Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bomber! My wife and I bought this for our 3 year old son (he's big for his age), and all three of us are very happy with it. It's a great winter coat. My son has an easy time getting it on and off thanks to the nylon-lined sleeves and big zippers. He also easily dons and doffs the hood whenever he wants. The fleece insulation is plenty thick enough to be warm in the dead of winter, while not making him look like Ralphie's little brother on "A Christmas Story" who is nearly immobilized by his winter coat. The outer shell is similar to gore-tex...waterproof and windproof, but without the irritating noise or crinkley-ness. I think it looks great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Fit My 11 year old boy, 5'1", very skinny, tried on a lot of ski/snowboard coats. This was his favorite that he tried on. We bought the boys Large. He thinks it is super comfy. Only complaint I have is that it is boring looking. I wish the design/appearance was better. But, my son doesn't care about looks, just how it feels, and he loves this coat. The coat is good quality to, as always with REI products. My son likes that it is not too bulky.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Our favorite winter jacket! This is our third time buying this jacket. It's simple, it's warm, it resists water & wet snow, and it's been easy for my son to get on and off. We have used it in Seattle area winters and, for the last two years, in Bavaria. I really like the fleece insulation (it's even in the hood). The liner does not zip out, but it's perfect for heading to school on cold days and taking to the slopes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice and light for the warmth! This jacket would be greatly improved with side-seam pockets. It has patch pockets on the front, but my kid wants to stick his hands in his pockets!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm with great rain protection I bought this for my 12 year old son as a winter jacket. He typically doesn't like to wear anything bigger than a hoodie but he loves wearing this jacket. He says he likes that it's warm enough in the snow but it gets a little warm on cold rainy days. I ordered it online and selected the 14-16 size thinking it would be too large for him, but it fits him perfectly and may have enough room to get him through next winter as well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great jacket, runs small I bought this jacket for both my son and daughter. They are pretty average all around. It ran a full size smaller for both of them. Size up! That said, it's a great jacket and I liked it so much that I did buy the bigger size.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Plenty of warmth, little bulky My son gives this jacket an A for warmth but its a little bulky. The zippers have covers/flaps which makes it a bit difficult for him to zip. Jacket is well made and is holding up great.

Does this jacket have an approximate temperature rating?  Is it warm enough for  Minnesota winter?

Due to the many variables, REI does not give temperature ratings on clothing. That said, the Timber Mountain is not warm enough for Minnesota winters.

I am trying to understand the sizing chart. For a 3 year old, would a XXS 4-5 most likely be the right size? Does the Height Range refer to the child's height?

Asked by: ili0502
The size chart is not based on age. The height range is a general guide for size based on the child's height. It's best to get the measurements of the user and compare them to the size chart. Pick the size that best accommodates their measurements.
