A kayak that folds into a suitcase!
We've been following this company Oru for several years when they first started their kickstarter and when REI started selling them it was a chance to get them with a good return policy. They are absolutely wonderful, I never thought I'd be able to own my own kayak, having a small apartment and a small car. We use them in the summer on the Chicago River, and my friend has gone on to Lake Michigan. In the summer I can keep it in my car all the time in case I have free time on the way home. Takes me about 20 minutes to put it together and 10 minutes to fold it back up. Tried inflatable kayaks first that they end up being a big hassle and you worry about punctures. One thing is the quality control could be slightly better, I did return one that had a quirk folding it up. REI exchanged it for a newer model that was fine. It's a small company in San Francisco that makes them.
OruKayak does what it promises
I made a trip to Florida for kayaking. I checked the OruKayak as luggage in its shipping box, no extra fee. After practicing folding and unfolding a couple of times, it took me about 15 minutes to put together at the landing site and is getting faster each time. Taking it apart was less than 5 minutes. I don't see this as a high performance kayak, but it is excellent for the gentle river paddling that we did through the mangroves. No car rack, no heavy kayak, just a box to put into the trunk or check. We have the original Bay versions and the seat is stiff, needs a gel pad or something for comfort, or buy the newer version. Be prepared for people asking questions!
only used it once, already totally worth it
I bought this because I have a small car and limited storage space. This thing is fantastic. Did not take long to master folding and unfolding. Handles well in the water and can get up to speed. Spare room enough even when folded to fit my paddle and life jacket inside, very neat and tidy. The portability is really amazing, I can't wait to try taking it up into the sierras, on road trips, and backpacking trips.
Finally! I can go on the water
Finally I can go out on the water again without having to worry about storage or a big gas guzler for transport. My Oru Kayak has amazing stiffness and maneuverability and is a huge eye catcher whenever I unpack it.
FANTASTIC boats
Fantastic boats. It feels like Christmas every time I unpack and assemble the kayak. Corrugated plastic turned into imminent freedom.
Great for smaller paddler!
This lightweight boat makes it possible for me to get out and paddle without having the issue of getting a kayak on and off a roof rack or trailer. Assembly takes some practice, but with each time it gets easier and faster. The boat itself is nimble, watertight and very fun.
smart portable practical kayak
This is an excellent kayak, I love how its so easy to carry around on hikes even and cross rivers or lakes.
Incredible
Folds and unfolds easy and fast, takes up no space in my car. Finally I can own a kayak and actually take it places! So far the durability is great, seems like it will withstand some abuse.
Perfect kayak for Colorado lifestyle
I love my kayak, it's compact and I can take with me when I go hiking then enjoy kayaking at a lake that's impossible to bring a regular kayak because of weight or not accessible by car
easy, stable, and smooth
This Kayak is pretty easy to put together and once assembled it is smooth and stable in the water. It seems durable. I really like the foldup and put away feature and stores easily in the garage
