great shoe!!! Shipping not so great!!!
this is a great shoe!!! I'm so glad they are bomb proof... after how they were shipped and delivered today. I wasn't so sure the shoes would be ok. The box was destroyed in delivery but the shoes are great!!! Can't wait to get out on the trails and get them dirty!!!!
Great for flat pedal biking
Fit: true to size, the fit was perfect. I need a wide toe box and these were also perfect in that regard. They were comfortable out of the box. Grip: This is my first pair of Five Tens. I have read all the hype about superior grip, etc. I have to say these live up to the hype. Features: The shoe feels well padded, but padding is not too soft, so they fit snugly but not tight. Sole is stiff enough that pedal pressure is not too concentrated under foot, but not too stiff that walking is awkward. Laces are thick and plenty long enough. Overall, I am very pleased with this shoe and would recommend for flat pedal mountain (or other) biking.
Best shoes out there for riding flat pedals
For the last several years, I rode clipless (Clip in) shoes and pedals on my mountain bike. At the time I thought it was the best solution, but always wished for that ability to quickly "unclip" when riding challenging obstacles. These are the best compromise of pedal efficiency and not being attached to the pedal. They ride like clipless for about 75% of the pedal stroke.. and you never have to worry about not being able to put a foot down if you get into some hairy terrain. Plus, I can drive to the trailhead wearing these. A little soft where the pedal contact are is though. I'd guess the more expensive version of this shoe might fix that problem.
My go to shoe from now on
Unbelievably grippy sole, great support and foot protection. They felt 1/4 size too small, tighten laces makes them perfect
It’s a great shoe but just not for anything above light trail rides
I have owned the five ten Trailcross lows, and the trailcross gortex, and I personally have not found the right shoe for me. The trailcross series Falls apart within a few rides, and this shoe has much better quality but it lacks on the most important thing for a bike shoes pedal grip. The first time I took these out I was excited to try them and I went down a tech trail and my feet would just bounce around. I originally thought it was because they were not broken in yet, like you probably are now. But I have taken them out a good 17 times sense and it has not changed to the poin I have given up on them and I’m going back to my old ones for now
Works As Advertised
I think these are great shoes and there is a noticeable difference in how they stick to the pedals. Honestly though, I feel like there is some hyperbole in other reviews and comments I’ve read. I like the stiffness, comfort and grip of the shoes but I can’t help but feel like I overpaid a bit for what I got. Maybe I set the bar a little high in my own head. I think if I can get two seasons out of these shoes, I’ll feel better about them. I did order one half size up which was perfect for me. I switched out the laces for cords which stay neatly tucked and out of the way of pedals (see photo). Those were a huge upgrade and I highly recommend doing that.
Work great, I wish they offered them in wide
These shoes definitely deliver what they promise. Quality feel materials, comfy tongue, stick to my pedals (Spanks) like glue. Almost too well, you really have to lift your foot off to re position. They don't feel they were super stiff, but with a wide platform pedal I didn't feel the need for a overly rigid sole, I'd rather have them be walkable, which they are. My only complaint, and this isn't really a product flaw, I have wide feet, and these are definitely on the narrow side. I bought a half size up and I really had to loosen the laces, not ideal, but after a few rides it seems to work. A bigger size up would have been stupid long. I haven't had them long enough to speak to durability, but the quality seems to be there.
Great shoe but sizing is a problem
Started searching for platform shoes since I've abandoned clips for MTB riding. Ordered these online based on posted reviews and Five Ten's reputation for quality climbing shoes. Ordered my normal size even though some reviews suggested the Freerider's were a bit narrow. After wearing them around the house for a several hours and with the lightest of socks, I've concluded the length is OK but they are too narrow to be comfortable. No quibbles whatsoever with the shoes except the fit. Will have to return them to REI.
A good option for wide feet.
Very happy with the shoes so far. I have a wide foot, 11 2E, so after reading some other reviews, these seemed like my best option. The Primeblue did not seem to have any stretch, whereas the leather does allow for some needed give to accomodate for the width. I have only gotten out twice since purchasing, but so far the soles are a nice stiff platform with a great tacky bottom for pedal contact. The shoes overall are comfy and a great option for some wide feet. The size 11 were too tight, so 1/2 size up turned out to work perfect. The 4 star rating is only because of limmited use and I cannot speak for their longevity.
Sizing off
First off, ordered size 11... always wear size 11... way to tight on foot. Made for skinny elf feet or something. Anyways got half size bigger and they somewhat fit. About 1/2" too long so uncomfortable to walk around in. Foot bed weird that long. Plus side is these do stick to pedals like glue and look good. Just wish they made wider toe box so they would fit perfect. Really have to have super slim feet for these shoes, like straight from heel to toe. I guess if had big toe removed would be great! Oh well. Keeping shoes for riding only cause great for downhill and jumps. Suck to walk in.
