Beast of a Tent, Best for Group Trips

A little background, I just got back into camping and hiking September of last year. After quite a bit of research, I decided on this tent, and purchased it toward the end of that month. Since then, I've put this thing through it's paces. It's seen over a dozen backpacking and camping trips, several hellacious thunderstorms, snow, below-freezing nights, 40mph wind gusts, and a week sitting on the beach, about 75 yards from the Atlantic Ocean. Not once have I gotten wet, or had any type of system failure whatsoever. Regarding snow, I'm not sure how this would hold up in heavy snow accumulation, as I primarily camp in the Southeast, and rarely get a ton of snow. It's incredibly spacious, has tons of pockets to stow headlamps, phones, flasks, etc, and has really been a pleasure to call home when out in the wilderness. Two people and gear fit perfectly in this, but I suppose you could fit three, if you really liked your hiking buddies. The dual vestibules are generous in size, and can easily hold two 70 liter packs and your shoes/boots. The only downside to this tent is that it's not light. I primarily go on solo trips, and hiking a five pound tent up and down mountains brings the pain rather quickly. I wanted something that could be multi-purpose, so that I could go out with a friend, or car camping, or backpacking and be comfortable. Chalk it up to my novice backpacking status, and budget at the time of purchase, but I'm definitely looking to go more ultralight after logging some trail miles. That said, this tent will remain in my gear collection for multi-buddy trips and car camping for years to come. 10/10 would recommend. :)

Unsuitable for use in high wind

Purchased this summer for extended trip in Nunavut. The extra curve in the pole is cute, but the additional room inside the tent does not compensate for the weakening of the tent, which collapses in high wind. There are insufficient tie spots on the fly to adequately brace. The low freeboard on the tent allows sand to blow under the fly and into tent. The clips on the tent do not positively lock on the pole (opening is too large). This requires two people for the set up process in a wind. The grommets on the foot print are slightly too large - foot print comes loose from the poles unless the footprint grommet is put on first and then covered with the tent grommet. On the plus side, the tent is roomy for it's weight and in a gentler environment would be excellent. the pole mender included with the five tent stakes is a nice addition.

Thoughtfully designed, quality tent

We do mostly car camping, but our trips usually involve flying to destinations where we rent a car and car camp. We wanted a lightweight, compact tent to make it easier to get all of our camping gear for two into a reasonably sized rolling duffle with a more manageable weight, as well as looking ahead to the possibility of backpacking. I did a lot of research on 2 and 3 person tents before settling on this one, reading reviews, comparing specifications, seeing them set up in person and setting some up myself. I like that the main upper body of this tent is not totally mesh like so many lightweight tents and the asymmetric design with solid nylon extending higher up on one end wall (approx 30 inches high) while at the other end the mesh comes down much lower (to within 7 inches from tent floor) is a real plus. On colder or windy nights we sleep with our heads at the end more protected by the solid nylon, on hot nights, our heads are at the mesh end for more breeze and ventilation. Without the fly, the more enclosed end provides more privacy, so we orient that end towards other campers, road or trail. The view through all that mesh with the fly pulled back or removed is great. The pole structure of 2 crossed connected poles plus the separate brow pole was easy to set up and handle. While doing my research, I set up one tent that had 3 poles connected in an ’H’ design that was awkward and frustrating. With that H pole design, I needed to keep one hand on the poles at all times to keep the whole thing from collapsing during setup. This was not an issue with the Tungsten 3, the crossed poles with ends inserted into the tent body corners stood by themselves. The brow pole structure provides excellent headroom. The pre-bent ‘knee’ design of the poles makes for a much more vertical tent space at the ends of the tent, where other tents often slope or sag down to make that space less usable. I like the rounded tent door which can easily be zipped open or closed in one fluid circular motion. When open, the door hangs to the side, out of the way, not lying on the floor where it would get stepped on when entering or exiting the tent. I like that the door zipper does not end at the centerline of the tent right at the peak, but extends several inches past the center. Just those few extra inches allows an easier exit and entry with a more rounded opening at the top of the door, rather than a sharp, abrupt narrower opening at the top. All in all, I love this tent so far and can’t wait to test it on many camping trips to come.

great tent, great price

We just received it yesterday and i immediately pitched it to see how it was. I'm 6' 1" and fit inside with plenty of room to spare. It would be a bit snug with three people but this is perfect for 2. Comes with a nice footprint, great quality tie downs and pegs. The build quality is fantastic, the zippers are relatively quiet. there are pockets/compartments all over the inside of this tent for what ever small gear you may want to store. The tent is very light especially if you didn't bring the rain cover. I haven't had a chance to camp with it yet, but sitting in the tent in my backyard yesterday like a small child reinforced my belief that this was an excellent purchase.

Great Buy

Bought this tent before I took my Motorcycle out east. Used it in the Adirondacks and got poured on all night but it kept me nice and dry. Used it later that trip in Acadia N.P. and had no issues. If you are on hard ground I could see needing tougher stakes as I have used these types from a previous Marmot tent in Wyoming and bent a few of them but for this trip i had soft ground and used a rubber mallet and had no issues. Love that it comes with a footprint and set-up is extremely quick and easy. As said before to sleep 3 people you would all have to be extremely comfortable with each other or keep it to just having 2 people for maximum comfort but that is common on all backpacking tents.

Really happy with purchase

My wife and I picked up this tent for an upcoming cross-country car camping trip. We tested it out at Denali National Park this weekend and we're really happy with its performance. It rained on us the entire time and aside from condensation on the rainfly, the tent stayed dry. It was easy to set up, even in a downpour and was roomy inside, perfect for a queen size air mattress. We needed some extra stakes to guy out the tent, but other than that the tent didn't need any additional gear. I would recommend extra stakes anyway, the ones that come with the tent bend easily.

Kept us high & dry

Looking for a packable tent that still gave us ample space, we gave this a try. We were leery, as we were very loyal to our trusty REI brand tents, but gave it a try. There we were, on the rugged shore of Lake Superior when we could hear a major storm rumbling in off the lake. Thunder like bowling balls, cracking lighting, and then buckets of drenching rain. We kept looking for leaks (found none), and were amazed to discover we were actually sitting in a temporary pond about 3" deep - we could poke the floor all around and see that we were definitely submerged. Thank goodness for the "bathtub" construction of the floor, and the thoughtful craftsmanship that went into this tent. We still feel a little disloyal to REI, but we absolutely love this tent.

Buy it!

I was looking to replace for my old Talus 2 because the vestibule was shot. I wanted something a little bigger that could fit my wife and 2 dogs, without being too heavy to justify bringing on trips where I will be the only one using it. We have taken a few o the Sierras this summer and the tent is absolutely perfect. Easy to set up, footprint included, double door, double vestibule, full screen roof, and packs down to the same size as my Talus 2. For the price I simply could not ask for a better tent.

This is a great tent for the price

Had the misfortune of buying a cheap 3 person tent at a box store. Dismal failure on several areas so decided to bite the bullet and buy a better quality tent. Went to the REI store in Richmond, VA where we have had such good luck buying other equipment and sullies for camping. This tent is bigger and roomier that the cheap tent. the clips that hold it to the poles are great. The tent goes up the first time in less than 10 minutes. Comes with a ground footprint. Folds up and goes back into the bag easy. We are planning on going camping next week. I'll update this when we get back. The young man who helped us decide on the right tent was very knowledgeable about the equipment and helped us get the most tent for our budget with all the features that we wanted. Our shopping experiences at REI have always been wonderful. Thank You.

Great and roomy

A little long for my Osprey pack, but held up well. Went up in just a few minutes and definitely seemed high quality. The rain fly is the heaviest aspect and could be left behind if there is nice weather coming. The tent had quiet zippers and lots of hooks for whatever I collected in my pockets. Taking the whole family on a short trip this weekend. Excited to use it again.

Great design for solo or two.

Since this tent is only available online now I thought I'd write a review since most people won't have the benefit of seeing it. The Marmot Tungsten 3P has proven to be a solid investment - good stitching, quality zippers and durable waterproofing. Weighing 5lbs 15ozs it's not an ultralight set-up but when compared to the Marmot 2P which weighs 4lbs 11ozs and the cost of the ultralight brands I'll deal with the extra pound+ to have the extra room and save the cash for other gear. I use this pack for backpacking and cross-country motorcycle camping and over the three seasons I've had zero issues.
