I ordered four of these for car camping with my wife and kids. We had gone into an REI and tested out several pads, and my wife liked this one. She is pretty picky, but we found that this was the least expensive pad that she was comfortable with. We waited for them to go on sale to buy them. When they arrived, three of them inflated fully and were great, but the fourth seemed to be permanently compressed along one edge. After waiting a week to see if it would inflate correctly, we are sending it back. However, the other three are great. My wife and I just used two of them to sleep on the floor at my sister's house for two nights, and she thought they were more comfortable than my niece's bed. Other than the one flawed pad, we're very happy with this purchase.
We bought 4 of the xl size pads a couple years ago to replace some other pads from a popular outdoor outfitter that were failing after 2 years. Since then we have tent camped at least 25 times. Both weekend camping and a couple 2 week vacation car camping excursions. The self-inflation feature is not something I am patient enough to wait for so I just blow them up. They are versatile enough so my wife can have hers soft & squishy and I can have mine firm by adjusting the amount of air. The sleeping bag does not slide off the mat in the middle of the night. The XL size is long enough that my feet don't hang over the end. We had 1 puncture from a cactus spine but it has not leaked yet. They roll up into a nice compact roll but the stuff sack is large enough to accommodate a not so tight roll. I am 6'4" and 220 lbs with 2 boys in their pre-teens and if we have not been able to destroy them yet, they must be good. The cost may seem a little painful at first but, once you use them, they will be worth every penny.
I bought this sleeping pad to use when I was camping for 2 months straight over the summer in British Columbia. I am a 5'5'' ~115 female and I fit very well on the XL pad. In setting up my tent I ended up over a large tree root and on a slight incline (not the smartest decision). However, in 2 months I never once felt the root that was right under me through this sleeping pad, nor did my sleeping bag ever slide off the pad. I never write reviews but I was extremely satisfied with this product! I thought the self-inflating worked really well and was fast and I never had to re-inflate once during the whole 2 months. I will say that, when compressed, this pad is quite large, and took up a lot of space in my pack. However, for my puposes (just had to get everything to BC and set up camp once) I thought it was fine - totally worth it for the 2 months of great sleep it provided me with! I could understand perhaps wanting something smaller/lighter if you were going to be moving around a lot.
Being a full-time wilderness instructor for over 6 years, I have be a loyal fan of Therma-Rest. Most recently, weight is not a requirement so I wanted more cushion for the buck. This REI mattress is beyond thick and comfortable, with a durable material that is more resistant than my past air-mattresses. I love the double-valve system! It enables it to self-inflate incredibly fast. Another great job by the REI developers!!!
So comfortable I had to fight the dogs for it. If it leaks at all, it was minimal after 7 days of use with out any air added. Great value.
I bought this sleeping pad for the World Race. We will be living out of tents and backpacks for a year, and I need something durable and comfortable. When I saw the price, and knowing REIs reputation, I could not pass this up! I haven't used it when camping yet, but I have slept on it on a concrete floor numerous times and slept like a baby! I recommend this to everyone I know who is looking for a sleeping pad!
Just bought this for camping out in the back of the truck. Everything about it is great, just wish in came with a repair kit. I'll have to go to the store and get one in case a thorn punctures it. Rolls up small, inflates easy, very comfortable for these old bones. :-)
I bought the REI 3.5 knowing that I was past ground crawling at night and that its size and weight would not be an issue for truck camping. I am 6ft 1in and 240 lb.s and this pad is actually too padded with air added to its naturally inhaled loft. Perfection is reached by simple letting it inflate and then closing the breathers. Thermarest made a sheet that fit and together they are all I could ask for. If yer a biggun and want an over sized pad, look no further.
I've used this pad for car camping for several years and am very happy with it. Very comfortable, stays inflated, has been durable though I've not put that to the test other than its designed use. Mine has two valves, this picture seems to have one. I have recommended this to friends.
I bought this recently and have only tried it indoors, so I cannot speak to insulation or long-term durability. I bought this pad to replace a bulky/heavy air mattress and rechargeable pump for car camping, and I think it will work well for this use. It's cushy, the top fabric is soft, and it packs easily back into its included compression straps/stuff sack. I have many thinner camping pads, and the extra inch or two really makes a difference in comfort.
