another person with a Prism kite and they were having just as much fun. I took a couple other kites with me and only wanted to use this one! I considered less expensive kites from Amazon, but did not want to risk not having a proper kite for the trip. I trusted REI's choice and am grateful.
great little parafoil, needs strong winds
needs pretty strong winds for it to be fun. it wont really fly at 5 mph, it needs 7 or 8 at least. ideal for beach. and super duper fun if you attach a tail! the longer the better (75+ ft)!
Great Kite to get into Sport Kiting
This is a really great and affordable sport kite to get into kite flying. I've never had any experience flying kites and got this on a whim on a nice, windy day in San Diego. It took me a while to get the hang of flying this 2 stringed kite, but once I did it was definitely a fun and enjoyable experience. The quality is excellent and I look forward to flying this kite more on my free time.
Well made and lots of fun!
Works really well and seems well made. Took it out on a windy day at the beach and the kids really enjoyed it. Took about a 15-minute learning curve and a little hard to get off the ground, but figure it out pretty quickly.
Insanely Fun Trick Kite
Took this kite to the coast last week. It is very maneuverable and less touchy than I was expecting. The wrist grips are comfortable and I really like how since there's no fiberglass framing, I was less worried about crashing it into the sand because there's nothing to snap. The airfoil style is really cool as it actually "inflates" as the wind whips through it. The instruction manual was detailed and helpful too, even showing some simple tricks and how to do some simple repair knots in the line if need be.
Good beginner kite
This has been a fun kite but the included lines will not handle the max. wind rating of the kite. I was flying the kite with my son in 15mph winds and broke the line 2 different times. Other than the weak line issue it's a fun kite to fly and usually gets people coming up to me at the park asking where to get one. If you are familiar with 2 line kites I'd probably skip this one and get the bigger 170 version for more power.
Can take a beating!
I’ve only had the opportunity to fly this kite twice. First flight didn’t last long as it wasn’t windy enough, this kite needs constant wind blowing or it won’t stay in the air. Second time flying was a blast! This time it was windy. This kite is so easy to handle I let my kids fly it, ages 7,9,12,13. At first my kids crashed A LOT trying to learn, once they got the hang of it, it was nothing but fun. There were a few instances where my kids crashed the kite and recovered from the ground by pulling or stepping backwards. Which leads to my only concern about this kite. The kite itself is made of parachute type material, but stiffer. If the kite gets dragged over sticks or rocks it may get snagged and rip. In reality that’s more user error vs. the kite itself.
