Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality pack with one shortcoming I purchased this pack to use for work as my Swiss Gear laptop backpack has finally worn out and their warranty is poor. I needed a nice quality pack to transport my 17" Dell and the description said this may work. Upon receiving the pack I could tell the overall quality was above average and it was built to last. The laptop compartment opening at the top of the pack was very small and my laptop did not fit inside. I noticed that the compartment was padded nicely and very deep but the opening was off by about 2 inches and I thought there is no way that any 17" laptop would fit inside there. I recommend to Patagonia that they just extend the zipper 2 more inches and it would fit every 17" laptop. I returned it and bought a North Face pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for traveling with small kids As with most things my family buys at REI, we use this bag not so much to survive the hardships of the great outdoors but the wear and tear of being out and about with three tiny children. We use this backpack as a diaper bag, and it has so many easy to access compartments it's just perfect. It can also carry snacks and a book and games and an extra jacket or two and a change of clothes and two water bottles in the side pockets and it's so comfortable and unisex so my husband can carry it, too, and easy to keep clean and our hands are free to take care of the kiddos. This bag is on my baby/kid gear top ten must have list.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unfortunate design This back pack has absolutely no structure to it, so anything you put inside just floats around and the bottom sags terribly. It had very thin straps with basically no padding for how large the backpack is, and was extremely uncomfortable. I liked the way it looked and I did like that it was large and I could carry a lot in it, so I gave it a try for couple months but ultimately returned it because I hated everything else about it. For the price, there are much better backpacks out there that are far more functional and comfortable.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not worth the price. Okay, so I bought this backpack to take on the road with me while I'm surveying. I've found that while the laptop pouch could most certainly fit a 17" laptop, the opening could barely squeeze in my 15.6". On top of that, while the materials and construction are of good quality, I don't believe they command such a price. You're definitely paying a lot of money for the brand, which doesn't really float my utilitarian boat. Super awesome color schemes though.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Solid, but not perfect. I overall really like this backpack. It's a great bag with tons of space, and it's really well-organized for commuting. The laptop sleeve is super roomy and keeps my laptop safe. The main compartment has tons of space, perfect for stashing a change of clothes in addition to all of your daily essentials, and I love that it can be cinched down. The front compartment fits all your easy access stuff. And the top compartment is perfect for keys, headphones, etc. I have a few specific problems though, which I think hold it back in a crowded market. - I haven't done anything too damaging to it but there's already a small tear up top. - The hip belt isn't substantial enough to do anything but also can't be stored anywhere when not in use. - The fabric isn't very stain or water resistant. I've had this for six months and it looks like I've had it for over a year.

Is this backpack machine washable? If so, what are the recommended settings?

Asked by: alexm
We do not recommend machine washing packs. To prolong the lifespan, it is best to hand wash with a mild detergent. You can read more about cleaning packs here: https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/backpack-how-to-clean.html

DOES this pack hold a 17 inch laptop? Someone posted a comment that said the zipper isn't long enough to allow insertion of a 17 inch laptop into the padded compartment. Is this true?

Asked by: RLSmothers
This pack is designed to fit a 17" laptop. However, laptops can vary in size and dimensions, so although this is designed for a 17" laptop, it is possible that some laptops may not fit.

what are the dimensions in inches for this backpack?  Need to check if can be used for airline carry on, thanks

Asked by: Heavylunch
The Chacabuco Daypack measures 20" x 14" x 12" which is 46 linear inches. Most airlines require a piece of carry-on luggage to be no bigger than 45 linear inches (L + W + H) to meet carry-on size restrictions. This can vary so please check with your airline ahead of time.
