Perfect for everything!
My mom took me yesterday to REI & we bought this for my 21st birthday! I have a small waist so was worried it wouldn't fit but we were able to adjust it and get it perfect! So ladies if you have a small waist don't worry about that! It comes with a rain cover and a whistle! The detachable bag is perfect and fits my 13" Mac. Also, its exactly 22" which means you don't have to count it as a checked bag and can just put it over you on the plane. I bought it for 6 weeks in the Middle East this summer, but plan to use it anytime I have to travel.
Awesome travel backpack.
I bought this pack almost 3 years ago and still love it! It's starting to show a little wear and tear, but after being so many places that is expected. It fits comfortably and can hold about 2-3 weeks worth of clothes/stuff. I stuffed it to the max capacity and it stayed under 50 lbs. I haven't taken it as a plane carry on yet (trying that out next week). It fits in storage lockers in European hostels. I've ran to catch a train and hiked a mountain with this pack. It's even nice to use as a pillow while waiting. The day pack is awesome too! It fits an ipad and DSLR camera with room to spare. I would buy this pack again.
Great travel pack!
My husband and I purchased these travel packs for our 10 day adventure tour of New Zealand in January. The packs worked great! There was an ice storm in Chicago the day we left and it was so nice to be carrying these packs on our backs instead of trying to roll a suitcase through the ice and slush. Additionally, there was plenty of room for everything we needed for our trip. My shoulders got pretty sore carrying the bag around but I'm not sure if that was actually because of the bag, because I packed too much, or because I'm weak. Overall, it's a fantastic bag.
Great for traveling
I took this backpack on a 2 month trip to Southeast Asia. It's amazing. The rain cover came in handy a lot. You can use it while wearing the pack and also if you check it you can tuck all the straps in and cinch it shut. It really helps protect the green color from dirt. The smaller pack was so useful! Perfect for weekend trips and as a carry on. However it got very very dirty. Useful that it can clip onto the front of the large backpack because when filled it cannot fit in the pouch on the back. The front loading is so much better than top loading backpacks. Easier to find your stuff especially when you're constantly moving from place to place. I absolutely love this pack- only downside is the color which gets dirty. Just use the rain cover when transporting it. The little pack has no hope in staying clean though.
Great Pack!
I bought this for a three week trip to Ghana and it is a great pack! This pack is checkable size and will fit in the overhead compartments if you don't stuff it to the gills (specifically the top zipper portion, which makes it too tall, but is a great place to put your 3oz liquids bag for easy access through security). I actually triumphed over a gate attendant who said it wouldn't fit/was too big and made me put it in the measuring box thing - and guess what, it fit beautifully. It just looks bulkier than it is because it is a backpack. I will say, however, that the day pack will not attach to the front if you've put more than a magazine or two inside of it. Which is fine, because then you have the personal item that will fit under the seat. The day pack is a good size with great pockets, will fit a laptop, and the mesh pockets on the sides will fit a regular sized Nalgene bottle. I didn't use the rain cover that comes with it (just left it at home). These were the only bags I brought with me and they were perfect! Well done, REI!
Perfect for My Euro Trip
This bag was perfect for my month in Europe. I packed and unpacked frequently and this bag had kept all my stuff well organized. Also had lots of room for things I bought along the way. Had to carry bag long distances and get on and off trains and buses and the bag was comfortable.
Everything I could have hoped for and more!
This is an incredibly well-designed and well-thought out bag. I'm still finding clever features on it weeks after using it. For example, I just discovered there's a built in whistle on the sternum strap for the daypack! The main bag is about 60 liters and the daypack is about 20 liters, making for a total of 80. Thanks to the full back zip, it's easier to get into the main bag and see all of your contents. Straps in the back of the main compartment help keep things in place. The daypack fits amazingly well in its pouch on the back. There's another similar backpack to this that I've seen on REI where the daypack is only secured with the buckles. I much prefer this one where it fits into its own pocket for both security and also because the pocket is big enough to stuff lots of other things if you're not using the daypack. Two pockets on the hip belt would each fit an iPhone 5 or point and shoot camera. The lid pocket is pretty generous and deep. The adjustment for torso length is easy to do by pulling the back brace away from strong velcro and moving it up or down. The shoulder and hip adjustments are easy to get the perfect fit for your body. There are two cinch straps at the bottom of the pack to hold a bedroll or sleeping bag. The rain/travel cover it comes with is also pretty impressive. It fits the entire bag, cinches down, zips up through the middle, and even lets the shoulder and hip belts through so you could wear it with the rain cover on. The daypack is great on its own! It snugly fits my 13" Macbook Air in the neoprene divide in the main pocket. The front zippered pocket has a deep mesh zippered pocket on outboard side while the backpack side has plenty of pen, card, and larger dividers on the backpack side. Two mesh pockets on the pack sides accommodate a 1 liter Nalgene bottle. The whole pack is very light and feels comfortable to wear. I really have no complaints about this pack at all. I'm not a huge fan of the color (though I really love teal) and it sort of reminds me of toothpaste, however the design and quality of the pack far exceed any snottiness I have about color. I've seen conflicting reports of being able to put this in overhead storage on a plane. I haven't tried it yet but, cinched down with the daypack removed, it's about the same size as other large bags I've been able to fit in the overhead.
This is NOT an 80L pack!
I'm actually puzzled and wondering if I got a defective bag. This bag is disappointingly tiny. I've had an REI evening star (57 liter) for about 18 years and decided I needed something bigger that wasn't starting to show serious wear. This backpack was a huge disappointment. Between the tiny removable day sack and the relatively tiny main sack, it fits less than my 57L bag. And, while I understand what they are trying to do with all the pockets, it actually is too many zippers, making it difficult to remember where everything is buried. Very glad REI has their return policy, because this is going back. Great for those who want to go on a short trip and barely need to pack anything.
Used twice and strap started separating from bag
I know I am writing this on an item that is no longer available however just wanted to vent; my wife and I both purchased the travel pack at the same time. I used mine quite a few times and have never had any problems and love it. My wife loves hers as well however on the second occasion of using it which was well after the warranty the strap on the day pack almost fully separated from the bag itself. Apparently defective stitching. Very disappointed as it was a very expensive purchase and should of been available to use more than one time. I know the warranty was for one year but she didn't even use it at all in that first year.
Ready for Adventure!
I ordered this backpack in anticipation of my move to Europe this autumn, as I plan to do a lot of travel and hiking when I'm there. Although I haven't given it a major test run yet, I love the design. The color is distinctive and fun (though I'm apprehensive about how much dirt it will show), the storage spaces are cleverly designed (the big front zip for the main compartment is the reason I bought it - top-loading packs are so annoying when you have to take things out a lot), the compartments on the hipbelt are a great touch (phone, camera, and money all in easy reach), and I love the detachable daypack; I will be attending graduate school in Europe and it's great that I don't have to buy a separate smaller bag to lug my computer and notebooks to class. I haven't adjusted the back support just yet, but even without the adjustment, the pack was very comfortable. Pros: Comfortable, tons of space, cleverly designed storage compartments, detachable daypack, fun color Cons: Color will likely show dirt easily, sternum strap seems a bit flimsy, daypack is a little smaller and thinner than I anticipated I'm really excited to use this pack on my upcoming adventures!
