Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect School Bag! I am a rising Junior in High School. I had an older version of the Recon before purchasing this one, and it was so great my older brother who is a Senior in College stole it! Before purchasing it I wanted to know how many thing it could fit, so for you high schoolers out there : the recon fits 2 one inch binders, 5 one subject notebooks, 1 three subject notebook, and 6 folders in JUST the main pocket. In the organizational pocket, I carry my agenda, calculator and pencil case, as well as a few doo-dads for school. I love this bag and recommend it to any student!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome I had a North Face Backpack all throughout High School and I could honestly still be using it for College. Now you might be asking "well if you could still be using it why buy another one?" well curious reader, I thought it would be appropriate to get a more "usable" color. My old backpack is brown, pink and purple while my new sophisticated backpack is all black and I think its the best decision I've made all year. This backpack has TONS of space, more than I could ever imagine. It feels even more durable than my old one which is so nice. I would recommend this backpack for anyone, school related or not, it's worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this backpack!! I received this backpack for my birthday of my freshman year of college and I absolutely love it! The laptop pocket securely holds my 13" MacBook Pro and there are tons of other pockets for everything I take to campus daily. The water bottle pockets are great and easily hold a 32oz Nalgene bottle. At first I didn't notice but there is a slit in the back near the bottom so I often tuck the waist straps in there to keep them out of the way. This is such a comfortable backpack and definitely the most common on IU's campus. Although it is very popular, there are so many new colors that come out so frequently that I rarely notice anyone with my exact style! By far one of The Northface's best products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for long hikes to class... I can't hike at all, but I do have to walk (or run) across my huge college campus carrying my heavy books, laptop, etcetera. With the Surge backpack I have the best possible weight distribution and tons of extra space, with so many pockets and pouches that everything has its own tidy compartment. The lining is very protective and soft for electronics, which is a great bonus. The pack even looks very stylish and the materials are super durable (more so than previous models, even). This bag will last easily three times as long as my last bags, which have literally torn apart, so the price is way worth it. Your back will thank you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love the improvements! I took this through France, Italy, and Greece. It got dirty and when I got home, it cleaned up beautifully! It has a nice fit, is easy to adjust, and has decent organization. The big negative for me is that it falls over forward when you set it down. Otherwise I would give it 5 stars! I love the front sleeve that held not only my Kindle, but also my iPad 2 (old school!). This is the pocket in the front organization pocket. There's also the laptop pocket, but I used it for separating out paperwork. One other negative is the depth of the water bottle pockets. You need to carbiner clip it in if you use a 24 oz. or larger bottle (mine was a Klean Kanteen). I did get a lot of compliments on it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sweet pack I own a Surge and love this bag, I mainly use it for weekend trips because there's so much space and pockets to hold all my belongings. However, I got the Recon because I need a pack to go to and from work. Its perfect. I can stick all my folders, laptop, tablet and there's room for more! Great job TNF on the new straps, I feel I have a ton more movement and love the bigger front pocket to stow my sunglasses and phone. I also like the bigger side pocket, I can actually put my water bottle in it! Thanks TNF!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth It I hate spending a lot of money on things that you think a "cheap" version would do but after going through 5 backpacks in 2 years I gave this one a try. I absolutely love this backpack. From the moment you take it out of the box you can tell a difference in quality. It feels heavier than most of my previous back packs but I can see, feel, and am confident that my laptop is much safer in this bag. The very front small pocket is great and all the compartments inside the middle pocket keep me organized. Straps are comfortable and I love the colors! Definitely worth the money spent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Investment of my College Career I purchased this backpack in the beginning of my second semester of college and I feel as though it has made a world of difference in my college experience. Okay, I may be exaggerating, but as someone who can almost exclusively enjoy something only if it is organized, this backpack has helped me enjoy school so much more. It's durable enough to carry my 15 hour load on my back without any seams ripping or zippers breaking and it's variety of pockets make it easy to carry my wallet, post it notes, keys, pens, etc. I no longer carry a purse! This backpack was a wonderful investment, truly worth more to me than I think North Face would ever charge for it.

What is the difference between the North Face Surge and the North Face Recon backpacks for school books and laptops?  I'm familiar with the Recon, but the Surge appears to be new and a bit more pricey. What extra features do U get with Surge for $?

Asked by: Texas zman
I purchased both, but decided to go with the Surge as it has a dedicated laptop compartment that lies flat for airport security. I'm pretty lazy and with the Recon, you still have to take your laptop out of the bag.

Will this fit a 15.6 inch hp spectre x 360?

Asked by: K8ebabe
The laptop sleeve fits up to a 15" laptop and measures 10.5" x 13.25". We recommend comparing your laptop dimensions to the sleeve dimensions to determine if it will fit.
