Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful for rehab, pleasure and transportation. I bought my bike in 2008 after I had my knee surgery and subsequent fracture of same knee. My orthopedic surgeon instructed me to purchase a bicycle. After "trying on" all the offerings at the big box stores I found this Electra Townie at the bike shop. It was love at first sight ! It is comfortable, easy on my joints and of course good looking. I am full figured and it accommodates my weight nicely but is not too heavy for me to lift into the car or down the stairs. I ride it every day to keep my knee in shape and to the grocery store. After 5 years I still have not had to repair or replace any parts. It has proved to be one of the best purchases I have ever made! I highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The 21 speed Townie is a fun, comfy bike! We just took delivery (June, 2016) of a blue 21 speed Townie! It shifts gears easily; provides an incredibly smooth ride; the seat is like sitting on a sofa; and it's truly a lot of fun! REI put it together for us and they did a great job. This is a lovely bike for someone who hasn't ridden in a while and maybe has some knee or hip issues (I have arthritis in my hands and feet). I'm overweight, but the bike is incredibly comfortable and steady and inspires me to get out more, by making bike riding as much fun as when I was a kid. I LOVE this bike!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Bike for knee problems I bought this bike 3 years ago after researching bikes for people with knee injuries. The online reviews were great. The practical experience is even better. After developing arthritis in both knees, I could not use my Trek due to pain. I have had no problems with knee pain using this bike. The pedals are pushed forward in front of the seat position allowing your knees some relief. The bike is designed so that you stand flat footed when mounting the bike. No more hopping on and off with the simultaneous jarring that is tough on the joints. The gears shift smoothly and I have reached speeds of up to 24 mph- not bad for an around town, groomed trail bike. Hills can be a challenge because of the forward pedal position. It is a trade off for the joint comfort on the balance of the ride. I highly recommend this bike for folks who have knee issues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this bike! I bought my bike June 2014 and have 700 miles on it. This bike has the most comfortable seat that I have experienced. I wanted a cruiser and was a little leary of the forward pedals but it has been an easy transition. I have gone as many as 40 miles and regularly do 5-20 miles. It shifts easily. No soreness on my joints. No numb hands. I love this bike. And people walking on the trails love my "townie" bell. Very glad I bought this bike!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderfully Comfortable Bike Easy and Fun bike! Superb on easy trail rides and about town. The Electra Townie 21D can also perform on hilly, packed, dirt roads with 'All Purpose' tires. I needed all 21 gears to have something low enough to get up steep hills. Peddling hard from the slightly reclined Townie position felt easier than on other bikes. Going downhill on dirt with loose sand and pebbles to small rocks, it felt a little unsteady at first since you sit up straighter and have higher center of gravity. Easily fixed by leaning forward, weight on peddles and slide butt to back of seat, giving lower center of gravity and improved control. Fun over washboard, you can run the tires as low as 35psi to absorb the bumps, acting as your shock absorbers. Brakes very responsive when slowing or quick stops needed. With small hands, I can operate breaks w/o letting my thumbs off of grips. Twist shifters are easy to operate but seem odd to me that you twist forward on one side to increase grear and twist down to increase on the other. As always, shift down before you climb the hill to avoid grinding gears. I love that I can put my feet down at any time and I'm only 5'1". Terrific bike and safe riding for my knee and neck issues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quite comfortable and easy to ride! I had a 25 year old bike that earned every scratch, dent and flat tire. It was time for a new bike, more suited to my current style of cycling...easy going and comfortable! This bike is easy to access, shifts smoothly and the seat is totally comfortable. My back also prefers to be more upright, so I appreciate the setting/style of the handlebars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most comfortable bike ever I love it! I'm happy to get on it and riding makes me feel like I am 10 years old again! I was looking for a bicycle that wouldn't hurt my rear. I have a problem that goes beyond typical saddle soreness in that it does not matter how often I ride I still hurt. That problem in turn makes me not want to get out and exercise. I test drove many bikes when searching for the right one and all those little 2 minute rides left me in pain from my sit bones. The Townie is the only bicycle that doesn't put pressure in that area! Because of the foot forward pedals your body weight/pressure isn't going straight down onto your sit bones. I got the 21 gears because it isn't easy to stand and pedal up a hill because of this design. If you can anticipate and change gears before you hit the hill then it is no problem!

Can a back basket be added to the Townie bike?  Does it come in different frame sizes?

Asked by: 91446
Baskets can be added to the Townie 21D with a rear rack. Electra unfortunately only makes one frame size.

Can this be equipped with a rear rack, fenders, and panniers for bike commuting??

Asked by: jkl123
I just bought this bike and asked the same question and they said yes... the store only carried fenders in black, white and silver. But I think you might be able to order other colors direct from Electra. But they had baskets and racks at the store as well. Hope this helps!
