Excellent Choice for Heavier Dayhiking

Hiking in the desert, I prefer to carry more water than I need than less. At times I carry 6 or more liters of water (13.2 lbs). Add in snacks, emergency gear, first aid, etc, and my daypack weight often exceeds 20lbs. My previous pack would accommodate all this cargo, but any three plus hour hike would cause back and shoulder pain. This caused me to start searching for a pack with an internal frame. The first test of this pack was carrying 20lbs. of weight around the store for 90 minutes. The second was lugging nine liters of water ( I wanted to have at least five liters left at the end of my hike) for a seven hour hike. The result was zero pain, and a little stiffness in my lower back that was relieved by bending over and touching my toes, while wearing the pack. Carrying a mere six liters now feels like a dream. The compression straps keep your load exactly where you put it, and no amount of jumping, leaning, or scrambling has affected my balance. Living in the desert, I'm not sure how much I will use the included rain cover, but it is nice to know it is there. The trekking pole loops are intuitive and easy to use, and keep your poles out of the way when not in use, without sacrificing pack space. This pack is fairly large for dayhiking, but after strapping it on, it does not feel large. The extra room will come in handy for overnights and full weekend trips. The spousal unit has a similar pack and there is plenty of room for a sleeping bag, half the tent and food and sundries for overnight and weekend trips. All of these factors coupled with the Osprey guarantee make this purchase one of the best decisions I have made regarding outdoor gear. My only regret is not stepping up to a quality pack sooner.

Good But Could Be Better

I wanted to replace a very old REI pack in this size that had worn out but had many useful features. I needed to stay in the 30-35 liter size for long day hikes which required me to carry extra items because of changing weather conditions at higher elevations. I'm not a brand freak so I looked at all the brands that my local REI handled. To tell the truth, I'm not really happy with the features that all the the current manufacturers offer. In some ways, it seems like they all use a very similar design and have the exact same features, which to me seems very basic. Where are the small zipped side pockets that my ancient old REI pack had? Where is a mesh pocket on the back that my ancient pack had that allowed you to stow a wet or dirty item without having to stuff it in the main pack? All these new packs don't have any of these features. To me, it seems like all packs in this size range regardless of brand name, come from the same factory in China, designed the same, with the same lack of features, but in a wide assortment of colors. Is that what manufacturers think we only care about - the color of the pack? I'm really not very happy with the choice of the 5 or 6 brands offered by REI in this size range. This Osprey Stratos 36 Pack overall is adequate but not stellar. It rides well and is comfortable with 20-25 lbs on long day hikes covering up to 20 miles with up to 3000' of elevation gain. Its lack of small side pockets make digging into the pack to find smaller items a chore. The top removable pack has 2 compartments for smaller gear and is adequate. I use a 3 liter Platypus water bladder which fits nicely in the front compartment and works well. The 2 micro pockets on the belt work well and zip and unzip fairly easily on the move. If this pack had a couple of zipped side pockets and a mesh pocket on the back, I would love this pack. Come on manufacturers, give us some unique features that aren't the exact same as everyone else.

Love this bag!

I just purchased this bag a couple weeks back - and finally had the chance to take it out and break it in last weekend. We hiked Mt. LeConte via the Alum Cave Trail - a 12mi round trip and the bag couldn't have performed any better. I carried food, my JetBoil, rain gear, and plenty of extras and weighed in just around 18lbs. Shoulder straps were super comfortable as was the waist belt. I definitely will have no issues using this bag for an overnight bag. Plenty of space - without being TOO large. I definitely recommend this bag for backpacking or short - medium overnight trips.

Great Pack

Just bought pack last week and took on a 17 mile training hike yesterday. Super comfortable, cool on the back, great compression straps to pull in load. This one rides different on my hips than my old one, not a bad thing just different so I am a little sore today. I know that will go away with using it. Pack has easy access via top load or front panel....was able to get first aid kit, towards bottom of pack out with relative ease and without taking food, etc out. Got a couple more train hikes lined up before Half Dome in September. Can't wait for the next hike!!!! Invest in this pack, you can thank me later.

An excellent lightweight large daypack

This is a great larger daypack for those longer day trips or for short overnighters. For a 36 L pack it' actually feels SUPER lightweight. Doesn't have a lot of extra pockets that I typically look for my-self in a larger daypack but if you like simplicity in a daypack, then you will love this pack. It has Osprey's "stow on the go" trekking pole attachment system, an internal hydration pocket, a raincover even a small "sleeping bag compartment" that I typically use as a "wet chamber" for my rain gear. Biggest con is that this pack does't self stand (but really who cares). I am seriously thinking of using the Startos 36 on my 6 week Camino trip through Spain. A good buy indeed !

Changed the way I hike !

I bought this pack 3 weeks ago after a lot of research and I am impressed. It is hard to impress me with outdoor gear. I am picky ! I wanted a small garage and a rain cover. No exceptions. This Stratus has it all ! Very Comfortable. Easy to adjust. Holds a lot of weight without feeling it, and it keeps me cool. I am a big man, and I like to hike long distances. This has extended my comfort range to hike with more gear even farther. I have taken three major A.T. hikes and I continue to be impressed with storage, versatility, and comfort. Next month I will use it on a two day hike. Buy this pack, you will not be disappointed !

felt like heaven on my back

This pack is amazing. Im a beginner hiker and will be using this pack when i hike mt whitney. I put 30 lbs in this pack climbing Mt San Gorgino (whoever you spell that mt) Made me life easy on my back and hips. I pretty much have no complaints with the pack expect for one and that is having a pouch in the front so i can put random stuff to randomly carry and take out asap. Im glad I bought this pack out of HB REI belle terra. My Yoda (awesome worker there) was giving me what is necessary pack advice in hiking mt whitney in a day. I recommend this pack to anyone because its the perfect fit for a day use or multi day use.

Excellent functionality

Got this pack for a Grand Canyon hike. I haven't gone on the hike yet, but I have used the pack for smaller training hikes, and it's awesome! Very comfortable. Holds my 3L hydration reservoir with plenty of room to spare. Love the front zip for easy access to stuff inside, as well as the double pockets in the lid. Like another reviewer, I use the small sleeping bag area for rain gear. The back meshing is great for keeping cool. Light, pleasant, well-cushioned. Hip pockets are convenient. Love it all!

Great extended day hiking pack

I bought this about a month ago to replace an inexpensive big box store backpack. The adage " you get what you pay for" is so true with this pack. I'm not an overnighter but I do pack binoculars, a book, an organizational folder, and a variety of food whenever I go hiking so I was looking in the 35-40L range. This pack is a toploader with front access zippers and 2 pockets built into the top flap. Even with 3 liters of water and all my gear/ accessories, this pack carried the weight comfortably with no movement of my heavy items- thanks to the compression straps. I'm not going to go into details you can glean from visiting a store or judge it's ability as an overnighter or ultralight pack ( because that is not my experience ) but if you are a dayhiker who likes to bring some stuff along, this will do it comfortably and in style.

Plenty of space!

I upgraded from the stratos 24 to this pack as my everyday pack because I wanted something I could also use on weekend trips, and could carry more groceries. I was worried about going this much larger because I didn't want a huge unwieldy pack, but this pack is perfect! It's incredibly comfortable (all my Osprey packs have been) and has all the features I need (including an integrated rain cover) and none that I don't. If you're looking for a versatile day/weekend pack, this is the one.

great pack

I traded in my REI brand day pack for this. I love it. Lets face it, this is a day pack not a packing pack. If you want an ultralight pack nope this isn't it, if you want a Packing pack for a 5 day adventure, guess again this isn't it. If you want something that you could possibly do over night, or do a 12 mile round trip day trip in, well this is it. It is nice, and comfortable, I have a deep pocket in my back and this fit my back comfortably enough. I normally use a Gregory pack as my main pack due to my back and for comfort, however I am not planning on being in the back country for days with this pack. This is for local trails and having fun in. It fits everything I need for a trip. I would recommend this for day packing and a 1 nighter at most.
