Rated 4 out of 5 by from Stylish and functional I bought the Marmot Woman's Preclip rain jacket about a month ago and have been very pleased with the results. As a rain jacket it functions wonderfully keeping my dry and cozy underneath. I enjoy some of the little extras on this jacket like the collar under the hood, that the hood can easily fold into. My two complaints are as follows. 1) like most rain jackets it does not breathe so you can get pretty sweaty underneath and 2) there is only one waist cinc, which does not do a great job at cinching the entire waist and only really tightens one side. Those negatives aside I would still greatly recommend this product and would purchase it again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Snug fit, excellent for Snug fit, excellent for layering. warm and breathable. For me, 6' 200 lbs muscular, the size large is cut very nice, although my intent is to use it as a warm baselayer/very light midlayer. If you want to wear anything in under this it would have to be very low volume. (150g wool is ideal) This piece will be coming with me on every spring climb this year. Marmot makes the best use of this new fabric (polartec power dry high efficiency) that I have seen yet. For anyone unfamiliar with the fabric, imagine a lighter, more breathable, and slightly cooler version of patagonia R1. For an overheater such as myself, it is a prayer answered.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Design flaw... I think this jacket protects from the rain and wind pretty well but it is not completely waterproof and you will get wet after a certain saturation point. It does look good on and fits as expected, however, I have found a serious design flaw. The "sticky" side of the velcro is on the same side as the embroidered Marmot logo so now my logo is all fuzzy because the thread has been pulled by the velcro. I attached a picture - this is even after I've trimmed the fuzzy threads multiple times. I'd think the company would want to preserve the logo as we are all walking advertisements for Marmot after purchasing these products.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from color bleeds! I thought I loved this jacket, but every time I wore it out in the rain (backpacking, out & about, etc), it leaked! And not at the seams - it leaked so that pink dye (color was raspberry) from the material soaked through all over the inside of the jacket. Sometimes little streams of pink water ran off the ends of the sleeves or from the brim of the hood. And pink dye got on the layers I wore under the jacket. Sent it in to Marmot, and of course they were nice enough to give me a credit. But no answer as to why the jacket was such a bust.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it but wish it had a packable pouch I bought this jacket on a whim in Alaska when I'd gotten fed up with my Outdoor Research rain jacket that didn't actually repel water. I usually research reviews prior to purchasing, but this time I took the advice of the REI salesperson who recommended this one. I'm glad I did. This jacket is great. It kept me dry for hours kayaking in the rain. It's comfortable, I can still see when I wear the hood, and the color is great (I have the light blue/turquoise one.) I just wish that it packed into one of its pockets like some other jackets do. It bums me out that I have to just crumple it into a ball and shove it in my bag. If it had this feature I would give it five stars.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Failure in Iceland I bought this jacket several years ago for a trip to Alaska. Fortunately, it did not rain and was thus not tested. I've used it as a wind breaker, but never really needed an actual rain jacket for several hours at a time... until I went backpacking in Iceland last week. It rained every day - some days just a steady drizzle and some days a constant downpour, but this jacket did not perform at all. Even when it started out dry, the water never really beaded up on it. As soon as the jacket got wet, the water was absorbed, leaving me soaked quite quickly. (Fortunately, I always had my REI Joule sleeping bag at night to eventually warm me up!) If you're walking through a parking lot to your car, this will do, but I will definitely be looking for a better rain jacket for future adventures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So LIGHTWEIGHT! I just bought this. 5'8", 145 pounds...usually get a 10 in shells/jackets..ordered the large here. The sleeves were not too long on me...in fact, they could have been just a tad longer but they were fine (outstretched arms they inched up a bit). LOVE THE LENGTH...backside is covered. zip pits are nice and it is so LIGHT!!! i mean you can pack this puppy and it isn't bulky. Now i don't know about winter use..will stick to my heavier stuff there. But it was new out of the box and and survived a deluge/followed by muggy humid misty weather (pit zips to the rescue)..i didn't get wet...now it was a short deluge, 30 mins or so, but nope, not a leak to be found. I am VERY happy with this product...fabric is so light i just hope it holds up.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just about right. I have earlier versions of Marmot jackets and love the way the hood is SECURED into the collar. This Precip jacket is untidy and leaves a lot to be desired with the hood. Please secure it more neatly. The bottom hem is too tight - and I'm not overweight. When I need to layer it is way too tight. Love the pit zips and adjustable cuffs. The sleeve length is a bit long but great when layering. Again, the tight hem seems really weird - is this a defect?

Is the hood adjustable in the back? I'm looking for something that is good in heavy rain and will keep my face dry too. I want to make sure that the hood won't fall off constantly.

Asked by: danacw48
Yes, the Precip has a Velcro tab on the back to adjust the fit. There is also shockcord with two toggles at the bottom of the hood to make adjustments as well.

I bought this jacket 2 years ago and it is no longer waterproof - is there anything I can apply to it to make it waterproof? Thank you!

Asked by: Argyrocket
The Nikwax Hard-shell Outerwear Care Kit will be a great choice for revitalizing your PreCip jacket. The Tech Wash cleans and revitalizes breathability and water repellency on the jacket, while the TX.Direct wash-in waterproofing restores the water-repellent finish. http://www.rei.com/product/783563/nikwax-hard-shell-outerwear-care-kit

I am debating between the rain jacket and the NorthFace Venture. The main difference I am seeing is the hood. Is the Marmot hood more difficult to keep up since i is not attached to the collar?

Asked by: jjturner
This hood will be easy to keep up as there are adjustable loops in the front that help to custom fit to your head.

Does this coat make a lot of crinkling noise when worn?  I'm returning a North Face jacket with HyVent waterproofing I bought because I don't want to be listening to my jacket making noises while I'm hiking.

I'm undecided between 3 rain jackets: Marmot Precip, North Face Venture and Patagonia Torrentshell. Which is the most waterproof? the least? The Marmot seems the lightest- don't know if that matters. (And is it me or is red the hot color this year?)

Asked by: LLJ
All of these jackets are comparable in terms of their waterproof protection since they are all 2.5-layer jackets and around the same price point. The lightest weight jacket is the Patagonia Torrentshell. The major differentiating factors are the color options and the fits of each.

I'm seeing a lot of reviews saying the jacket's waterproofing wears out within a year or two. These reviews are also a year or two old. Has there been any upgrade in this regard? I'd like to spend money on a jacket that will last at least 4-5 years...

Asked by: KDLiz
There has not been any upgrades to the jacket besides new colors within the past year as of May 2017. We recommend to always wash with a Tech Wash to prolong the life of the waterproofness, these detergents can be found by following the link below: https://www.rei.com/c/treatments-and-washes
