Trail 25 Evaluation 5 Months In

After 5 months of weekly use by a day hiker, this pack looks and feels like new. It easily holds a rain jacket and light weight insulated shell, headlight, compass, emergency equipment and my lunch with room for a wool hat and gloves now that the cold weather has arrived. There are convenient pockets for phone or keys, a setup for a water reservoir and it comes with a rain cover. It is light weight and comfortable to wear and Ialso has a loop at the top to carry the pack when not wearing it. I'm sure there are more expensive and feature filled day packs out there, but for value to price it's hard to see how the Trail 25 can be beat.

Great design. Poor hardware.

I have this bag in all black. The design seems well thought out. The bag looks great, too. I'm giving this bag 2 stars for one simple reason. The quality of zipper chosen is absolutely horrible. Why is this such a big deal, you ask? Because the zipper is, BY FAR, the most used function of this bag.... of any bag! It's a cheap zipper -- in terms of quality, it feels like it came off a Slurpee promotional fanny pack. The zipper sticks, and I have zero confidence in it's ability to hold up to any sort of daily abuse. So, yes, the bag is pretty great in terms of design -- but this horrible zipper is a deal breaker, and I can only give it 2 stars because of that simple (yet, very important) oversight in quality.

Versatile travel workhorse

I bought this bag to use for a 2.5 week trip in Europe this past summer, and continue to use it on a daily basis for a 25 mile RT bike commute. The pack is small enough to fit on any discount airline without incurring additional charges, but large enough for me to use every day with my laptop, clothes and food for the bike to work. The raincover is pretty slick, and appears to be marginally reflective (good for winter biking in Seattle). My only complaint is that the hook for the H2O pack tends to catch on things as I'm putting them into the pack. I'd suggest a quick redesign to flip the hook around so it faces the other way.

Very good backpack

I love how this backpack is laid out. Perfect amount of exterior and interior pockets to organize your gear (bladder, snacks, sunglasses, keys, trash, etc). The pack is light and great for day hikes. Due to the layout of the pack it's very versatile, I've used it as carry on luggage for short trips as well as my day pack when travelling to theme parks (carrying my go-pro, sunglasses, water, sunblock, jackets, etc). The only Con is it was a bit difficult for me to find the right shoulder adjustment location so the pack and waistband sat right. That is my reason for giving this pack 4 stars instead of 5. But overall very happy with my purchase.

Great pack!

I bought this pack because I wanted something lightweight, durable, and features that suited my needs (specifically the exterior features). It has surpassed my expectations. I have the black version that has plenty of exterior loops which is a must for me. I use them regularly and they are of good quality. The zipper is used often and has been through a lot since I've purchased it and has help up very well. I am hard on my gear, so it takes a beating. It's lightweight and the interior and exterior storage space is perfect. It's also pretty darn comfortable for a pack this lightweight and for the amount of weight I put into it. Love this bag and might get another one to make a go-bag. Good stuff.

A nearly perfect day pack except....

This would be a 5-star review, except that the binding that covers the seams next to the main pocket zipper jams in the zipper at the upper left and right corners. Based on others' reviews, it looks like this is a new development, perhaps due to redesign or a new REI supplier within the last year, since that's when others' zipper complaints started showing up. I checked out multiple instances of this day pack at two REI stores in the Bay Area in the hope of finding one without this flaw, but they all have it. PLEASE let us know when a redesigned version becomes available.

A really simple, yet versatile pack.

I've been looking for a really simple pack that I can use for day hiking, urban cycling, and daily commuting. This pack's size and features are nice. For a day trip in the Rockies, I stuffed a 3L water bladder, a bunch of energy bars, a bluetooth speaker, a jacket, a pair of shoes, 1st aid, a pencil-bag-turned catch-all, a shemagh, and some EDC items. 3L was definitely too much water, still, the pack rode oh so well. The shoulder straps are perfect for the weight, the back is padded and firm, and the hip belt kept the load stable when running up and down the mountain. I ended up returning this pack for a larger one, intended for camping but still suitable for day hiking. Also, the top pockets are a little too small.

Not too big, Not too small, Just Right !

Needed a new day pack after retiring my 1972 REI day pack that did a kazillion day hikes. This REI pack hits a sweet spot of just the right size. Very well made. Nice side pockets that hold the water bottles. Nice small top pocket for glasses and phone.Lots of clipping for outside items. A little back padding and suspension to keep items away from the old back. Sternum clip keeps the straps in place. Carried all the essential day hike items without being over stuffed. Rides like a dream. Makes Goldilocks a happy camper.

Trail 25 Day pack

My uses: Good size for cycling to tennis with racquets & shoes. Good size for day hikes / commuting/ etc. Has a compartment for a Hydration bag (not included) After a couple of weeks of use: Padding down the back is quite thin. Not a problem but I have only used it cycling so far. Spend another $10-20, and some of the other brands have better back support. I'd prefer a fold-over top, instead of the zipper. Comes unzipped if I pick it up from the front. I doubt it's very waterproof. Suprise... The little pocket in the bottom contains a rain pack, so that addresses the waterproofing comment. Overall, pretty good value for the price. Probably the lowest price in that size.

Great Pack, but the zippers

I love this pack. It has great volume for a day/overnight trip, and is flexible enough to serve as a work/computer backpack. I took this pack with me to the Himalayias for a week and it performed wonderfully both as a carryon and day trekking pack. I now use it daily to carry my computer and other work things. The straps are comfortable, and there are more than enough ways to lash things to the outside. My one gripe is with the zipper to the main compartment. The quality of the zipper does not instill long term confidence, and the zipper seam on the inside of the pack has begun to unravel a bit at one of the curves of the zipper causing it to snag sometimes. Overall I love the balance and features of this pack enough to overlook the zipper and I would recommend this pack to my friends.
