This is a great jacket. I bought it for hiking/camping, but I also wear it around in NYC. It's extremely light (and easy to store in my backpack) but warm, which is perfect for my hiking/camping purposes. Beyond just utility, this jacket looks great. I often find that many women's jackets are taken in too much in the mid section, causing a substantial flair towards the bottom of the jacket that always looks terrible on me. This jacket has the perfect fitted silhouette that's still feminine despite having the significant cinch in the mid section. I'm 5'4 and 115 pounds. I bought an XS and can fit an additional thin hoodie on top of a long sleeve layer and underneath this jacket.
I went to REI to replace my 7 year old North Face down jacket (which I loved) and tried on the Patagonia Down Sweater Hoody on a whim. I was sold immediately. The fit and comfort were perfect. I now wear it all the time. I purchased the jacket in navy which not only looks stylish, but also hides dirt. Additionally, when you wear the hood it stays on your head easily without sliding off like they can do with other jackets. The Patagonia is extremely warm, yet lightweight and not bulky. I am 5'8", 130 lbs. and bought size small. I probably could have gone with the XS, but I wanted to make sure I had plenty of room for movement and the potential to add more layers in colder conditions. I also have a longer torso and this jacket is the ideal length.
Patagonia is fit for a straight hipped lady. I have tried many styles in the past and was hopeful that this one would possibly fit. Unfortunately, Patagonia is fit for very straight hipped ladies, with no room for a typical hourglass figure. This jacket fit's the shoulders, arm length, and waist, but goes straight down from there with no give for the hips. It is made for women that are built with slim hips no matter what size you are through the shoulders. I love Patagonia as a brand but will have to buy my outerwear elsewhere.
I tried every single women's down jacket at REI and another backpacking specialty store, including jackets from Western Mountaineering, Arc'teryx, North Face, Mountain Hardwear, Columbia and Patagonia. Since every body is different, I tested the jackets for fit and warmth without even looking at the prices. The lightweight down jackets that my friends love - like the MH Ghost Whisperer - had what felt like a short, tight torso and fit me terribly. The Patagonia and North Face jackets, however, fit my 5'8", 125 lb. frame the best. Both were extremely comfortable, were just right across the chest, warm and stylish. While the North Face Thermoball weighed less, I chose the Patagonia for its extra puffy loft (and subsequent warmth). The size S was great but the chest felt too tight for additional layers underneath. Going up to a size M was perfect and the styling is so nice that it didn't look bulky. The jacket has kept me toasty warm in cold mountain and desert nights ever since!
I've had the product for about 3 months now and I can say that it was the most worth while purchase in a long time. After wasting a lot of money on cheaper/less superior coats that were extremely heavy-I decided to splurge on this. I am average height and typically wear a small for most tops. This was true to size. I can even wear a hoodie underneath and not feel baggy. Important to mention: I hate the cold. I can walk for an hour outside at night, when it is around 25 degrees, with a regular cotton long-sleeved shirt underneath and that part of my body will feel comfortable. I cannot wait to go hiking with this. It is convenient as a patron of stores to be able to squeeze this coat into a small ball and not have to carry it around.
The 2015 version of the down sweater hoody fits me much better than previous versions, which I always found too boxy, and too short in torso length and arm length (body type: long and lean, longer-than-average torso, 5'7", 130 lbs, 32C, XS size hoody). The fit is more stylish, contoured, and feminine than previous versions. I can comfortably wear a shirt and an R1 style layer underneath this hoody, but if I wanted more layers than that, I would probably need to size up.
I wanted an insulated jacket for backpacking because I'm always the coldest person at camp when the sun goes down. I researched online and tried on a few before going with this jacket because of warmth, fit, and comfort. However, I was wary about the durability of the fabric, as noted by other reviews. I did not expect it to be quite this delicate -- I've had the jacket for 2 weeks max, only wearing around the house and on my bicycle commute in Los Angeles, and lo and behold, a nice big rip came out of nowhere -- I'm not even sure what it got snagged on. While this jacket is warm, comfy, and looks nice, it is not durable. I definitely don't think it would last a single backpacking trip, even if I was careful and only wore it at camp. The fabric really is paper thin, although it is nicely windproof and water resistant. Patagonia, make your products more durable! Lightweight means nothing if the product doesn't hold up, especially for $279!
Two of my friends recommended this jacket to me so I ordered it during the Black Friday sale. I initially ordered a small, but my shoulders are abnormally broad so I exchanged it for a medium so I can comfortably sleep in it when camping. If you want a more tailored look I would stick with what the size chart says. For reference I am 5’8 and 130lbs. This jacket is incredibly lightweight and unbelievably warm. I am constantly freezing and this has kept me toasty on windy evening walks in the 30’s.
I'm a down jacket fanatic and own way too many of them and this one is my new favorite for several reasons. It's figure flattering, light yet warm. It also doesn't bleed feathers everywhere like most other brands. This jacket is very high quality. I'm 5'3" usually a size 4 and I bought the small.
If you are a bugger girl and looking for a Patagonia jacket that actually fits over your boobs and hops, look no further. I am 5'9 and 220 lbs, all the XL slim fit Patagonia jackets would not even fit over my shoulders normally. This one is REGULAR FIT, and way roomier than anything else I have tried from this brand before. I got a XXL but will exchange it for XL, because im drowning in the XXL.
