Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome product! I'd like to point out that most water filtration systems (I use Katadyn's Hiker PRO water filter) are only moderately effective against bacteria and NOT effective against waterborne viruses. If these are of concern for you, I recommend further treating your filtered water with these Aquamira drops. Not to be confused with chlorine, the chlorine dioxide in these drops has the added benefit of being an additional, effective layer of defense against Giardia protozoa (which, admittedly, any decent filter does a fine job removing). Small enough to fit right in with my filter, I carry these on backpacking trips after an unfortunate and uncomfortable bout with an unknown waterborne pathogen in Army SERE school.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best water treatment ever I was surprised that it took REI so long to start carrying Aquamira. I have been using this product for many years. I have used it mostly in Minnesota and in the Grand Canyon. I have NEVER gotten sick while using it and believe me, I have even drank water that I had to fight beavers to get. Water that came from puddles in dried up river beds etc. Every other method that I used failed at one point or another (UV, pumps filters). The best water I have tasted in my life was coming out of a swamp on the Superior Hiking Trail and treated with Aquamira!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great This is my new #1 water treatment now. My group of 4 ended up relying on this in Coyote Gulch, Utah when the silt in the stream was clogging the filters. The silt was so fine that even letting the water settle overnight did not prevent the filter clogs. No one got sick using the Aqua Mira. You just need to plan ahead so you can allow it to work for the required 30 minutes before drinking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Option I used this product everyday while backpacking for a month. It was easy to use and was light weight. It did not taste funny at all. I would highly recommend anyone using in the back county. When every ounce counts in your bag this is a great option. Also, you can't beat the price!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The only way to purify water while backpacking! I learned about Aquamira through a NOLS class, and it is the only water purification method they seem to use for all of their outdoor adventure courses. It is a lightweight and effective means of water treatment, and it removes any taste of contaminants. I use it for group backpacking with as many as 22 people, and it is the only method I recommend for the best water treatment on the trail.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but There is a Taste I found that taking some extra time to mix these and add them to your water is worthwhile when backpacking in busier areas. I have the MSR Hyperflow and use these in addition to be extra safe (who wants to get sick on the trail?!). While I have found them to work well, I do taste a difference. When hiking at high elevation and potentially feeling nauseous, adding the taste of Aquamira to my water only amplifies this and makes me less inclined to drink. It's a very small detail, and a fussy one at that, but definitely something to consider. I still use these drops and find them to be my preferred water treatment other than the Hyperflow. On a side note, the fiddley part is mixing part A and B. I have done it with gloves on in below freezing temperatures without an issue.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Used on Camino de Santiago Used the product while on the Camino de Santiago, in a 3 liter bladder. Always fresh tasting water... kept the bladder clean and free of 'stuff' ... while several other hikers got sick from the supposed 'potable' water, I never had a problem. Lightweight & 100% reliable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Safe and best tasting. I have used this for several years and I love it! It retired my pump filter due to the amazing convenience and weight savings.

Questions & Answers

Is this a stand alone water purification option? The label is far from reassuring, "Simple-to-use Aquamira water treatment drops use chlorine dioxide to kill odor-causing bacteria and enhance the taste of stored potable water."

Asked by: hike2photo
Aquamira water treatment drops use the same chemical substance - chlorine dioxide - that is used in municiple water treatment systems. It is also the same treatment used in Aquamira Water Purifier Tablets. As such, it can be trusted as a stand-alone water treatment option.

Asked by: Matt
Using a filter on the already treated water will not diminish the effect of the treatment drops.

Can A and B be mixed in advance? If so, what is the shelf life of the combined solution?

Asked by: Hurting
These chemicals are regulated by the EPA and it is only recommended to mix them right before use.

Did Aquamira really switch from square/rectangular Part A and Part B bottles to round ones? If so, this is a mistake because the square ones can be taped together for convenience instead of having round ones loose in the pack ("Where's the other one?").

Asked by: Environmental John
They have indeed switched, and while taping them is now less convenient, they are less prone to being crushed/broken/leaking via the round bottles

Are there drop measurements for most standard-size water bottles, like 32oz, 24oz? Is it suitable to mix in Nalgene or aluminum and everything in between, or can the chemicals cause some plastics/metals to corrode?

Asked by: COgal
Seven drops each of part A and part B treat up to one liter of water. Fourteen drops of each part treats up to two liters of water. This treatment can be used in both Nalgene or aluminum bottles such as Hydro Flask. This treatment will not corrode the material (plastic or metal) of the bottle.

Do these drops have the same 30 minutes - 4 hours time to effectively kill everything like other chlorine dioxide tablets?

Asked by: Rymurf
Aquamira works in two stages: the initial mixing of parts A and B and the water purification. Parts A and B must be mixed in the provided cap (7 drops of each per liter of water) and allowed to react for about 5 minutes. Once added to water, the chemicals take 15 minutes to purify. If the water is very cold or cloudy, the purification time is increased to 20-30 minutes.
