Rated 4 out of 5 by from nice hat, but looses shape if you snap up the brim Better choice for me than the Tilley hat I had purchased before, because it was half the price, less hot, and I feel more "comfortable" actually using it every day and not just for special occasions. However, I snapped up the sides as I had done with my much older "Ultimate Hat", and it lost its shape after a few weeks. the brim pulls the sides out and the crown collapses downward especially in the front, reducing the effective size of the vents and making it look really sloppy. It gets a kind of ugly "20 mission crush" after a couple weeks of having the brims snapped up even if it is just in the closet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for sunny weather It's lightweight, stays on in the wind, and for strong gusts the cord is perfect. Used it all summer in Southern California mountains. A lot of very hot, sunny days. The brim is wide enough to give a lot of shade and most of the time I don't bother with sunglasses. It's also stiff enough to not flop around in the wind. Forget about "breathability" and supposed ventilation. When it's 100 degrees and the sun is beating down on you, you need shade. "Breathability" isn't going to cool you down to 75. Get this hat, enjoy the portable shade, and hope for some wind to cool you off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great coverage & stays on Bought this for a plein air painting weekend. It was sunny & breezy all 4 days, and this did the trick. Brim is large enough to shade my face and neck and the chin strap also tightens the hat so that it stays on comfortably. The mesh in the crown kept my head cool (I run hot all the time). It has snaps so that you can snap up one or both sides of the brim, but I did not use this feature. Note, I bought the men's size M because the women's sizes of S & M were too small for my head.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keeps the sunburn away This hat is great. It is not only comfortable, but the straps make sure it doesn't blow away in the wind, AND it really keeps the sun off your face to save you from nasty sunburns. I have taken it out both while hiking and kayaking and so far it's doing its job!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sturdy Hat Well constructed of good materials, should last for some time. Good sun protection and heavy weight stays put on a bike, but a bit much for working in 100+ desert days, though the venting does help some. What's with the snaps, seems useless for me. Not that cheap but well made.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing hat! Great GREAT hat! I haven't felt the need to write a review for a product in years, but this one had to be written. I love to hike in this hat, it's properly vented, and flexible. It is also great for the lake! and dries very fast. I love the different brim folding options, though I wish the snaps were like 1/4 inch to 1/2 more forward to create a better fold (REI are you listening?) instead of a dead even one. Otherwise it would be 5 stars! Personally I swapped out the lanyard for some survival Paracord and a custom bead.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It works I bought this hat recently in anticipation of a series of long field days this summer. I've taken it out a few times in warm weather and so far, it's doing the job I need it to do. It's easier to pack than my old straw hat. It keeps the sun off my face. It keeps the sweat out of my eyes. I like that the underside of the brim is a bit darker than the upperside, which reduces glare and thus, eyestrain. I think I'm in between sizes so the small was too snug and the medium size I bought is a little loose - though not so much that it's bothersome. I imagine this might change over time but for now, it's fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from REI Vented Explorer Hat Excellent hiking hat. It's comfortable, has good ventilation and the sweat band functions nicely. It appears to be well made. It's similar to a classic Tilley hat without the high price. Recommended without reservation.

Is it possible to wash or dry clean the men's Explorer Hat? Took on a river trip - it was perfect. Very sandy & sweaty. Would like to use again but pretty dirty.

Asked by: COSO
It is very much possible to wash the Vented Explorer Hat. We would recommend washing the hat by hand in a sink or bathtub with a mild detergent or Nathan Sport Wash.

Is that hat packable at all?

The REI Vented Explorer Hat can be flattened and packed, but doing this may cause crease lines if packed for extended periods of time.
